A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE DOCUMENTARY:
An Article of Hope is a powerful story of a journey of the human spirit. It is a story that reaches across generations, and needs to be told. Three men, born at a different time in history, whose lives are woven together by a twist of fate. Now, there is a once in a lifetime opportunity to bring this documentary to millions through a national TV audience on PBS. With your help, we can raise funds to help underwrite the documentary.
Dawn is breaking on the morning of February 1, 2003 above West Texas. Suddenly the peace of the early morning is shattered by two loud bangs. The Space Shuttle Columbia is announcing its return home, causing sonic booms as it streaks across the sky faster than the speed of sound. The shuttle is speeding toward a Florida homecoming. But in an instant, onlookers below and controllers in Houston are stunned at what they see. Something has gone horribly wrong. The shuttle has broken up, vanished! Gone is its precious cargo of seven astronauts from around the world. Among them, Col. Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first Astronaut.
Also gone, an artifact that embodied the glory of the Shuttle’s mission and the despair of its demise: a tiny Torah scroll – smuggled into a Nazi concentration camp during the Holocaust; safeguarded by Joachim Joseph, a Holocaust survivor; and carried into space by Col. Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut.
It is a unique story that interweaves the heights of scientific achievement, the depths of a nation’s cruelty, the private grief of a boy who came of age during the Holocaust, and the public mourning of many nations in the aftermath of the Columbia Shuttle disaster.
To fulfill the promise that a boy in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp made during the Holocaust – to use the Torah scroll to tell the world what happened in the camp – comes An Article of Hope, a documentary film exploring the journey of the scroll from pre-World War II Europe, to Israel, to the United States, and to space.
The film contrasts the Holocaust and the rich diversity of the Columbia crew. It takes you behind the scenes as this wonderful group of people train for their mission, and learn about each other. In the process, they gain respect for their diversity and cultural backgrounds. By the time they reach the launch pad, they are bound together as family, showing what can be achieved when people work together for the greater good. The film reaches across faiths and nationalities to tell a truly human story, a journey of the human spirit.
In a world full of tension and discourse, the story of An Article of Hope must be told.
THE FUNDING GOAL:
We want to be successful in raising the funding we need, to Kickstart us down the road, so we set our goal low - $50,000.00 in hopes we reach that amount and maybe more! That’s serious money we need to work with PBS to get the documentary on television, and then develop a strategy for distribution to schools around the world.
If the documentary is finished, why do you need more money?
It took 7-years to make the documentary. We did it by raising a little money here, borrowing a little more money there, and a lot of love and un-reimbursed time from the director. Now the final challenge is to get it on television before millions. PBS is a non-profit network, which means we must bring underwriting to the agreement. With your help, the funds we raise here go toward final editing to conform the documentary to PBS technical requirements, broadcast rights and fees, promotion, web site, all of the things that would normally come from a traditional agreement, we must fund it all.
Has the film been released?
We are proud that An Article of Hope has been shown at film festivals and received a great reaction. It has won “Best Film” honors three times in festivals in the U.S. and overseas. It was shown on Israel’s public television to great reviews. Critics are quick to zero in on the documentary’s powerful message of a journey of the human spirit. Now it’s time for the documentary to be seen in America! And on PBS – a wonderful home for An Article of Hope.
How can I get a copy?
The best way to get your own copy of the documentary is to make a pledge in a qualifying category. Otherwise, you have to wait. First we must get the doc on PBS so everyone in America can see this powerful story. After it goes on TV then copies will be available on DVD and streaming.
Do you have any other plans for distribution?
Yes! We hope to place An Article of Hope in schools around the world. This remarkable story is not only a lesson about the Holocaust, but also a lesson about humanity. We have even developed a lesson plan to accompany the education version of the film. But none of this can happen until we achieve the PBS goal.
What’s your next film?
Hold on, one film at a time. This one begs to be on TV, and shown in schools, then think about the next one.
With your help, and your friend’s help, we can make this happen!
