The Skinny: What’s Left of Leatherdale is a photo-memoir featuring hundreds of never-before revealed stories and images captured from 1978-2005 — creating an irreplaceable, one-man NYC time capsule — a New York that is no more.
The story begins, San Francisco, 1978: model, filmmaker and popular sex icon Peter Berlin invited a young photography student named Marcus Leatherdale, already intrigued by the iconic image for Patti Smith’s album cover ‘Horses,’ to an exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe’s work. Consequently, the two quickly met, and Leatherdale was offered a NYC crash pad while after he toured Arizona with his new Polaroid SX70.
New York City, 1979: within a mileu of comrades-in-darkrooms — Marsha Resnick of Hurrah! club & Soho Weekly News; Larissa, the ‘Coco Chanel of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ — Marcus Leatherdale was swept into the middle of the NYC scene.
From Andy Warhol’s Factory and the Mudd Club to his Dada night at Underground, Union Square, ‘Hidden Identities’ series for Details Magazine at the vanguard new wave club Danceteria — stage of Madonna’s debut and where Sade began as a bartender — Leatherdale now presents his unwittingly created historical archive of Gotham.

The interviews between Martin and Marcus Leatherdale reveal the stories behind the images —1978-2005. It started with a coffee in Portugal, which sprang the idea for this book, and evolved into this comprehensive project.

The text is being produced from a long series of conversations that began 10 years ago between Martin & Marcus. It follows the Paris Review style — easy to read, straightforward, provocative as well as entertaining.
The images are all supplied by Marcus and his friends, and are being scanned and formatted to the highest standard possible, to create a valuable archive. A selection will be featured in a glossy, full colour section.
The manuscript will be edited by NYC veteran Mary Folliet, who has worked with Bruce Springsteen and the E STreet band guitarist Elliott Murphy, and 1950s Village Jazz singer/opening act for Bob Dylan Varda Ducovny.
It will be designed & typeset in the UK, and printed in Berwick-Upon-Tweed by a 100+ year old family run craftsman press. All materials used are environmentally friendly, Forestry Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified, with a registered/audited 98% of all waste recycled.

Risks and challenges
Barring limitations imposed by Brexit or Acts of God, the challenges to this project are minimal, and lie in the ability to gather, process, format and create the material in a timely manner. Polwarth has been actively & successfully producing specialty projects such as this for over five years — the most recent featured at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
Sometimes, especially with small, custom-created projects, things take longer than usual. However, the interviews for the text are well underway, the images are all scanned, retouched where needed & ready, and the printer ready to go. Any necessary credit arrangements, supplies, incorporations, distance sales requirements, Data Protection registrations, etc. are in place.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
