About

Hung in the Middle: A Journey of Gender Discovery is a memoir written by Kentucky born Alana Nicole Sholar. The picture on the book’s cover was taken in 1969 when Alana was only 8 years old. It was at that time she realized she was ‘different’ and immediately went into hiding – even hiding from herself. After decades of gender confusion, she finally became ‘Alana’ with a legal name change in 2005.

“Hung in the Middle” was released in May 2012 and has received wonderful reviews -- as well as support from Buck Angel.  Both Alana and I have participated in previous events and been invited to upcoming events which requires us to supply a certain number of books for each event.  With so much attention, our demand is quickly becoming much greater than our ability to supply books.

The purpose of this project is to give YOU, as our backer, the opportunity to take part in getting Alana’s story out to others who are on their own path of self-discovery. Although each person’s path is different, we ALL seek to discover ‘self.’

Risks and challenges

As expressed by the title of Alana’s book, we often find ourselves ‘hung in the middle’ when it comes to making the right decision as to where to put our focus, and our limited funds. The factory where Alana worked closed its doors in January 2009, so our household income is my retirement from KY State Government, which is why I say ‘limited funds.’ I’m grateful our income covers our house payment and living expenses, but there’s not much left after those are taken care of. BTW – it was unemployment that allowed Alana to turn her focus toward writing her story.

Our ‘challenge’ is similar to the ‘which comes first, the chicken or the egg’ question – only the pecking order of our decision was, ‘which comes first, the marketing or the printing’ – and each is quite costly, so we couldn't do both. We decided to begin with marketing – we figured it wouldn’t do much good to have a huge supply of books if no one knew it existed.

Our marketing efforts – which have been few – have had tremendous results. We’re getting invitations to participate in and present at various events – however, being able to accept these invitations means we need to have a supply of books for each event.

Because of our limited income, it can take me several months of setting aside what little bit I can to save up enough money to order only 100 books -- the printer, the publisher, and shipping costs must be paid before we can receive the first book.

This month alone, our demand is so much greater than our ability to provide a supply. Just one event this month, the Kentucky Book Fair, is expected to have approximately 4,000 attendees -- and we have only 65 books available for the event.

The risk we take is in accepting an invitation to participate in an event – trying to save the money in time to have books printed for the event -- not being able to provide the needed books – thereby not being able to attend the event or get this life changing message into the hands of the right person.
