I have been watching my kids endlessly tie and re-tie their shoes. After talking with my wife Amy (a Kindergarten Teacher), watching all the families at soccer practice, and seeing how many runners were stopped on the side of the road tying their shoes at the Detroit half marathon, it was clear that I am not alone in my struggles!
A simpler way came to me while working on a new airbag solution at work. The project made me aware of the unique properties of the material we now use to make Grippy Laces. The extreme toughness of this material, combined with just enough stretch and slip-stick friction properties are the magic behind what make Grippy Laces possible.
After testing several different materials and processing techniques with our vendor, we created working prototypes and sent them out to our supporters. Utilizing all their great feedback, we then created the TriLobe design, which is even stronger than the original Grippy Laces design.
We will use the funds to make the production tool for the TriLobe design, order the raw materials, and produce the first batch of parts. Our vendor has already quoted the design and is ready to kick off the tool.
Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter project, so there is bound to be a learning curve during the launch. I have developed numerous Automotive and Consumer Products during my career as an Engineer and now Innovation Manager.
Based on this experience, I expect there to be some tweaking of the material and processing once we get parts in the new design. The results of our FEA analysis and experience creating the original design give us confidence we will be able to dial in the new design.
