NOTE: This is a RE-LAUNCH of our previous Kickstarter for Next Wave TOI and Stalingrad. We incorporated much of the feedback and suggestions from our fans. Check it out!
This Kickstarter enables supporters to pick and choose the types of rewards they want! Any reward can be attached to any pledge level as ADD-ONS – just choose a pledge level and include the appropriate amount of money for that reward. For example: If you want the Next Wave Tide of Iron core set and the four laser-cut, color-stained wooden Initiative cards you would choose the REGIMENT level ($70) and add $18 for a USA address or $22 for a foreign address. (See ADD ONS section below for a complete list and prices.)
Why Tide of Iron Needs Your Support
Tide of Iron is at a crossroads. After two years of limited support for the system, TOI fans are finally getting the love they deserve. The new Stalingrad campaign expansion has finally arrived and is shipping to distributors and retailers across the country as well as overseas. We're working on new web content such as bonus scenarios. We're doing research and making initial plans for future expansions. However, we also face some major challenges.
The big box core set of Tide of Iron is completely out of print. As a result, we have to reprint the core set before releasing any more expansions. Since there were some things that could be improved in the old core set, such as scenario balance and new player accessibility, we decided to update it as the Next Wave Core Set, and lower the price point for new players in the process. Thus, it will contain a reorganized rules presentation, quick start rules, and still contain all the components you need to play the existing TOI published scenarios. All this in a smaller box that is easier to store and ship.
Here is the problem: To maintain the quality of the components that you've come to expect from Tide of Iron, the Next Wave Core Set is going to be fairly expensive to produce. 1A Games is a new company, and doesn't have very deep pockets. For instance, despite my title of Chief Game Designer, I'm only working part-time for 1A Games. During the day, I'm a substitute teacher. We need your help to meet those production costs.
You might think that since you already own your copy of the old core set, that all this won't affect you and you can just buy the expansions. The problem is that most retailers and distributors won't carry expansions for a core game that is out of print. If no one will carry the expansions, we can't afford to make them. That means that if Next Wave Core Set Kickstarter doesn't fund its base goal, we won't be able to produce any of the following expansions:
1. The Pacific: We desperately want to bring the Japanese and the USMC to Tide of Iron. It is long overdue, and is a high priority for us.
2. North Africa: The Days of the Fox expansion is also out of print, along with the British in Tide of Iron. Bill Jaffe and I are agreed that we want to do more than just a reprint. We want to completely revisit North Africa with two expansions, one covering the Americans in Tunisia, as well as one that just focuses on the British in Libya and Egypt.
3. The Early War: Except for the Eastern Front, TOI (in print) pretty much begins in 1944. We plan to change that. In addition to the North Africa expansions, we want to release expansions covering Poland, France, and Finland.
Please don't think of this as an ultimatum. We just want you to know what's at stake for the future of Tide of Iron. With the Next Wave Core Set in print, we will be able to draw new players into the game, create an organized play program, and keep creating TOI expansions that will eventually cover the entirety of World War II.
We know that the holidays are fast approaching, and that you all have other claims on your time and money. Even if you can't afford to pledge much yourself right now, please help us by spreading the word to your friends and fellow gamers. Please post about it on forums, discuss the project at your local game store, and add it to your Facebook page and Twitter feed. With your help, we can keep Tide of Iron in print and expanding for years to come.
- Craig Robertson, Chief Game Designer, 1A Games
Still the same great game
1A's "Next Wave" version of Tide of Iron (TOI) does not change the original game system created by Fantasy Flight Games in 2006, but adds to it. The original FFG big box TOI core set is now out of print. We are asking your support to help us produce a medium size box version of TOI that still has all of the map boards, cards, plastic pieces, etc., needed to play all four TOI expansions – including 1A’s new Stalingrad.
1A’s Next Wave TOI will introduce new quick-start scenarios and use the same original core rules, but presented in a way that is designed to get you playing the game faster. The original FFG TOI and "Next Wave" 1A Games versions will be totally compatible.
If you already own the original Tide of Iron, the rules and components for the Stalingrad expansion were designed to work with the existing game system.
You can get just the new Next Wave TOI core rulebook and quick-start scenarios as rewards at the Intelligence Officer ($10) pledge level, or as an add-on to any pledge level (see ADD ONS section below).
Although 1A’s TOI Stalingrad expansion is on its way to stores now, we are offering some extra special items for Stalingrad as part of this Kickstarter. You can get these extras along with a copy of Stalingrad, or obtain them as separate reward items or add-ons. (If you already pre-ordered Stalingrad, you can buy just these add-ons separately. See the ADD ONS section below.)
What's inside the "Next Wave" Tide of Iron core set
The new Next Wave TOI core set reprints the same tokens, same reference charts, etc., published originally by Fantasy Flight Games. It includes double-sided geomorphic map boards depicting French countryside, the same plastic pieces representing American and German infantry, and same German and U.S. tanks and armored half-tracks. Everything you need to fight World War Two tactical battles on a tabletop.
And 1A's Next Wave TOI core set is totally compatible with the three existing FFG TOI expansions Days of the Fox, Normandy, and Fury of the Bear, as well as 1A's new Stalingrad expansion.
We're also taking heed to what our long time fans had to say and have gone back and taken a hard look at some of the scenarios which came in the original boxed set. Some of them were, to say the least, a tad unbalanced; while that may be more historically accurate, it's not always very much fun. So, we've rebalanced the older unbalanced scenarios to be more equitably playable for both sides. Here's a sample scenario for you to check out for yourself:
What's inside the Stalingrad expansion box
"I told our men we could not retreat beyond the Volga... I believe that nowhere else in this war was there such bloody hand-to-hand combat. Nowhere else were bayonets and hand grenades used so widely as in Stalingrad... Our soldiers had only one idea. Stalin had ordered us not to retreat."
– Vasily Chuikov, commander of the Soviet 62nd Army during the battle of Stalingrad
1A Games’s Stalingrad expansion introduces TOI fans to the unprecedented, vicious street fighting that came to symbolize the brutality of what the Soviet Union called its Great Patriotic War.
You must have FFG’s original Tide of Iron in order to play the Stalingrad expansion. Don't have FFG's core set? You can help 1A Games publish a new Next Wave core set with special quick-start scenarios by supporting this Kickstarter.
The Stalingrad expansion includes a full complement of Soviet infantry, the German StuG III E and Panzer III (German infantry are needed from the TOI core game), the Soviet T-34/76 medium tank, and introduces the Soviet T-70 light tank (the larger tank image middle right below not to scale) to the TOI series – 90 plastic figures, bases, and vehicles!
The Stalingrad expansion also includes 12 new double-sided urban terrain map boards that show factories, debris-filled streets, major buildings, and even sewer covers that allow access and movement underneath the city ruins.
Eight new scenarios include small, introductory battles to help players to quickly learn the new Stalingrad rules, and four linked campaign scenarios.
BONUS: Our Kickstarter supporters at the STAFF OFFICER ($5) level and most of the higher levels get two new Special Operations cards. The first card is called "Patched Up" and enables you to bring back lightly wounded soldiers into front line service. The second card is called "Supply Depot" that gives an extra 2 command points that may be saved or used immediately to buy strategy cards, initiative, etc. (Both cards can also be obtained as an add-on to any pledge level.)
NOTE: The art for these cards was changed slightly so that they can be quickly identified as special cards that you may choose to use in a scenario (if both players agree) with their own optional advanced rules. If you received the earlier promo cards, we will replace them with these new cards!
EXTRA BONUS: At the PLATOON level, we are offering really nice laser-cut, color-stained wooden Initiative cards (as featured in our video above). All four Initiative cards can also be obtained as an add-on to any pledge level.
REALLY BIG BONUS: 1A Games is now working with Sandboxr, a company that uses new 3D printing technology to create 3D models. Supporters at the COMPANY level will receive two 1.5-inch size copies of the rare German sIG 33B armored self-propelled howitzer that was manufactured specifically for use at Stalingrad (only 12 were made in time for the battle). You get these two models in the same size as the other German TOI vehicles – in either gray color like the other German TOI vehicles, or in color camouflage and markings (your choice). These are true collectors items.
LARGE VERSION sIG 33B: A 3-inch size 3D model (15mm scale) is available at the HEAVY WEAPONS PLATOON level and as a special ADD-ON for just $20 (USA) or $27 (foreign). This sIG 33B is made from sandstone in full color camouflage, with insignia (or in gray if you prefer). A fantastic display model!
Here is a summary of all of the pledge levels and rewards available in this Kickstarter. Open the full size version of this table here.
Shipping to USA addresses is free for the Next Wave TOI core set and Stalingrad expansions, and is included in the add-on pledge level prices. For foreign supporters in Canada and overseas, see the following shipping options table.
The 3-pack foreign shipping in November is for 3 of the exact same game (3 Stalingrads or 3 TOI core sets), not a mix. If you can wait until next March, then we can ship a 3-pack with a mix of Stalingrads and TOI core sets.
The 54 games is the minimum we need to ship one pallet to Germany. That could be 54 Stalingrads or 54 TOI core sets, or a mix if everyone is willing to wait until the TOI core set is released next March. (This will most likely be 54 individual orders, but if one fan wants to buy 54 games...!)
When you pledge, be sure to let us know what country you want the games shipped to so we can estimate if we will reach the 54 games needed to use the third shipping option. Thank you!
Most of the lower level pledge rewards can be added to any other pledge level simply by adding that amount of money to your pledge (and letting us know you did so!). For example, if you want the large sIG 33B model with a copy of the Stalingrad expansion, just add $20 for a USA address or $27 for foreign addresses to the $55 BATTALION pledge level (Canadian and foreign fans also need to choose one of the Foreign Shipping Options available). For example, to add the large sIG 33B model to the $55 pledge level, you would change the $55 to $75 for delivery to a USA address.
Here is the list of available ADD-ONS:
You can add the Stalingrad expansion to a pledge level that does not offer Stalingrad simply by adding $55 to that pledge level.
2 Special Operations cards (Staff Officer pledge level) = $5 USA and foreign addresses. (Yes, every pledge level gets these 2 cards, but if you want more than 1 of each card, you can make this an add-on.)
Next Wave TOI rulebook, Tools of War guide, quick-start scenarios, and reference charts (Intelligence Officer pledge level) = $10 USA, $17 foreign addresses.
Digital 32-page Stalingrad historical booklet and digital Stalingrad War College audio seminar (Squad pledge level) = $15 USA and foreign addresses.
4 laser-cut wooden Initiative cards stained in national colors for Americans, Germans, British, and Soviets (Platoon pledge level) = $18 USA, $22 foreign addresses.
2 small sIG armored self-propelled howitzer 3D models in the same size as other German TOI vehicles, in either gray or camouflage and markings (your choice), plus 2 scenarios designed specifically for these two sIGs (Company pledge level) = $25 USA, $32 foreign addresses.
1 large 3-inch (15mm scale) sIG 3D model in your choice of either gray or camouflage and markings (Heavy Weapons Platoon pledge level) = $20 USA, $27 foreign addresses. PERSONALIZE IT! For $10 more you can get your name on the tank (long names may take two or more lines).
Complete set of hand painted miniatures for the Tide of Iron: Next Wave core boxed set. =$350 (no additional shipping charges anywhere). Please allow 4-6 extra weeks for the painting time on top of the projected delivery date,
This new stretch goal includes three new artillery themed Strategy decks. We have scenarios for their use which we will be releasing online, or you can simply swap out the old decks and use these.
Decks included are: German Artillery Deck, Soviet Artillery Deck #1, and Soviet Artillery Deck #2. If this goal is unlocked, everyone who pledged at the Intelligence Officer ($10) level and up will receive copies of all three decks. Further, these decks will be made available for separate purchase after the kickstarter is successfully concluded.
In the words of General George S. Patton, “Commencing fire; fire at will!”
NOTE: We cannot edit the pledge levels after we re-launch, but we can add stretch goals. The new stretch goals (if any) just won't be noted inside the pledge levels. But we will let everyone know if we add another stretch goal, and every supporter from the $55 pledge level (Battalion) and higher will qualify for ALL stretch goals, including any new ones that we add while the Kickstarter is in progress.
STRETCH GOAL #1 - $28,000
NEW TANK FOR NEXT WAVE TOI: If we hit this goal, everyone from INTELLIGENCE OFFICER ($10 pledge level) and higher will get 4 copies of a new plastic light tank model for the Next Wave TOI core set (including that tank’s stat card and scenarios designed specifically to use this tank). In addition, these four tanks (and stat cards, etc...) will go into the TOI core set.
YOU DECIDE WHAT TANK WE MAKE! Supporters from INTELLIGENCE OFFICER and up may vote for one of the following: American/British M3 Stuart, German Panzer II, or Soviet BT-7. We will produce the winning tank and ship it in March 2014 when we receive the Next Wave TOI core set.
This new stretch goal includes three new Strategy decks and one new set of 10 Operations cards. The decks are as follows: German Air Support Deck #2, German Armored Reinforcement Deck, and Soviet Armored Reinforcement Deck.
The German Air support deck is set for 1941-42 German air power, with different stats reflecting the lesser combat power of the planes.
Unlike the artillery decks in Airborne Division Affirm, the Armored Reinforcement decks are not decks you can add to existing scenarios. We have new scenarios for them which we will be releasing online. Or, if designing your own, both the German and Soviet decks are for the Soviet front 1941-42. Both decks also have expensive command point requirements to use the cards (up to 8 Command in some cases).
The Operations cards are very much Soviet front cards for the 1941-42 time frame; although some could be used for 1939-40 scenarios as well. Cards included in the set are as follows: General Heinz Guderain, Soviet AT Rifle, Winter Camouflage, Soviet Unit Fatigue, Artillery Smoke Screen, Soviet Truck Restrictions, Panzer III d-f models, Stug III a-d models, and Panzer 38T stats.
This set of 4 card decks will be made available to all backers at the Battalion ($55) and higher levels. These cards will be made available for separate purchase after the kickstarter is successfully concluded.
STRETCH GOAL #2 - $38,000
NEW NATIONAL DICE FOR NEXT WAVE TOI: If we hit this goal, everyone from BATTALION ($55 pledge level) and higher will get 4 sets of 10 custom dice – one set each with the American insignia, German insignia, British insignia, and Soviet insignia.
This is the Big One, boys and girls!
This final stretch goal would allow us to produce (earlier than we had originally hoped) a new Map Pack expansion; this time with all new maps! It will feature 9 brand new double-sided map boards and 3 sheets of punch out terrain overlays and the art will match the style of the current maps from Normandy onwards.
Maps in this expansion will include 3 boards with rivers (actual wide rivers to simulate the Rhine or Volga) on both sides (winterized and non-winterized), a 2 map rail yard, a 2 map factory complex, forested hills (winterized and non-), orchards and mixed city maps. The punch out overlays would include such items as long bridges (you’ll need them for the wide rivers, did we mention the wide rivers?), wrecked trains, and various storage tanks to name a few.
When this goal is unlocked it will be made available to everyone from the Battalion ($55) level and up, as an available add-on, and will be made available for separate purchase after the kickstarter successfully concludes. The map pack itself would become available in March 2014 at the same time as the Tide of Iron: Next Wave boxed core set.
Help us launch the Next Wave for the Tide of Iron series
The Next Wave TOI core set and Stalingrad expansion are just the first of many more titles in the Tide of Iron series. Your pledges will be rewarded with some great gifts!

Risks and challenges
The good news is – the Stalingrad expansion is already on its way to stores now!
It takes about 4 months from the time we send all the files and specs off to the factory in China which actually produces the game until we get it back in our warehouse in California. In order to have TOI:NW by March, 2014 we need to send it off to the factory really soon.
However, there is one small hitch; Lunar New Year. China celebrates Lunar New Year and pretty much closes for about a week around the end of January as citizens all across the nation return home to be with family and friends to ring in the Year of the Horse.
We're aware of this hiccup in the production schedule and hope it won't slow things down too much. We wanted you to be aware of it as well.
We are using this Kickstarter to help us launch a new TOI core set and spread the word about 1A Games’s Next Wave products for the Tide of Iron series.
The 3D printing should be completed in November, although this depends upon how many pledges we receive for these incredible models.
Even with unexpected delays, the Stalingrad expansion should ship within 60 days after our Kickstarter project closes. The new Next Wave Tide of Iron core set is in pre-press production and should be received from the factory in March (or early April) of 2014.
We will keep you informed along the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
