About

Hello. My name is Octavio Pardo and I am a type designer from Spain. I have collaborated with several foundries including La Typofonderie and TypeTogether. I am also responsible for typefaces such as this and this. :)

The Tiananmen Font Project: the Name

The Tiananmen Font Project is a set of five typefaces to express opposition to the Status Quo. They cover a wide spectrum of potential voices and feelings involved over the lifetime of a protest. The entire project is inspired by the terrible recession that Spain has been suffering recently. However, the name is taken from the Chinese square where more than 2000 protestors were killed by the Chinese government in 1989.

The image of “the man of Tienanmen” made a huge impact on me when I was a child. I think there is no greater symbol of opposition to oppression, so I wanted my typeface to carry that name.

The Fonts

The five typefaces are Strike, Riot, Revolution, Guerrilla & Symbols. Each references a different degree of protest

Strike + Symbols (Occupy Wall Street is a global movement)
Strike + Symbols (Occupy Wall Street is a global movement)

Strike is a solid sans serif with open counters. This makes it more readable from a distance. It is strong and solid.

Guerrilla is a stencil version of Strike, for when you cannot print and must spray your message (or want to play with a different effect in print).

Symbols is a set of dingbats to empower the message.

Riot + Symbols (from a protest in Toronto)

Riot is a quite unconventionally constructed script font, with a reverse stress, and the letters are less angular than expected for the style. It is suitable for more informal messages.

Revolution (translated from a protest in Kiev)
Revolution (translated from a protest in Kiev)

Revolution is a more complex design. It simulates rapid brush-script lettering. Several versions of each glyph are designed and automatically substituted to avoid unrealistic repetition. This special "OpenType" code is carefully crafted for you to control the amount of spatter.

Going Technical

Tiananmen challenges the regular composition of a type family. A study of history of typography reveals that the usual structure of regular, italic, bold, bold italic it has developed in an arbitrary way. The Tiananmen Font Family is related in two different ways which are also equally arbitrary:

1. Spacing: The four fonts share the same metrics. In that way the user can compose his message and then decide his level of anger without altering the layout.

Because of the coordinated spacing, you can write your message and then change your “tone” without altering the layout

2. Construction: the letters have a common construction core inspired mainly by both Riot and Revolution. In the case of Strike some of these features stand out as idiosyncratic. However, when you think of the font as part of a system, the connections are obvious.

The reason

I started this project two years ago, and have devoted countless hours to bring my vision into fruition. Initially, my intention was to do a single, simple font. After a few months, the project expanded to its current state in order to fully realize my vision. With appropriate funding, I expect to complete the project in three months. Although my original intent was to make it available for the public free of charge, it has become too big and too complex for me to be able to dedicate enough time into it as a hobby project.

Wait a minute, after all this work you are not going to do it, if it does not get funded? (The Achievement)

If this Kickstarter is not successful, due to financial reasons, I will have to put aside this project for now. With your help, I can take the time to focus and get it done, and make all the fonts available for free for non-commercial use. Only those who want to use the font in commercial projects will have to pay a modest license fee: $90 for the entire family.

What is The Money For?

I decided to run this Kickstarter for three purposes:

  • To pay a professional web designer to build a website where the font will be hosted and available for download. This website must have good protection for the fonts and a payment service for donations and commercial licenses.
  • To produce all the goodies for backers :D
  • To provide sufficient financial assistance to finish the project with a foreseeable deadline, making the font available for public use free of charge in the near future

Rewards

Since the fonts are not yet ready, I do not want to present any goodies to be considered as final. However, I have been doing some mock-ups and I am very excited about the potential of the fonts for printed and other media, especially Revolution and Symbols. We will be producing postcards, posters and t-shirts and you will be able to choose one of the designs as part of your reward package

Add-ons

You might prefer to group your own rewards. For any level of reward #5 or higher, add 3£/$5 for one postcard or 9£/$15 for 10; add 12£/$20 for the specimen booklet; 18£/$30 for the process book; and 21£/$35 for a poster or a t-shirt.

The Appreciation Clause

Apart from the goodies, there is also the "appreciation clause." If this Kickstarter is not successful, those of you who believe in this project and buy the fonts now (reward #6 and over) will still receive the fonts for free once they are eventually released.

Understanding Limited

Understanding Limited and the CEO Dave Crossland are the best possible collaborators for me on this project. Understanding Limited is a company specialized in all the matters related to the Software Freedom Movement, with a special focus on libre graphics. Mr Crossland is helping me with the business aspect of this project: especially the licensing legalities and the marketing of the project. He is also responsible for the software development of the OpenType code that powers the Tiananmen Revolution font style, and also contributes to the programming of the project's website. When he first saw the project, he loved it and begged me to be a part of this Kickstarter.

Stretch Goals

I m not a big fan of stretch goals because that implies thinking the project is going to have a success you cannot assume. But to be fair to the highest backers I have to set one. Unfortunately my english is not very good, so the process book will be written in spanish. If the project reaches £8500/$14000, I'll have the book translated to english by a professional.

The Future

I am kind of a romantic, so I imagine this project growing and expanding. I imagine the fonts being really useful to everyone who needs them. I imagine the website of the project becoming a reference for protestors everywhere. I imagine the number of fonts growing thanks to collaborations with other type designers. I imagine Symbols growing and expanding thanks to the requests for new symbols by the users. I imagine each one of the fonts growing in language support, through Latin to Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew... becoming a truly universal tool.

But whatever that future is, I need to take the next step. So thanks for helping me make it true.

Besides my wonderful backers, a big thanks to many many people who reviewed this project before its launch on Kickstarter. Special thanks to Dave Crossland, CEO of Understanding Limited, and Thomas Phinney, Font Expert, for providing all the support & advice on running a font Kickstarter.

Risks and challenges

Revolution is a nice font, but it is involves a complex production process. The drawing takes a long time and the code embedded in the font will require good work, too. No surprise, it is taking the longest to get right. But I am confident that in a matter of months I will make it the exact way it should be: A powerful, realistic and very cool font. I will not be happy with anything less.
