About this project
The DosaMaker is a simple and easy-to-use countertop appliance that makes fresh, authentic dosas in your home.
Dosas are a healthy crepe originating from South India. They are traditionally made of a rice and lentil batter, but can also be made using other healthy ingredients, such as brown rice, buckwheat, chickpea, and oatmeal. Dosas are a versatile wrap that can be filled with a variety of delicious dishes, or used as a healthy chip to enjoy your favorite chutneys and dips.
Dosa batters are typically vegan and gluten-free.
From breakfast to dessert, dosas are a healthy alternative to traditional wraps and sandwich breads.

Making dosas by hand is tough! First, you must have the skill to spread the batter in a circular motion with the bottom of your ladle. Even if you get this part down, you've only just begun. There are still several things you need to master, such as keeping the pan at the right temperature. If the pan is too hot, the batter will begin to cook as soon as it's poured and will not spread evenly; If it's too cold, you will not get a crispy dosa or that "just right" golden color. Also, if your pan is not seasoned well, the dosa can easily stick to the surface.
Learning the art of making dosas typically takes a lot of patience and time, which in today's busy world most people do not have.
This is why I created the DosaMaker.
The DosaMaker lets anyone make fresh, authentic dosa in just 3 easy steps.
1. Plug in and wait for the red light to turn off and the green light to start flashing (about 5 minutes).
2. Apply a small amount of oil, pour batter, and close the lid.
3. In approximately 2 1/2 minutes, open the lid, remove, and enjoy your dosa!
The DosaMaker works with a variety of batters, including fresh, homemade batter and pre-packaged batter mixes.
The DosaMaker's features include:
Our patented closing mechanism assists you in closing the DosaMaker, so you can consistently create evenly spread dosas. Just pour batter, bring the lid forward into the elevated cooking position, and then gently slide back and lower the lid onto the batter. Making dosas is now that simple.
In the elevated cooking position the top cooking plate does not contact the dosa, so you can cook or warm your favorite fillings. Create an egg dosa by cooking an egg directly on top of your dosa, melt cheese for grilled cheese dosa, or warm-up potato masala for a traditional masala dosa.
Create dosas with an authentic, handmade texture. Our spiral pattern creates the ridges that form when traditionally making a dosa by hand, and our floating hinge design allows the lid and dosa to rise while cooking.
We have partnered with ILAG Swiss high-performance coatings to develop an advanced non-stick cooking surface, so crispy dosas can be made with very little oil. Less oil = healthier dosas.
Our software-based temperature controller uses a proprietary algorithm to automatically manage temperature, while precision sensors monitor the cooking surfaces. Just select the temperature (low, medium, or high) for the batter you are using and let the DosaMaker handle the rest. No more cooling your pan with water between dosas, or burning a dosa because the surface is too hot.

Order fulfillment and shipping is a major part of delivering you a high-quality DosaMaker on-time. It's a complicated process, so we're going to work with Fulfillrite (fulfillrite.com) to make sure it goes smoothly. Fulfillrite has years of experience working with successful Kickstarter projects, and we're excited to partner with them.
After our project campaign ends you will receive a survey to let us know where we can send your DosaMaker (note: All Rewards ship to U.S. addresses only), and if you pledge a Reward level with our T-shirt we'll ask for your size. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions.
The DosaMaker is brought to you by the Soul of India Cooking Co. We are a group of engineers, marketers, designers, manufacturing experts, and above all food-lovers!
Hi, I'm Arvind, creator of the DosaMaker. As a child, I grew up surrounded by homemade dosas made fresh by my mother. My mom is an amazing Indian cook, who used dosas as a healthy crepe to wrap a variety of delicious fillings for our family. While working in India a few years ago, I was enjoying a delicious dosa and realized that everyone I knew back home loved dosas, but most people couldn't make them by hand. So after returning home to Pittsburgh, I decided to create a simple and easy way for anyone to make a perfect dosa.
I started working with my mom to understand the process of making a dosa by hand, to make sure I maintained the authenticity of this ancient food tradition. I built some basic prototypes in my garage to test our ideas, and then teamed up with a great group of engineers to design and build the first proof of concept model (it had wooden housings!). But we soon learned that creating a production-ready design would be an entirely new challenge. So we went to work, and after many prototypes we finally created an easy-to-use model that made great dosas.
We tested DosaMaker prototypes with consumers in the U.S. and India, and received a great response. During these demos, we introduced dosas to many new-comers, educating them on the versatility of these vegan and gluten-free, healthy crepes.
In the past year we traveled to China and partnered with a high-quality appliance manufacturer. We have built factory prototypes, but to finalize tooling and start production, we need to raise funds. After receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from consumers during demos, we decided that crowdfunding would be a great way to ask dosa-lovers and people who are looking for a fun and easy way to make healthy meals at home for their support.
We sincerely appreciate all of the amazing feedback we're receiving and can't wait for you to easily make dosas in your home using the DosaMaker. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
As with any project, there is a possibility of unknown challenges that can cause production and delivery delays. Our next steps include finalizing tooling, ordering components from third-party suppliers, passing final safety/regulatory testing, mass production, quality control, and shipping. Vendors may be late in supplying components, and there may be issues that come up during testing, mass production, and shipping that can cause delays.
We've done a significant amount of work upfront to reduce these risks. Our team includes members who have 15+ years of experience manufacturing products in China, and our manufacturing partner works with a number of large US and European brand name clients. We have already produced factory prototypes from tooling to confirm that our design is ready for mass production. These prototypes have gone through extensive consumer testing. We've also submitted the DosaMaker for preliminary safety & regulatory testing, and passed this preliminary evaluation.
As we begin production we will keep you updated regularly, and will do our very best to deliver a high-quality DosaMaker on-time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
