About this project
Power Pillow gives batteries a place in our living rooms that is within reach, but neatly out of sight. The pillow resides on your sofa or bed. It houses a 12000mAh lithium-polymer battery pack, with two USB ports to charge your phones, tablets or any USB device.
When one battery gets low, simply swap it out for your other fully-charged battery.
Enhance your life. Experience the freedom of never running out of power again when you need it most. It's finally possible to recharge your body, mind, phone and tablet all at the same time.
Passionate about making designs that work for people; it occurred to us that charging often means abandoning your device at a wall socket when you would rather be using it. We set about designing a method of charging that was pleasant and comforting, so our phones can always be above 80%.
If you don't have outlets within reach, Power Pillow is your solution. Once you've tried it, you won't know how you lived without it.
We are offering Power Pillow with an unprecedented two–12000mAh slim form batteries, which measure a mere .57 inches thin, and 9.8oz light. The Power Pillow charging system has two batteries, so one is always fully charged. The sleek batteries are removable and easily pocketable if you need to take them on the go.
The patent-pending Power Pillow soft battery-housing is roomy enough to comfortably store most popular Kickstarter batteries up to 18000mAh in it's accessory compartment. Large or small, the Power Pillow keeps them handy.
The battery and accessory pockets are constructed of EX-Static™ conductive fabric – woven with BASF® Resistat™ (carbon nanotube) thread – which provides EMF shielding and static dissipation.
Please note: We are also offering the Power Pillow soft battery-housing alone (without batteries) as a reward for those of you who want a second matching pillow.
Initially, Power Pillow will be available in seven designs as well as the Power Pillow Elite custom option. The seven designs feature distinctive piping and colorful cable-safe plastic zippers on the compartments.
The Power Pillow's fabric, stitching and stuffing is backed by a 90-day warranty against manufacturing defects.
We welcome your feedback on our products and designs, and we can't wait for you to experience that "Awww yeah" Power Pillow feeling.

Lisa Sutt – Creative Director. In charge of design, marketing, web and print. Lisa has over 9 years experience developing retail promotions, packaging, new products both domestically and overseas, and has an excellent understanding of workback schedules. She is an award winning designer/art director and a self-disciplined problem solver. She is also a great lover of pillows and gadgets. Her understanding of user experience is beyond compare. Lisa is the founder and President of All Possibilities Incorporated which is executing this project.
Geoff Martin – COO. In charge of strategy, logistics, project management, procurement. Geoff has developed projects and run businesses great and small over the past 19 years. He is a retired military logistics officer. Ingenious and dogged about the details, he has what it takes to get it done.
Lisa and Geoff are an awesome team.
In early October 2013, Geoff got a call from his brother, who wanted to discuss an idea for a dishwasher. Never one to shoot down inventive thinking off hand, Geoff listened. During the conversation, Geoff's competitiveness kicked in, and his mind turned to inventing itself. In a flash, Geoff thought of the idea of having a pillow with a power-source that you could plug your phone into.
Lisa and Geoff looked at each other and said "holy *bleep*. That is a good idea!". And moments later Geoff came up with the name, Power Pillow.
Lisa, always one to spot a good idea and run with it, exclaimed, "Let's do it. It can be done. I'm sure of it."
Lisa and Geoff immediately started making prototypes. We looked at putting a solar panel on a pillow, for which we submitted a provisional patent, but realized the power and reliability as a system just isn't there for solar yet.
Geoff, full-steam-ahead, applied for the provisional patent and trademark protection.
Early on, we literally cut open a throw pillow and jammed a battery pack inside to see if we could feel it inside the pillow. We were delighted. The pillow was still comfy, but we needed to find a way to keep the battery in place, close to the edge, not lost inside the pillow.
We considered the benefits of both a hard battery compartment and a soft battery compartment. After consulting plastics specialists and battery manufacturers, we concluded that a soft battery compartment with a rigid battery was optimal for durability, comfort and ease of use.
Geoff also expressed a demand early on that the pillow come with two batteries that could be swapped out, to make the system very easy and reliable. Originally, Lisa loved the idea, but scoffed at the possibility, due to the cost of grade A batteries. After much research, quoting and discussion with manufacturers, as well as determining a final price, we are pleased to introduce a high-powered two battery system. *note: a single battery model, the 'Power Pillow Basic Charging System' is available for $79.00 CAD; see rewards.
Lisa devised the simplest and most durable method for making the internal pockets stable inside the pillow. It involves using two pillow forms, one on either side of the pockets and having the pocket material span the height of the pillow. The first seamstress sewn prototype was called "Dottie". The surface design was inspired by Lisa's love of sailing and all things nautical.
Seven prototypes have been made, each progressive one more refined, but all maintain the basic pocket construction. This construction is easiest for manufacturing and most durable. The seamstress sewing our prototypes has been sewing for 40 years and will be in charge of Canadian production. Lisa has worked with her for two years on various projects.
It was apparent that we would have to provide many surface designs as we launched this product. Design considerations had to include a wide demographic, because we feel everyone with a device can benefit from having a Power Pillow. Lisa had already selected 4 surface designs for prototyping and selected an additional three for the Kickstarter launch.
Lisa selected the seven fabrics based on 100% cotton content for durability and environmental friendliness. The Maxim design is covered in 100% organic cotton sourced from Canada.
Our exploration and research of the most desirable fabric to use for the battery compartment was exhaustive. Our prototypes to date have used polyester ultra-suede for their softness. But ultimately, what we wanted was a fabric that had features; would be soft, durable, heat resistant, dissipate warmth, dissipate static and could shield EMF. Woven from polyester and BASF® carbon nanotube threads... EX-Static™ is that fabric. While EMF emissions from batteries are not dramatic, we believe EMF shielded compartments are an excellent bonus feature for a cellphone and tablet targeted product.
We've done our homework. There are tonnes of batteries on the market and tonnes of manufacturers. Unfortunately, the vast majority of batteries are not up to our high standards. Our number one priority is to provide a flawless user experience for you, only the best will do.
In our battery research, we sought advice from several industry specialists; both in science and in business. If making excellent quality batteries was easy, everyone would be doing it. We tested over a dozen different batteries and weighed the many considerations: form factors, lithium-ion prismatic versus lithium-polymer, case materials, circuit board designs, and additional features such as card readers or LED mini-flashlights. We did an extensive survey of existing designs and battery products. We tested tirelessly.
We chose lithium-polymer for it's slim form factor, safety record, ability to hold it's charge over long periods of time, high number of charge cycles (over 500) and it's ability to deliver a high percentage of it's stored energy before needing to be recharged.
Our two-12000mAh batteries are tested and conditioned for three full cycles and come with a one-year warranty.

Risks and challenges
We have planned for all campaign scenarios. We have built relationships with our partners and suppliers and have complete faith in their ability to deliver on our quality promise on-time.
One of the challenges we may face if Power Pillow is a runaway hit, is procuring enough of all of the specific fabrics we have chosen. To combat this, we have selected fabrics that are available from multiple suppliers.
Every step of the way, from design to choice and location of suppliers, we have made an effort to avoid complications and provide the most satisfactory customer experience possible. Of course, customs, logistical delays and "Acts of God" may interfere with our best laid plans. We will communicate any delays in delivery as soon possible, in the unlikely event that they occur. Your satisfaction is paramount to us.
