About

Barons of the Galaxy is a Sci-Fi themed online strategy game revolving around industry and trade but also has strong elements of politics through a voting system with other players. There are also interactive large scale events which give it a space opera or galactic dynasty feel.

It is played in a nearly endless galaxy that expands automatically to always provide fresh virgin territory to expand to. Barons of the Galaxy has been inspired by board games like "Twilight Imperium" and "Settlers of Catan" as well as PC games like "Master of Orion" or "Crusader Kings" but in an Massively Multiplayer environment. Anyone who enjoys those types of games should enjoy Barons of the Galaxy.

The game is played through a web browser and is free to play. There is a subscription model for serious players which opens up a few small limitations and gives them access to government positions in the game. There is no cash shop and there are no pay-to-win microtransactions

Players assume the role of a corporation in a near future sci-fi world where the human race has recently mastered space travel. These corporations represent the major industries of the human race which profit by supplying the 16 resources and over 150 different products and services that every city in the quickly expanding galaxy demands. Product prices, volume of goods and the size of populations rise on fall purely on how much product the players can provide to these cities. Trading between corporations who specialize in different goods is often required and military strife is usually inevitable.

As populations become larger the players themselves elect other players to become Governors of cities, Emperors of planets and even Star Lords of entire solar systems. These titles provide the players with taxation income and more political power to be used in voting for the outcome of random interactive events that constantly affect different areas of the game. The game is turn based with all players' orders and movements being executed simultaneously every 10 minutes. Most commands are queued and can be set to loop allowing the players corporations to virtually run themselves. The game is Free to Play with few limitations. Full accounts are $5 a month and allow access to a few features that can be abused on free accounts such as being elected to government positions, certain chat features and uploading custom avatars and corporate logos.

The game is browser based, simply a website that can be launched on any device with no install.

Barons of the Galaxy is already nearly fully developed and mostly playable! If funded we plan to launch the game to the public within a few months.

You can view dozens of screenshots, get more details and even register an account at our website:

Players begin the game by creating a corporation with a name, jingle and starting Research and then are directed to a simple tutorial which explains the basics of play and guides you through the first steps of setting up your empire.

Players can place their first structure, their Corporate Headquarters, in a city anywhere in the starting system which has a resource they are interested in mining. There can be several other players based out of your chosen city also. From there they can sell their products locally or use transports to ship them to other nearby cities with higher market values. From their Corp HQ the players can build other structures locally or transport construction units to other cities or planets to build structures at remote locations.

There are 16 resources across 10 planet types that can be combined to make over 150 products which all the cities have an ever increasing demand for. Players will need to trade with others in different industries to collect the varying resources required to make these higher tier products efficiently.

Random interactive events occur on city, planet and star system wide levels daily. Ranging from simple NPC raids on cities or sudden market movements to quest like events which may require the cooperation of entire planets to avert disasters. The players in the affected locations can usually use their voting power, which is based on their industrial or military might, to alter the direction of events. Players are also elected to govern cities, entire planets or even solar systems which gives them income based on city populations. They are also expected to protect their territory as well as the other players doing business within them.

Players can avoid combat by doing business quietly under the protection of another player ruling their territory. For the combat oriented players there are 25 different military units including spaceships, ground units and defenses, each with their strengths and weaknesses with plenty of situations and rewards for engaging in combat.

How you handle yourself through the changing market values of your products as well as interact with the other players who are also using their influence to affect events is the foundation of the game play in Barons of the Galaxy. You can expect to spend half of your time working your industry and the other half engaging in politics and events.

The game does not revolve around a cash shop. In fact, currently, there is no cash shop and no plans for one until cosmetic features are added to the game. The game is free to play but has a subscription model for more serious players where the difference amounts to allowing them to be elected for a government position.

The game is "A Game" not "A Grind".  While there are upgrades and there are wait times, they are minimal and are in place for game play reasons and not to simply drag the game out for years. There is no linear path of progression that simply takes time to achieve. With the right decisions and a little luck you can catapult yourself into the top ranks or tumble just as easily. We didn't make a game that takes a long time to play, we made a game that can be played for a long time.

It's difficult for the game to be dominated by veterans. The game is designed so that it is nearly impossible for a single player or group to control everything. A single corporation can only be good at a few categories of industry among dozens that exist. A military player cannot have a large force of every unit type of the 20+ that are in the game. Players who try to rampage new players will be met by the most powerful players who rule the cities and planets where they are located. When all else fails, you can liquidate your corporation and relocate into another part of the galaxy if you don't like what's happening in your area.

The game has self-balancing mechanics. The more powerful you become, whether in particular industries, military or political areas, the more resistance you encounter from the game mechanics. If players let the prices of products get high before selling to the cities, the populations of the cities will plummet making large sales impossible. The more military your construct, the more money it takes to maintain them. The more players attack and raid others, the less players and product there will to attack as areas are destroyed and players re-locate. The larger your empire is, the more difficult it is to re-locate elsewhere!

Even small or newer players can suddenly become the focus of entire planets or star systems through events. Half of the game revolves around random interactive events that can drastically affect the city, planet or entire star system you are in. These events can be combat oriented, industrial or story like with multiple stages and usually involve voting by players involved to choose between multiple directions an event can take. Often players voting power for an event is determined by their particular industry which can make small players with the right product suddenly the focus of a system wide event and giving them incredible leverage over even the players who rule the star system. This kind of voting in Massively Multiplayer environment is something that is rarely seen and, combined with the event system, adds an exciting political element.

The game has been developed by just me, Ofir "DrDread" Maimon, as a fun hobby. I am a professional website and database programmer with over 15 years of experience. When I decided to make a real game I figured It would be practical to make it a website with a database back end! I play a lot of games like most of you reading this but I've also hosted and collected board games my entire life. I've experienced a lot of good and bad game mechanics and often modify bad games to be fun again. Barons of the Galaxy is an attempt at putting together many of the game mechanics I have enjoyed most into one game.

I also am fond of hosting worlds for others to play in. I've spent a lot of my youth running board games with friends or being the dungeon master of role playing games. I have even created and ran a successful Hall of Fame awarded persistent world in the PC Game "Neverwinter Nights"  back in the 2000s called "World of Torr". The community loved that world so much they took it over and run a modified version of it to this day.

Another reason why I decided to create this game is that I dislike the current games like it that I have played. I feel that all these games have become cash grabs and are built using the exact same engine using the same mechanics designed to make you spend money. They don't feel like games so much as a heroin addiction. I hope to create a game that is fun to play and keep playing by it's own merits, just like other games that have stood the test of time. With your help I can bring this game world to the public and hopefully see it enjoyed by everyone!

The game is almost finished and it's already running on our server just like our website. We already have a batch of our backer rewards ready to ship also. There's nothing financially that will prevent us from delivering a "working" game.

The one thing the game is missing that we cannot make ourselves with any dignity however are the artwork and 3d models. There are about 25 different units and structures we need artwork for. We had some work done from a couple of different artists already and we have a favorite. You can view his work, which includes a couple of our ships here:

Dmitry confirmed that he is available to work on the project. The money from this campaigns minimum will mostly go to him. We also have a backup studio who made a couple of ships for us that we can use if Dmitry becomes unavailable Depending on how much money we raise we would also like to use Grafit Studio to rework our splash image and perhaps make portrait images for us. We've already had chats with them about how much that will cost. They do beautiful illustrations:

http://www.grafitart.com/#!illustration/cn70

We've already spent thousands of dollars on various things up to this point and have exceeded our allowable "Spousal Threshold" for this project. We would love your help to to bring this game to life with inspiring visuals!

If you love this project and want to help by mentioning it to anyone who might be interested that would be great. If you want to help financially, these are the rewards we're offering:

Backer Rewards Details

Free months of subscription to the game

After the official launch of the game, your account will have a reward item available that can be redeemed to give your account paid status and/or extend your paid through date by the number of months specified by your backer level. Merchant = 1, Captain = 2, Baron = 3, Emperor = 6, Star Lord = 12 months, Qazar Dragon = sometime in the year 2100.

Permanent bonus to your corporate headquarters and founder iconYour Corp HQ provides a small production bonus to all your surrounding structures. The bonus is 35% in the same city, 30% on the same planet and 15% in the same solar system (subject to change!). The founder bonus will add +5% to each of those (40%, 35%, 20%) as long as your account is not deleted for inactivity. For context, every level in your corporation can add +25% to +10% (bonuses smaller at higher levels) to a single category of production potentially giving you +150% bonus at level 10.

The founder icon will most likely be a subtle graphic and/or frame around your player avatar to signify your founder status. We may make subtle color differences for the different backer levels as well.

Access to the Beta test
There will be a beta test of the game sometime before launch for probably a month or more depending if there are any major problems. Backers of Captain level or higher will be invited to join the beta test when it happens. The game will launch fresh after that.

Naming a starting city in Sol SystemThe Sol System, which represent our solar system of 9 planets, is the starting "safe" zone of the game. The cities there can never be destroyed. The cities of Earth are already named but the cities of the 8 other planets are up for grabs. There will be 25 cities per planet which makes 200 total to name.

The first 200 backers who back the project at $25 or more you will get to name one of these starting cities. Backers beyond the first 200 will get to add a city name to a priority list in the database that will be used when new cities are created elsewhere in the galaxy.

Only reasonable names at a 12 character Max will be considered. "Reasonable" meaning no slurs, controversial acronyms or anything inappropriate for kids etc. Names like "Iamwellhung" and "Holdnmygroin" are not reasonable!

Barons of the Galaxy promotional coin:

Emperor Reward - Silver and Blue Coin
Emperor Reward - Silver and Blue Coin
Live image of promotional coin

We have already received a batch of the above coin. Hopefully we will be ordering more of them once we know how many backers we have.

The Star Lord Reward - Black and Gold version of the coins have not been ordered yet as we don't know how many to expect. They will be identical to the Emperor level coin above but gold plated with a black instead of blue band along the edge. Please use the above image + Your Imagination to visualize what the Black and Gold version will look like!

Shipping: There is no additional shipping for United States. Canada backers please add +$5. European union backers add +$15. The coins are pretty heavy. We won't send to any other country. Qazar Dragon Backers get free shipping!

There are some features to the game we are considering working on but they do not require more funding, just some time. Our plan was to spend extra money on promotion, advertising etc. ... and soda, we drink a lot of soda. However there are some features that will cost more money because of the artwork needed. We would love to add them if we greatly exceed our goal.

$10,000 - Commanders and Character Dynasties. Your corporation will have access to commander units which have different attributes in either combat, industry or politics. These characters represent your family dynasty and can be sent to and placed in different areas of your empire. The number of units you have at any given time is based on your corporations level (1-10 max). Your eldest character runs your corporation and their bonuses apply to everything (good or bad). These characters will all be randomly related somehow; brother, son, daughter, spouse etc. and there is a line of succession. If any are killed they are replaced randomly to your maximum. Certain relationships can have special bonuses (Spouses working together, Brothers might dislike each other) in addition to other perks they might have. The extra funding would go to the artwork to make semi-dynamic portraits of these units and possibly their ships.

$25,000 - Multiple skins/models of each unit type. In order to make different shapes and models to the units we would have to have an artist make another full set of 3D models. With enough funding we can make at least 3 sets of all 25 units possibly using different artists. Gaining access to different models for your units is the only cosmetic micro-transaction we were considering incorporating.

(starting to get REALLY optimistic at this point)

$100,000 - Begin working on a competitive team based capital ship strategic action game for PC based on the Barons of the Galaxy units and universe called "Heroes of the Armada" (working title). Teams of players take command of capital ships and fighter / bomber / varitek squadrons in a strategic real time game based on maneuvering and angle of attacks played in 5-10 minute rounds. Multiple players would command the larger ships to allocate power, maneuver and fire weapons. Ships lose critical systems, weapons and maneuvering abilities as they are damaged. in addition, gravity affecting black holes, stealth activating asteroid fields and other battlefield elements are present forcing everyone to react to dynamic situations.

(out of ideas, but since we're dreaming...)

1 million dollars! - Begin work on an animated short film which depicts the events of "The Story" section of the website. The story page on the website quickly describes the world plummeting into chaos and war after Russia shoots down a small alien ship and reverse engineers some of its technology. But the commander put in place to lead Russia to victory turns on the leaders, killing them all, and then forcing the world to create a working world federation which bring humanity back from the brink and takes them to the stars... (I think i forgot the SPOILER warning)

Getting a real writer to elaborate on the story and characters and then making an Anime style action movie out of it is a dream that my inner child experiences at bedtime.

This is the last annoying header graphic we promise

Risks and challenges

We've been slowly working on this game for some time and it is virtually complete already. We're cautiously confident we can bring out a full working game within a few months. Most of our expected backer rewards (the silver coins) have already made, delivered and ready to send out. More coins can be ordered after being funded and will show up in a weeks time.

The biggest concerns after being successfully funded are that the game doesn't have some catastrophic bugs or we lose stability on our servers. Technical problems that down the game for extended periods of time. Successful hack attempts. There are also minor concerns about having only one or two artists making a numerous amount of assets in a short time.

Luckily, we do this kind of thing for a living already! The project is mainly developed and maintained by one person, Ofir "DrDread" Maimon, who has been a website and database programmer for over 15 years and already owns the server and all the supporting software. He is also financially and emotionally stable (hopefully remains so!). He is supported by his friends and even his wife all of whom work in the tech industry as Database administrators, Network Engineers or IT managers. He is also pragmatic, a realist, and successfully works against deadlines on a regular basis.

We're certain there will be snags or hiccups in pushing this project to completion but we're also confident that we're at least qualified to make the attempt =)
