About

The next step

The next stage is to produce 60 Charlie Noble bags, 120 Bats, 360 squash balls with the logos on, 60 sets of Boule and 120 drawstring bags. The supply chain is complete so the money would be used for materials and labour. The sewing patterns for The Charlie Noble have been cut, the same is true for the drawstring bags, the laser CAD drawings written for the Boule and the CNC machines programmes have been written for the initial cutting of the bats. The branding irons for the bats have been ordered; they should be with us in the next week, photos will go up as soon as the first pair of bats is branded. The same is true of the squash balls, the printing die is being produced and we should have our first Charlie Noble squash ball in the next week!

Charlie Noble

Charlie Noble brings you traditional park and beach games all wrapped up in a beautiful leather bag and draws on British manufacturing. The leather bag, The Charlie Noble, is made from Scottish leather and stitched in London with a unique design.

The different colour schemes
The different colour schemes

The Bat and Ball

The bats are made of American Maple and Walnut and completely fabricated in the UK. The woods are first planed down to size and thickness then bonded together. They are then cut to shape and the handles attached by hand. And finally hand finished to make sure they are a perfect flowing shape before being varnished to bring out the colour of the woods. The varnish also ensures the bats are completely protected in any environment. The bats come with three Charlie Noble squash balls that are made by the last British squash ball maker.

The Boule

The Boule are produced where the game originated, in France, then laser engraved in Cheltenham, UK. This is a wonderful game.

The drawstring bags

The fantastic drawstring bags are double seamed, so are incredibly strong and impregnated with Teflon™ to repel water. The bags are also completely machine washable. The drawstring itself is made of 550 paracord, which was invented for parachutes during WW2 so is strong and versatile and adds another little bit of history to the Charlie Noble range.

The prototype phase has been completed so all we need now is to go into production and that’s where you lovely Kickstarters come in.

The origin of the idea

The idea came when I was on holiday with some friends and I thought, wouldn't it be great if we had a stylish bag with some very well made games, that could also be used for different occasions but all drawing on British manufacturing and craftsmanship. But there needed to be a twist, a classic with a new take. So we have; a leather bag but without straps or buckles, a set of bat and ball made from luxury woods, the squash ball made by the last British squash ball maker, the Boule laser engraved here in the UK and the drawstring bags; a cotton drill made in the UK imbued with Teflon to repel water and pulled together with paracord, the same string the Americans and British used with their parachutes during the Second World War.

The Charlie Noble Collection
The Charlie Noble Collection

The name ‘Charlie Noble’

The name is unequivocally British and also has a story behind it. Charlie Noble was a merchant sailor from 1850 and used to insist his crew rise early every morning to shine the smoke stack, the chimney, to make sure everybody knew when Charlie Noble was coming into port. It is the pride of the man and coupled with a slither of eccentricity that the name and the captain Charlie Noble fit perfectly for what we want to achieve; produce high quality British made products that you want to show off and with an element of eccentricity and are great fun to play.

The music

The music in parts of the video is taken from the song 'Free to run' by a fantastic British rock band Tenth Electric.

Please note

Due to the nature of the materials used in the project there will be variations between the different products themselves. For example, the colour of the leather, no 2 bags will have the exact same colouring, the wood on the bats will vary in grain size and pattern and slight variation in shape, this is due to the manufacturing process and wood drying process.

In addition, the cotton used to demonstrate the Teflon™ is not a colour offered.

Risks and challenges

The major challenges have been sourcing the materials for the products and finding people willing to produce the samples. The materials have been selected on the basis of their quality and suitability for their roles. Similarly, there have been issues with design and prototyping, to make sure the products adhere to a very high standard and can be produced within the projected costs with the capability of producing larger volumes.

The patterns for the leather has been produced, similarly, the patterns for the cotton bags, the CAD drawings and machine parts have all been completed for the bat and ball, along with the dye to print the logo on the squash balls. The production side of Charlie Noble is in place, the money would be used to purchase materials and cover labour costs.
