About this project

RoboTales is a science fiction/fantasy chapter book series for readers, ages 8-12. In each story, Robo the robot dog befriends a child who helps him gather a clue to the mystery of who built him and why. The series is planned to have eight books, but we are starting with the first three. These books are also fractured fairytales. This means the plot loosely follows a traditional fairy tale, but we’ve changed things enough so that it isn’t completely obvious. One of the fun parts for readers is that they will get to guess which fairy tale the story was based on.

With this type of book, the illustrations matter just as much as the story does. Each book will have an original, illustrated cover and one illustration per chapter. The books have 10 chapters each, so that’s a total of 33 illustrations we need to have commissioned. We found the perfect artist for RoboTales. We just need some help raising the funds to pay her.

Here is a little bit about the first three books:

Book One: Tinker

“Recycle and create.” That’s Tinker’s motto. He’s an inventor, who lives with his uncle and cousins on planet Kitz. He finds out that the Invention Institute is having a Recycle Race to choose a new apprentice for their boarding school for young inventors. Tinker builds an airbike for the contest. When Tinker’s cruel cousins destroy it, Tinker gets some help from a robot dog and fixes his entry in time to compete.

Book Two: Mardok and the Seven Exiles

Riv Mardok is the bravest cadet in the Space Force Military Training Academy on planet Dabon. “Protect the helpless” is his motto. When he kills a cyborg gragon, General Gruss sends him on a special mission to kill the infamous Ice Beast. Mardok gets lost on his quest. He meets a robot dog that leads him to a cabin where seven boys live. The boys were each exiled after catching General Gruss experimenting with cyborgs. Together Mardok, the seven exiles, and Robo must take on General Gruss and the Ice Beast to keep from becoming cyborgs themselves.

Book Three: The Tiny Cyborg

When President Cassian goes missing on a planet with super strong gravity, his son, Darius, makes a deal with Dr. Fleed. He will wear a prototype of a new hard suit to protect his body on the planet’s surface. It’s the only way to find his father. Darius might be small, but he believes that “small people can do big things.” Wearing the hard suit not only makes Darius a cyborg, he temporarily loses his voice. He takes a robot dog to the planet’s surface to speak for him. There he learns that Dr. Fleed has turned the planet’s captives into a cyborg army. Only Darius and Robo can save them from Dr. Fleed’s control.

Map: I’m obsessed with fictional maps. I love looking at them, and once I come to love the story that takes place in that world, I’m even more enthralled. So when I started to brainstorm the RoboTales series, one of the first things I did was draw a map. This map will help readers follow Robo’s journey in each story. It will be included in the front of each book.

Clues: At the end of each story, the reader is asked to answer several questions and fill in the blanks. The answers reveal which place Robo will travel to in the next book.

Themes: Each RoboTales adventure has a theme represented by a motto the main character lives by or learns through the course of the story. The themes for the first three books are:

Tinker (Book 1): Lonely vs. Loved
Mardok and the Seven Exiles (Book 2): Pride vs. Teamwork
The Tiny Cyborg (Book 3): Doubt vs. Self-worth

Educational Tie-Ins: In the back of each story are Robo’s Science Facts and Robo’s Lit Facts. Robo’s Science Facts give a do-it-yourself science experiment that relates to the story, like making a potato battery or a fixed pulley. Robo’s Lit Facts give a list of vocabulary words and uses examples of rhetoric used in the story.

Real Science: The majority of science fiction stories for children tend to deal with planets defined by a single setting or climate: the ice planet, the desert planet. This is fun, but such planets aren’t very realistic. So we tried to create planets with different astronomical attributes such as stronger or lighter gravity, strange tides, or shorter orbits to get kids thinking.

I usually write for teens or adults. But since both my kids were in elementary school, I wanted to write a story for them. My son and I came up with the idea of writing science fiction fairytales. But it wasn’t until we came up with the title RoboTales, that we really got excited. This series has science fiction and/or fantasy settings. Readers gather clues in each story, learn something, and enjoy the adventure. And what kid doesn’t love a robot dog?

While Luke did not write the books, he has helped me brainstorm the plots, characters, planets, creatures, and has helped with editing too. I will give him a co-writing credit on the series.

Here is my author bio:

Jill Williamson is a chocolate loving, daydreaming, creator of kingdoms and the award-winning author of several young adult books including the Blood of Kings trilogy, Replication, the Mission League series, and the Safe Lands trilogy. She lives in Oregon with her husband and two children and a whole lot of deer.

Meet Kirbi. A vintage inspired illustrator living in the Detroit area. Kirbi Fagan is an award-winning book cover illustrator specializes in creating art for young readers. Her illustrations are known for their magic themes, vintage textures, bright colors, and powerful characters. She received her bachelor’s degree in Illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design. Kirbi lives by two words… “spread joy.”

We commissioned Kirbi to draw this awesome picture of Robo.

Isn't she amazing?

This should give you a good idea about what the RoboTales book covers and interior illustrations will look like.

Kickstarter is a new way to help bring creative projects to life. We’ve all had great ideas, but most of us don’t have the money to invest in starting a business. Kickstarter gives people a way to achieve their dreams by giving them a place to share their idea.

Reaching our goal on Kickstarter would help us gather book buyers in advance. In backing our campaign, you are, in a sense, pre-ordering these books. That way we can use the money to pay the illustrator now, and you’ll get the books once they release in October 2015.

Kickstarter is an all or nothing program, though. If we reach our goal within the allotted time period, those who backed us will be asked to pay the amount they pledged. If we fail to gather enough supporters by the end date, no one is charged and we get no money to pay our illustrator.

We’re using Kickstarter to fund RoboTales because illustrating this book costs more money that we have to pay up front. We plan to personally absorb all the other costs associated with self-publishing, including producing and shipping out the books to our backers. But if we raise more than our $4,995 goal, the money will be used in the following ways.

Kickstarter Goal: Art: $4,995

Extra Funds Go To:

If we raise over $4995, the money will be put towards the production costs of the book, which will be paid for in this order:

Kickstarter and credit processing fees: around $500
Editing: $500
Typesetting: $300
Proofing: $150
Ebook design: $300
Marketing and Advertising: $500
Off-set Printing: $1500
Shipping the books to backers: $750

Thanks for checking out the RoboTales project. It’s humbling to find people willing to part with a few dollars to help us achieve a dream.

Let us know if you have any questions for me or my son Luke, and we will do our best to answer them as soon as possible. Please share this page with any friends or family members you think might like these books or might be willing to support Luke and me. We can’t wait to get these books into the hands of young readers! Thanks for your time and consideration.

Cyber hugs,

Risks and challenges

All three books are written, so any delays that might crop up would be in the editing, design, or production areas. That said, I have written and published thirteen books, four of which were self-published. I am confident that I will be able to ship all my rewards in October 2015. The only delay outside my control would be if the illustrator backs out or if, for some reason, we reach an impasse. In that case, I would need to find a new illustrator, which could delay the October release date.
