Hi, I'm Randy Hulshizer, publisher and editor in chief at Empyreome (pronounced Em-peer-ee-ohm), a quarterly online magazine dedicated to publishing high quality science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative fiction. We're just getting started here, but we're excited that you're thinking of coming along with us on this journey!
Empyreome is derived from the Greek word empyrean (of or relating to the heavens) and the suffix -ome (denoting parts having a specified nature, as in 'genome'), suggesting that the stories we hope to publish are out of this world! We also hope that these stories will encourage, enlighten, and inspire those who take the time to read them.
We plan to publish four issues each year, beginning in January 2017, which will be made available free on our website in HTML format, and available for purchase at nominal cost in a variety of eBook formats, including PDF, EPUB, and MOBI. Each issue will contain a collection of 5 to 8 short stories with up to 10,000 words each. From each issue, we will select several stories to feature on our website.
In addition to the magazine, also beginning in January 2017, we plan to publish one flash story (1,000 words or shorter) each week in our online Weekly Flash series. And at the end of the year, we will publish an eBook anthology contained all twelve flash stories and a selection of short stories.
As you can tell, there are a lot of moving parts. We're trying to keep costs down by doing everything we can by ourselves (website design, programming, etc.) and by volunteering our time and energy to this exciting project. However, there are still many expenses that we cannot avoid.
The most important expense is paying our authors!
As it stands, we are currently only able to offer authors a small token payment for their work. We'd really like to be able to pay them more, and one day (hopefully soon), a professional rate.
This is where you come in! Would you consider helping us out? Your support would mean so much to us and also to our authors. Plus, you'll get some nifty rewards as a token of our appreciation. Check out the reward levels on this page.
Thank you in advance for your support!
Risks and challenges
Randy here again. As the publisher of this magazine, I'm prepared to self-fund the entire operation for the first year. However, without an additional revenue source, I'm severely limited in how much I can pay the authors whose work I publish. Donations from people like you will enable me to pay the authors a more reasonable rate for their work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
