DEADHEART is a short film set in The Young Lands, a world where the black smoke billowing on the horizon is just as likely from a steam locomotive as a fire-breathing dragon. Grizzled gunfighters stand toe-to-toe with ancient eldritch forces. Railroad magnates vie for control of mysterious ruins and otherworldly resources. It's a world that the writer/director Rob Haffey has explored in short stories and one which he is currently writing a novel about.
DEADHEART tells one of the countless tales of The Young Lands. It follows Marshal Wesdragon, a proud, aging lawman tasked with transporting a hooded, anonymous prisoner across the countryside. En route, he comes to suspect that the prisoner is his son's murderer. He is forced to choose between fulfilling his duties or slating his thirst for revenge. Meanwhile, Ezzrat the Ancient - a killer of preternatural talent - closes in with his own designs on the prisoner.
DEADHEART will be shot on the RED Epic and is set largely aboard the Strasburg Railroad, a beautifully maintained period locomotive. The filmmakers are passionate about westerns and hope to eschew the traditional subdued color palette of the genre in favor of a kinetic, saturated fantasy atmosphere.
Ezzrat the Ancient, our imposing supernatural villain, will be played by Raw Leiba, star of HBO'S The Wire and recently The Heat:
It is our hope that DEADHEART will serve as a proof-of-concept for an eventual feature film adaptation.
Our team is composed of filmmakers devoted to their craft. We have worked together on numerous previous projects and are confident in our ability to collaborate and create this world.
ROB HAFFEY - WRITER/DIRECTOR
Rob is a recent winner of the Screencraft Screenwriting Fellowship:
He has written and directed numerous short films as well as music videos, including some for the popular rap collective Odd Future. Rob is an acolyte of both the western and fantasy genres. He has been developing the world of DEADHEART for years and will be pulling influences from everything from The Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire to Once Upon a Time in the West and The Assassination of Jesse James. He is currently finishing his final year in Drexel University's Film & Video Program, after which he plans to move immediately to Los Angeles. He has interned with Heyday Films and River Road Entertainment, the production companies behind Gravity and 12 Years a Slave, respectively.
MIKE KOZIEL - CINEMATOGRAPHER
Mike is the founder of MikeK Media:
Mike never lets a week go by without shooting multiple projects, from commercials to music videos to narrative films. He is happiest with a camera in hand and is rarely found without one. Mike and Rob have worked together on over a dozen projects. Mike has a very specific vision for DEADHEART that will ensure it looks unlike any western yet committed to screen.
MINKA - THE COMPOSERS
Popular Philadelphia band Minka will be creating the score for DEADHEART. Rob and Mike have shot music videos for the band and have a great working relationship with the members. Minka is crafting music for the film that will be modern and exciting without losing sight of the film's western heritage.
ASHLEY BANDIER - PRODUCTION DESIGNER
Ashley is excited to work on DEADHEART because it offers her the opportunity to fully flex her creative muscles. The sets and costumes will be influenced by multiple genres and entirely unique to this film. She has been devouring films, artwork, and books for months in preparation for this project.
DEMETRIOS TZAMARAS & RASHIKA KAUSHIK - THE PRODUCERS
Demetrios and Rashika have been toiling away since early last year to realize DEADHEART. Demetrios has secured our fantastic locations and only slightly less fantastic food while Rashika has been responsible for our concept art and hiring our talented actors. Their tireless work has brought us to this point, and we now stand poised to create a film that we are all deeply invested in. They have brought us this far, your contributions will carry us over the finish line.
WHAT IS NEEDED?
Your funding will go towards:
- Props, wardrobe, and SFX. Since this a western film, much of the budget will be spent on these things. Since it's also a fantasy film, many of the costumes will need to be modified to fit the aesthetic.
- Food. Cast and crew need to eat!
- Cast. Great actors deserve to be paid!
- Film festival submission fees.
The money that you donate will directly influence what you see on screen in a few months' time.
