Universe Revolves Around YOU is a new work by sculptor Zachary Coffin - a 30' merry go round made of granite and steel, slated to be built for Burning Man 2012.
Universe is a work about inertia. The idea is to create a plaything, an object that allows YOU to interact with rolling mass equivalent to a loaded railroad freight car. In this case, the load is big slabs of stone, spinning boulders and a lot of humans.
This human-powered merry go round will have a moving weight of about 80,000lbs, plus people. The ring will be surfaced with thick slabs of granite and two kinetic elements will add or subtract energy from the spinning ring. All mass in motion.
The total cost of building this piece is estimated at about $94,000. We've raised nearly $60,000, which leaves us with a total of $34,000 to raise. We are hoping to raise $17,000 through Kickstarter, and will gladly accept more. Thank you for checking out our project! Please share with your friends!
We are in full production right now and have most of the steel in hand, the rocks in hand or in production. Now the big bills are coming due, hardware, precision steel plate, and most of all trucking. This is at least three semi-truck loads.
Simply put, to give a new experience. This will allow an experience similar to hopping a moving train, without the risk of losing a leg to the wheels. There is a magic to a mass this large in low friction motion, and to think the people are what is powering it will be a unique feeling.
Well, we don't. But it is very simple, if very heavy. There are engineers working on getting the rolling friction down to the absolute minimum. Though it will probably take more than one person to get it started, we are confident that 10 -12 people will have no problem and 8 will be able to keep it in motion without much difficulty. We have designed good handholds for up to 8 people to pull it while running at full speed. Should be a lot of fun.
