We're back, baby!
Just in time for London 2012... As Michael Phelps and his Olympians go for gold, so will Blake Martin (one of our film's heroes) and her teammates. We are making THE SWIMMING MOVIE, the first one to get the details of the sport right, made by swimmers for swimmers. We are shooting our movie in an Olympic Trials pool (from Omaha 2008), and we're going for gold.
COACH OF THE YEAR is an independent kid-friendly sports comedy film based on the true story of the Virginia swim team that tried to win a state championship... without a pool to practice in.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Making a film this size costs a lot! This is the second of three Kickstarter campaigns for us. The pre-production campaign provided us with seed money to get our preparations started, including casting and location scouting. We have solidified most of our locations and are currently well into our filming prep.
This marks our production campaign, which is critical to help with all the costs of shooting a feature film!
Our post-production campaign will launch next fall to get us through editing/sound design and finishing costs.
But we need your help today! We're shooting in just a few weeks, in Richmond, VA (my hometown) and we hope you'll join up with us, as this amazing project takes shape. Thanks so much for watching. We hope this picture will not only entertain, but also inspire kids everywhere to learn how to swim.
COACH OF THE YEAR has a mission to entertain while encouraging kids to learn to swim (thus preventing accidental drowning). We are uniting with organizations and businesses around the country. Support our film and our initiative today.
Partners & Sponsors (w/ more to come...)
COACH OF THE YEAR combines the talents of writer/director David Stott (48 Hour Film Project, The Match), producer Melissa Gundlach (CBS, ABC, NBC, ESPN) and casting director Donna McKenna (Heart & Soul, Excuse Me for Living) in a kid-friendly sports comedy that has been called ‘The Bad News Bears in a Swimming Pool’.
ORIGINAL KICKSTARTER PITCH:
Hi guys. I'm Coach Dave. The idea for COACH OF THE YEAR has been a long time coming. I have been a swim coach for fifteen years now.
A family friend said to me, years ago, 'why don’t you make a movie about swimming?' I demurred, said I was having too much fun with my other projects to stop and focus on a sports movie, but what was obvious to her became increasingly obvious to me: it was the story I knew best.
Now, after ten years in New York, internships at off-off Broadway theatres, production jobs at commercial production houses, guest artist work at Manhattan Theatre Club and my documentary filmmaking experience for Harvard/United Nations, the path is clear. Every experience I’ve had in New York has gotten me ready to make this film. I know how to make it now. I know what story I want to tell.
