" Australi is a celebration of the truly beautiful and naturally mysterious Australian landscape & fauna - captured in a fantasy world."
We follow the story of Maloo, a young Aboriginal boy searching for his people and a place to call home.
Set twenty years after the European, Chinese and Middle Eastern empires first set foot on Australi's shores, Maloo must navigate a new world, full of unique and dangerous trials.
Maloo unwillingly becomes the hope of his people when an old prophecy is handed down. Now with not only the British empire after him, but also pirates, poachers and mercenaries, Maloo must find his inner spirit to fulfil the heavy burden placed upon him.
As the land becomes scarred by foreign war machines and the great animal spirits are captured as poachers prizes, Australi grows sick and its magical beauty fades. Ancient magic brews on all sides of the battle, with one boy and his odd band of destined heroes all that's left to save it.
Australi's first BIG issue will be 45 full colour pages of the first chapter. It introduces our main characters, including Maloo, the Prince and the mysterious Guardians.
The second half of the first book (30 pages) will include our art and process book.
It includes a comprehensive guide on how to create real characters, interesting worlds and perilous stakes.
We talk about exposition vs. action, a break down on how to avoid clichés and create worlds that tell stories on their own.
It also includes breakdowns of Pius' art and the thought processes behind the design. It may also hint to future chapters *wink wink*.
We will talk shots and angles, story and design choices. If you guys love it we will keep making them to make sure you feel invited into our creative world.
Hi :) Timothy Wood, the writer here.
Welcome to our Kickstarter and passion, Australi.
Tomas and I are passionate storytellers and have been creating film and screenplays together for quite some time. As much as we love the big silver screen we have one goal when it comes to our stories... YOU guys. We want to share our stories as far and wide as we can.
After the success of our last short film The Boy Who Stole the Bell Tower, we had a hard look at how we could get our stories out there in a bigger more meaningful way. We talked a lot about our passions and found that we both admired the works of comic book creators, both from a fandom and business perspective.
Australi is a project that we wanted to create on film but quickly realised the mammoth task that it would be in terms of time, resources and money. We decided, rather than letting it go, we would create a graphic novel to build a community of people as impassioned as us about fantasy and Australia.
Why Australi? We were both inspired by the films Ferngully & The Never Ending Story. Despite Ferngully not having a huge critical success, it's a film in Australia that everyone has seen and loves on a deep nostalgic level. Since Ferngully not many people have attempted true high concept, Australian fantasy. We are recreating that nostalgic Australian fantasy feeling in a new, exciting format.
Story telling aside we have teamed up with the incredible Pius Bak to create a unique vision. So far we have created concepts of the world, written the story and researched, researched, researched. We need your help to finish the first BIG issue and our art & process book.
Risks and challenges
Being film makers of large productions we understand how to overcome problems efficiently. However, all large projects such as Australi come with unique challenges.
Printing and shipping is not something we have had a lot of experience with. That said, our reputation is everything to us, and to let you down would be a massive blow. We are confident that we will not fail to deliver what we promise.
If we reach our goal we know that we won't have any problems with delivering the scale of the story we have promised.
Unforeseeable problems are bound to arise with any project, but we are confident in our ability to manage and solve them without inconveniencing our backers.
Any problems we may have will be communicated with our backers and Australi community. We know that the Kickstarter community is understanding if the creators are honest and forthcoming and we will use that as our motto.
Thanks for reading our Kickstarter and we hope that you enjoy our tale :)
