My name is Irene Mudd, and I'm an artist and illustrator from Louisville, Kentucky, and the creator of the Guided Hand Tarot! My artistic background is in painting and fiber art, which both appear in the deck, but collage has recently become an obsession of mine due to its tendencies towards the surreal and the sensual. This is my first Kickstarter, and I am super excited to share this deck with the world!
About the Deck: The Guided Hand Tarot was created in a flourish of intense creative activity in 3 humid summer months in 2017. Each card was hand-collaged and embellished with gouache, gold marker, and embroidery. My love of color, pattern and texture flow throughout this deck, and so its uniqueness lies in its tactile, layered quality achieved from analog collage. I wanted this deck to maintain the symbolism of traditional tarot decks, such as the Rider Waite, so the art was carefully and intuitively designed to communicate the themes of each card, without the symbolism getting lost in the design.
The Guided Hand Tarot approaches the ancient symbolism of the Tarot from a queer, feminist perspective. I chose to blur the rigid gender binaries present in traditional tarot decks by representing queer and sometimes androgynous figures in place of many "male" or "female" archetypes.
About the Artist: I have been a tarot practitioner for 8 years, and an artist all my life. The rich symbolism in the art of the tarot has always captured me, and creating a deck of my own has always been a dream of mine. All my life I've been drawn to magic and ritual, and art making has always been an important part of my spiritual practice, so the marriage of these two loves seemed like an obvious choice. My hope is that this deck will reach as many people as possible, and that it resonates with each user, serving as a trusted guide.
Art of the Guided Hand Tarot: The aesthetic of this deck is deeply influenced by abstract painter Hilma af Klint, who makes a cameo as my High Priestess! She believed unseen mystic forces guided her hand to create her stunning geometric paintings, which is how my deck got its name. The geometric compositions and triadic color schemes in the deck pay homage to her mystical art. There is also a repeated use of triangles in the deck, which represent the alchemical symbols of earth, fire, air and water-- an integral facet of the tarot.
How you can help: Any amount of money contributed to this project will push it one step further to being a reality. Sharing this deck with the world requires having the funds to print and distribute it, so donate what you can and share the link to this campaign! Use the hashtag #GuidedHandTarot to spread the word on social media. The more people who see it, the better!
Basic Info: The Guided Hand Tarot deck is a 78 card deck, complete with 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana are made up of four suits: Pentacles, Wands, Cups and Swords. The cards measure 4.75" in length, and 2.75" width. The Basic deck comes shrink wrapped, with an altar cloth, and includes a bifold guide booklet. The Premium deck has silver gilded edges, a rigid 2 part box, and includes a handmade zine written by Irene Mudd which has a guide on how to read tarot, interpretations of each card, and insight into the deck's creation.

Huge shout out to my incredibly talented and generous friends who I could not have done this project without-- ATOMO (atomo-cares.com) for his remix of his track "When I Met Her Dog", Maddie Weiner (@themaddieweiner) for my video, and Christian Brawner for helping make this project a reality!
Risks and challenges
At this point, all the art for this project (meaning the card and package design, altar-cloth and patch designs) is completed, and I have a proof copy of the deck, assuring me of the excellent print quality. The limited edition guidebook is a work in progress but will be finished well before the decks are ready to be printed. What is needed now is funding to proceed with the printing of the decks, as well as materials and shipping costs for the other incentive items.
Should any delays in production or changes in schedule occur, I will be completely transparent and communicative on my page, and answer questions as best and as quickly as I can. Regardless of any delays, I intend to provide updates on production and shipping as frequently as possible.
