Many of you have asked for details regarding the battle system we are planning to use in Lords of Discord, so here it is!
The game has a unit growth system that allows a relatively weak warrior, through battle, to progress to the next level and become a much more formidable opponent, able to inflict great damage and also gain additional abilities. A simple archer can become the deadliest of assassins with poison arrows, a peasant can become a knight with impenetrable armour.
The death in battle of even one experienced unit can lead to a devastating defeat, which means players must carefully plan each battle. In the growth system each race has several class of units, each differing from the other by their skills and abilities. For example, archers can attack any enemy units on the battlefield from afar but they are quite vulnerable in close combat battles due to their lack of life points. Therefore, they must be places behind knights with good armour. Archers also have the highest initiative stat which allows them to usually attack first in battle, a player can use this opportunity to neutralise an enemy's mages or assassins. The same goes for mages, a small amount of life points and a low initiative stat is compensated with the high damage they can do to the whole enemy squad with one spell.
On the contrary, close combat warriors have the highest amount of life points, protected by thick armour and therefore become a living shield for mages and archers. They can only attack the first row of enemy warriors which keeps the opponent's long-range units safe at the beginning of battle. Among ordinary units each race also has titans, mighty creatures that cause great close-combat damage but occupy two slots in the squad. The titans are quite cheap to hire but require vast experience to progress to the next level.
It's all depends on your strategy and the race you choose, Demons tend to use fast and furious attack from titans and mages, Humans usually prefer playing defensively using healers and ranged attackers like archers. How you choose to level up your squad and choose unit types is up to your playing style.
