About this project

Project: Lehigh and New England #10256 is one of many projects we as a group hope to take on in the future in our mission to bring history back to life. This Kick-starter project is the first part of 10256's journey, the movement of the gondola from Kempton, PA to the restoration shop at Topton, PA.

Movement of railroad based equipment is not as simple as rolling your car onto a rollback, we wish it was. It is much more expensive and a tad bit more complicated as the gondola is quite heavy and is around 41 feet and 9 inches long and about 10 feet wide, requiring permits and a specialized trucking company to do it.

We have found a trucking company to do it, we've worked with them in the past to move such equipment before, their quote has been worked into the funding goal so hopefully there shouldn't be any issues.

A bit of history and knowledge:

L&NE 10256, currently a fairly time torn #730, was built for the Lehigh & New England railroad in the 1920's to haul commodities that weren't practical to haul in a normal hopper car. Shown below is one of the restored cars at the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern which has been adapted as an "Open Air" car for tourist operations.

This car below, #730 originally 10256, is our car.

The gondola looks battered and beaten but truly, its nothing more then restoring an oversized antique automobile. Some body and frame work, all new wood sides, a good loving coat of paint and she'll look as good as new. But we'll cover the restoration in the next project.

As you can see, it is a tad larger then your normal tractor-trailer load, it may not be 53 feet long, but it sure weighs the part. And at this stage in its life, even if we could move it by rail to its new home, which there is no other railroad connecting to Kempton, it is too old to move off its home railroad by rail unless loaded onto another car of much newer age. Once we restore it, we can use it all we want, its just the way the rules are written. We need your support to help us move the car so that we may begin restoring it to operational condition and many generations to come may see just exactly what the past looked like, and hopefully, we'll be able to show how it operated. A living history, something a photograph can never show you.

Risks and challenges

Permits won't be a problem, one delay or mishap we may encounter however would be if the truck could not get into the Topton shop complex due to the way the railroad crossing is raised there. If this is indeed the case, it will have to be unloaded at Kutztown where an active connecting shortline would have to ferry the car from Kutztown to the Topton shops, a distance of about 4 miles. This can be done and will not be too much of a hassle.

For the movement of the car, that is the only real obstacle we face at this current time. We are currently laying NEW track into the shop facility for the gondola and other equipment that will be joining it from other groups there for restoration. We are quite confident that we can accomplish this movement without too much hassle and will have it on its way to restoration hopefully by June.
