We have 10 days to go. If we can hit $6k, Darlene (the creator of the Greyhawk Maps for AD&D and so much more) has agreed to draw the Chromatic Kingdoms Map for Dragonscales.
Special Note about the author: As many of you know James M. Ward created METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA the first science fiction RPG, GAMMA WORLD the first apocalypse RPG, The Lost 77 Worlds RPG, DEITIES & DEMIGODS, GREYHAWK HANDBOUND ADVENTURES and over a hundred articles in STRATIGIC REVIEW, DRAGON MAGAZINE, POLYHEDRON, SCRYE, and CRUSADER JOURNAL. He’s had successes with several game companies: the GREAT SHAKES CHARLIE BROWN game, TAINTED LANDS the horror RPG, OF GODS AND MONSTERS, DARK OUTPOST, DARK VISITOR, DARK COLONY, and now Dragonscales FRPG - The Chromatic Kingdoms.
In the far away astral dimensions there exists a fantasy world filled with many types of dragons and heroes taking advantage of those dragons. Every day wars rage in the sunlight as heroes via for control. Every night dragons take to the skies and hunt for meals and even the boldest of heroes hide from dragon fangs and claws.
Whats in the Book?
The Core book contains six new character types, a new spell system, new spells, Deities of the Chromatic Kingdoms, Magical and Mythical Encounters, Equipment, Powers, and WCS combat system. Everything you need to run a game or a campaign is included in the core book.
Explore the great City of Concord which sits astride a natural bridge which spans the great rift canyon.
The fantasy city is divided in half by a huge canyon miles deep and wide and many miles long extending east and west of the city. There are several very stable stone bridges spanning the canyon. The main bridge is called the Bridge of Gods has several times in the cities history deities have come down to do battle on that bridge with massive creatures coming out of the depths of the canyon. That bridge is three miles wide and 16 miles long. It’s made of solid granite. The brightest and most wealthy people live in high towers on either side of the Bridge of Gods. These towers can be seen from anywhere in the city.
Delve into the dwarven mines in the Rift Canyon, Journey into a Dragons Warren in search of magical scales, or quest across the lands of the Chromatic Kingdoms to explore other cultures and find mythical places of legend.
Beyond the city, the land is filled with abandoned castles, ruins, small villages, mines, dragon warrens, enclaves of dwarf's, a few tribes of elves and scattered small human kingdoms. The dragon wars have brought all to the brink of destruction thus the neutral grounds that are the City of Concord where factions can meet and discuss accords and perhaps peace in a relatively safe place.
Dragonscales uses the Ward card system for the randomness of role-playing. Red cards are positive and black cards cause negative results. Every player and the Game Master have their own deck of cards.
This kickstarter is designed to fund the creation of the core rule book for the Dragonscales game.
If we raise 8k we will create a special Dragonscales Card Deck. All backers will get a deck plus the ASH HOUSE Adventure.
If we raise 12k all loot box backers will be upgraded to the basic boxed set and those with book rewards will have the opportunity to upgrade. The basic boxed set provides a ten card deck of Dragonscale powers for each character of the game. It also provides sets of blank cards for the players to make their own Dragonscale powers to use during a game. During the play of the game, the players have their characters use Dragonscales in the form of cards. When those cards are used they are discarded out of the game until more Dragonscales are taken as treasure. We will also produce a large map of Concord and a map of the Chromatic Kingdoms.
James took his experience creating the Deities and Demigods and other products during his long career and created the Deities of the Chromatic Kingdoms for Dragonscales. This is included in the core book!
As play continues and characters grow more and more powerful they search for stronger and tougher dragons as those scales produce more powerful spells and magical devices. Green dragons are the most plentiful and also the weakest of dragons in the world. Their scales turn into devices and spells that are only used once and are then destroyed. Purple and Black dragons are the rarest of dragons and their scales make massively powerful spells and permanent devices.
The core book details six Character Types you can play:
Fang Warrior make magical weapons from their Dragonscales. They are talented blacksmiths and can make special weapons.
Dragon Eye Mage make spells out of their Dragonscales. They can cast a number of spells and make potions of all sorts.
Forest Caretakers use DragonScales to summon creatures of the forest. They always have a group of tamed wild creatures.
Templar Warriors use DragonScales to make holy weapons and cast holy effects to fight undead and the most evil of dragons.
- Fortune-Hunters have vast skills in opening locked things, in climbing into difficult areas, and in sensing trouble in warrens and caves.
- Speakers of the Air use DragonScales and the gifts of the gods to create special artifacts that are unusually effective in combat.
Each character type has 10 ranks. At each new rank achieved the character gains a new power or ability. Rank is achieved by completing a number of quest for the new rank.
Dragonscales is a fantasy campaign realm filled with the normal wizards, vampires, dark creatures, and deadly encounters. In this realm, dragons rule the night skies and terrify the populace of every land. Only the heroes (player characters) are bold enough to face these dragons; fight them, and tack their magical scales to use in further quests.
Using another blank Dragonscales deck it also allows the players to completely design their own game while playing in the fantasy campaign world. Join other interested players in the turning of a Dragonscale card.
Note: Projected delivery date is November 2018. However, we will deliver early if art, layout, and production run smoothly. Perhaps as early as August.
Dragonscales is a Fantasy Role Playing Game (FRPG) and The Ward Card System (WCS) is copyright and trademarked by FireSideCreations LLC and Stephen A. Lee.
Most of our legends of ruins castle found in the forest, of dragons ravaging the lands, and of ancient treasure discovered emerge by-in-large from the mini-ice age in Europe during the 14th century and the Black Plague in 1397. These events left 70 percent of the population at room temperature. Kingdoms, Castles, Overlords, and entire regions were depopulated, overgrown, and often forgotten. Into this Adventurers, Explorers, and the outcast sought their fate as they explored in unknown lands. This world is sparsely populated and human settlements exist in a few castles and fortified towns here and there. Knights and caravans use companion animals to help protect them from the Terra birds by day and the Dragons by night. Dragons have come to inhabit most deserted castles and those who venture there may find themselves fodder rather than fortunate. So brave the unknown world in search of treasure and fame but beware Zmey Gorynych!
If we raise 15k we will produce a poster map of the Chromatic Kingdoms and include it in the boxed sets.
If we raise 20k we will produce a poster map and booklet for Great City of Concord.
Adventure Rewards and Addon's
We have two adventures written for Dragonscales and one currently being written. Some backer levels offer these as rewards and we will offer an add-on for the adventures you want in backerkit when we fund. Images are placeholders as illustrations and cartography will be commissioned from the funds we raise here.
Blood Red Castle of Doom
Middle Ranked Quest for DragonScale© The Blood Red Castle is a flying castle in the sky. Art for this adventure is being commissioned.
One day the great enchanted city of Concord was enjoying sunny skies and warm temperatures. The next day a flying blood-red castle is floating over the metropolis, the temperature is freezing, and no one yet knows of the undead horrors overhead!
BLOOD RED CASTLE OF DOOM is the first middle-ranked adventure written for the DragonScale fantasy rules system. Troubles start and continue from the first second of game play From the beginning, the player characters have to figure out how to get into a castle, high in the sky. Then the characters must figure out how to get past the obviously enchanted and deadly gates and doors of the castle. If that wasn’t enough, the castle is filled with horrific undead creatures always looking for a new life force meal. Then there is that thousand-year-old dragon skeleton monster that is really irritated you came into its castle. That undead monster of unusual power plans on recruiting the characters, but they aren’t going to like the enrollment procedure.
Beginning ranked player characters wouldn’t stand a chance in this quest. Player characters might consider acquiring buckets full of magic items before they even look to the skies. BLOOD RED CASTLE OF DOOM is the first ever TPDD (Total Party Door Death) adventure.
BLOOD RED CASTLE OF DOOM is a deadly quest for 3 to 10 carefully cautious, middle-ranked player characters.
CRIMSON CLIFFS OF CONCORD
First Ranked Quest for DragonScale© Art is being commissioned the above image is a placeholder.
Concord is an enchanted metropolis filled with dragons, humans, and hundreds of other fantastical races. Everyone in the world tries to visit Concord at least once in their lives. Concord is called the city that is dangerous to get into and twice as dangerous to leave. Just under the cobblestone streets of the city is a vast canyon that divides the city into two huge parts. That canyon has become the problem.
Something is coming up from the canyon walls in the dead of the night and eating the unsuspecting populace. Extra city guards, military troops, and Dragon Eye mages are assigned to guard the city. Those guardians are eaten the first night of their guard duty. Night time is the province of the dragons of the world. Thunderous cries of pain are heard in the night among the avenues of the metropolis and dragon bones are found in the morning on the cobblestone streets of the city.
It’s up to brave heroes to find out what this trouble is and put a stop to it. After all, only 19 different groups have gone down onto the cliffs and not returned. 20 could be your lucky number.
This is a challenging adventure for first ranked player characters. Beginning characters will be created and given special gifts by their gods to start this quest. Heroes will be made or eaten tonight!
A deadly quest for 3 to 10 carefully cautious, first-ranked player characters.
