About this project
Set in the West Indies, The Pirate Republic is a strategic, immersive combat exploration game for 1–5 pirates. Players choose from a number of historical pirates and explore dangerous locations full of royal navies, heavily defended forts, treasure fleets, and pirate hunters.
Taking place during the sunrise of the Golden Age of Piracy, the game introduces a number of innovative mechanics that let you play a fully cooperative or fully competitive adventure.
Through daring feats and plunder on the high seas, gameplay remains faithful to this rich time period of revolt and revolution from which the legendary Golden Age pirates continue to live on in our movies, TV shows, and popular culture.
Are you ready to add to the legend of adventure and swashbuckling glory?
It's time to embrace that inner pirate...in all of us.
The Pirate Republic is much more than a classic hack-and-slash game. Like the best medium complexity games, this one requires strategic thinking, clever planning, a little bit of luck, and exemplary teamwork to succeed.
We don’t like complicated Kickstarters, so we’ve made this one as simple as possible. There are just four pledge levels for you pirates: Basic Edition, Collector's Elite, Art Connoisseur, and Legend.
We realize some of you pirates out there like to show off your swagger—we've got you covered.
As an add-on for $17, we also have a custom dice tray. Or, you can spend your doubloons for $25, and get 11 steel miniatures. The miniatures replace the Pirate Hunter and Treasure Fleet tokens in the game. Combine the two add-ons for an even sweeter deal of $31 (totaling $11 dollars off in combined savings).
Or, you can throw us $30 coin for a neoprene game play mat. Combine the entire lot (dice tray + miniatures + play mat) for the sweetest deal of $51 (totaling $21 dollars off in combined savings!).
To add these little beauties to your pledge, add $17 (dice tray); $25 (steel miniatures); $31 (dice tray + miniatures); $30 (neoprene play mat); or, $51 (for all of 'em) per game order.
To keep shipping costs low, pirates can add 1 to each game order for up to 2 games. Manually enter the $ total when making your pledge or click the blue "Manage" button next to a previously made pledge.
All pledges must be made in full by March 29th. We don't use a pledge manager—backers may NOT increase their pledge or add on more items at the KS prices after the campaign ends.
What's better than pirates? More pirates.
Your shipment will include every stretch goal unlocked during the campaign, regardless of your reward level!
So the more people who support the project, the more goals get unlocked. With your help, we can squeeze over 30% more value into that metaphorical cannon bore, and fire off a more fully stuffed game to you!
With the game's modular gameplay, you get to decide if tonight will be competitive or cooperative. Don't worry, you saboteurs, there is room on the ship for you too.
Next, with no fixed scenario, it’s as simple as drawing cards, choosing the direction to explore, rolling the sailing die, and flipping tokens on the game board to fight.
Each time you decide where to go, you'll experience new danger as you carry out secret missions, squash mutinies, or maybe have a go at the treasure fleet, teasing you with her sweet riches. Each location becomes a real risk to your hard-won progress.
So do you return to your pirate haven to rest and spend part of a turn strengthening up? Or do you throw caution to the wind and press on, praying that the next enemy won't be beyond your capabilities?
After all, you are a pirate and no one tells you what to do...
Combat is both fast and deadly in The Pirate Republic.
The game rewards clever players and punishes sea-rovers trying to go somewhere fast without any sense of direction or pursue "all sail, no wind" strategies. Players must time their encounters in order to fight more effectively and strengthen their pirate.
We will pre-pack The Pirate Republic in a robust mailer box at the factory, and use quality fulfillment companies in each region to keep customs fees, VAT, and shipping costs as low as possible so you can back more games! All pledge levels include USD $15 for shipping, freight, and customs, though backers in some regions will need to pay additional fees, as follows:
Backers are limited to two games per pledge (a mix of any two versions of the game is fine; only pay the shipping fee once per pledge, not once per game).
To add more games beyond the first, or to buy add-ons, manually enter the money total when making your pledge or click the blue "Manage" button next to your existing pledge.
Check out the rules for The Pirate Republic to see how it blends inspirations from Dungeons and Dragons™ (critical hits and misses), Mage Knight® (card combat), Dead of Winter® (chaotic events), and Shadows Over Camelot® (sabotage).
Once this campaign funds, we will bring on professional game editor Joshua Yearsley—whose work includes Vast: The Crystal Caverns and Lagoon: Land of the Druids—to revamp the rulebook and cards, ensuring they read as well as the game plays.
We will support game stores around the world by offering Kickstarter versions of the game to retailers during the campaign. We package 5 games into 1 carton, carton size: ~401x400x274mm, Gross weight per carton, ~14-18KG depending on reward tier.
If you're a retailer, please contact Tom at email@example.com during the campaign for pricing information. After the campaign, you can reserve retail copies of The Pirate Republic by contacting our distribution broker.

Risks and challenges
This is not our first voyage, and we've done well to limit any fog and friction keeping us from setting sail. We are fully aware of potential delays that may happen with products that are produced in China—the common ones being production, shipping, Mother Nature, and customs delays.
Fair winds and following seas is the goal this time. This way we can complete production by May and get the games to you in August or September.
We've printed a preproduction run of ten copies to ensure the manufacturing quality of the game. People who have played and playtested these copies were over the moon with our component quality.
The design is complete, and the rulebook and components will have one final revision post launch, taking into account the hopes of a solo variant and 5th-player expansion.
Products presented on this Kickstarter page during the campaign may be subject to change. By pledging on this Kickstarter, you acknowledge that the final look and contents of the pledges may change from what is presented at the start of the campaign. Our goal, of course, is to keep changes to an absolute minimum.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
