Ten years ago, I released my first solo novel, The Silver Ship and the Sea. The first book in a four book series, it is a bold and disturbing story about growing up Other in a world where different is anathema; about six children finding their way in the universe when the world where they were raised proves too small for their potential.

Silver Ship won the Endeavour Award and did well for a debut novel. The second novel in the series came out the day the economy died in 2008.  So only three books of the planned four were published. They are finding new life with Word Fire Press. Even better, they are edited a bit to remove the awkwardness of early books, and thus represent my current skill level better.  We're calling them "Authors Preferred Editions." The first book releases August 19, with the others to follow, including the fourth, much anticipated volume.

In celebration, I am compiling Stories of Fremont's Children, a collection of short stories based on the Fremont's Children universe. Some are reprints (including one that was selected for a Best of the Year anthology), and some original to the collection.

In addition, if we reach the right stretch goals, there will be two bonus stories by guest authors Danielle Ackley-McPhail and J.A. Pitts.

More details about The Silver Ship and the Sea, winner of the 2008 Endeavour Award and the beginning of the Fremont's Children books

Prisoners of a war they were barely alive for…Fremont’s Children must find their way in a world that abhors their very nature, or discover a way to leave it…

In her award-winning novel The Silver Ship and the Sea, kick-off to the Fremont’s Children series, Brenda Cooper explores what it means to be so different that others feel they must oppress you.

Six human but genetically-enhanced children are stranded on the colony planet Fremont by a war between genetic purists and those that would tinker with the code. Orphaned by that war, the only remains of the children’s heritage are an old woman like themselves who was left for near-dead at the end of the war, and a mysterious silver ship that appears to have no doors.

To preserve themselves the children must leave the safety of the insular community and brave the wilds of Fremont, beautiful but dangerous. An echo of their own natures, or a proving ground of their genetic worth?

In this battle of wills and principles, what does the future hold for Fremont’s Children?

Quick Explanation: Kickstarter doesn't really have an intuitive way to do add-ons, and the process can be confusing, so here's a quick explanation.

To add one of the below onto your current pledge, just click on the "Manage Your Pledge" button at the top right of the page, click in the "Pledge Amount" box, and change the pledge amount to reflect the addition of the amount of the add-on you want.

Example: if your current pledge amount is $10, and you want to add a $5 add-on, you would click into the "Pledge Amount" box and change the pledge amount to $15. At the end of the Kickstarter, we'll send out a questionnaire to find out what add-ons you contributed for.

NOTES: all ebooks listed available in .epub, mobi, or .pdf, unless indicated. Also, we can autograph a book to whomever you want and you can order more than one copy of the same book when doing an add-on.

$5 - Add a DRM-Free copy of Stories of Fremont's Children.

Brenda Cooper writes science fiction and fantasy novels and short stories, and sometimes, poetry. Her most recent novel is Wilders, from Pyr and her most recent story collection is Cracking the Sky from Fairwood Press. Brenda is a technology professional and a futurist, and publishes non-fiction on the environment and the future. Her non-fiction has appeared on Slate and Crosscut and her short fiction has appeared in Nature Magazine, among other venues. See her website at www.brenda-cooper.com. Brenda lives in the Pacific Northwest in a household with three people, three dogs, far more than three computers, and only one TV in it.

Award-winning author and editor Danielle Ackley-McPhail has worked both sides of the publishing industry for longer than she cares to admit. In 2014 she joined forces with husband Mike McPhail and friend Greg Schauer to form her own publishing house, eSpec Books.

Her published works include six novels, Yesterday's Dreams, Tomorrow's Memories, Today’s Promise, The Halfling’s Court, The Redcaps’ Queen, and Baba Ali and the Clockwork Djinn, written with Day Al-Mohamed. She is also the author of the solo collections A Legacy of Stars, Consigned to the Sea, Flash in the Can, and Transcendence, the non-fiction writers’ guide, The Literary Handyman, and is the senior editor of the Bad-Ass Faeries anthology series, Gaslight & Grimm, Dragon’s Lure, and In an Iron Cage. Her short stories are included in numerous other anthologies and collections.

J.A. Pitts is a teller of tall tales. Whether he is sharing stories of dirigible crews on alien planets, mutant bunnies on a derelict generation ship, or a young urban blacksmith struggling to understand a hidden world of magic and dragons; he strives to create characters that are so real and emotionally impactful that you want to invite them home for dinner (or maybe get a restraining order to keep them away).

Risks and challenges

All three authors involved in this project are professionals used to meeting deadlines and producing quality work. That having been said, all three also have outside obligations that could occasionally cause delays.

We do not foresee any reason this project will go beyond the estimated deadline, but we do promise to communicated promptly if anything does arise.
