About this project
Extended Goal: 11 000£!
We reached the base goal so fast! Thanks everyone!
The 7000£ was the minimum needed to finish the film's animation.
With this new extended goal I will be able to afford the film compositing and a proper recording for the film music/sound!
As a thank you, when we reach this new goal, I will organise a film projection for all the backers! (Here in London)
Falling asleep on the London underground, a man finds himself mysteriously spirited into the desert. He journeys through the desert, following the illusive trail of a failed love affair. Through the exploration of song writing, the man eventually reaches catharsis and the acceptance that allows him to move on, and to find his way out of the desert.
What is DeadMan's Reach:
I wrote the DeadMan's Reach script back in september 2011, and started saving money to produce the film. Last may I quit my job to start production. I thought 6 months would be enough, well it wasn't.
The film is totally animated by hand, on paper. Because it's around 10 minutes long, I had to find a fast way to animate, but without losing any artistic quality. I decided to go for a technique that would mix stop frame, rotoscopy and limited animation: I film video footage, then select only the frames I need, rotoscope those frames and then clean up and shade the animation. 12 frames (1 sec of animation) takes 30 minutes to rotoscope. The cleaning and shading takes between 15 and 45 minutes per frame...
Making of a shot:
I want the film to have a very personal feel, and that people would want to spend time looking at it, so I treated every background like a single illustration. Each background is drawn on an A3 bristol paper with black/red 0.3mm ink pen. They take between half a day and 3 days to draw/shade.
Shading a BackGround:
I'm 9 months into production now and I have finished drawing every background. I have animated 3 and a half minutes of film. I still need to shade most of the Background and finish animation. I then need to scan, clean and comp every drawing (which unfortunately will have to be done on computer).
This is why I started a kickstarter. I financed most of the film myself, and the equipment by selling the DeadMan's Reach sketch book on my website. But now I'm running out of time, and need to add several months of production. That's what the funds will go to!
Why Traditional animation?
I decided to make the whole film completely hand drawn, I spent the last years making CG film and I wanted to go back to a more expressive medium. My drawings are my get-away place. No screen, no key board, no undo. Fast results. Drawing is what made me start CG it was just natural to come back to it.
Here's a line test, just for fun:
What will I do with the Money?
Here's how I intend to use the funds raised:
- Finish the animation of Deadman's Reach
- Manufacturing cost for backers rewards (T-shirt, books, shipping) and Kickstarter fees
- Deal with post production costs like music rights and festival subscriptions.
- Compositing of the film.
- Recording Music and Sound
Note: For all the people that bought the sketch book prior to kickstarter, you can choose between getting another book, or get an exclusive signed screen print limited copies (a4). I will be making prints just for you! - Screen prints are amazing, they look just like originals and are a piece of art in itself!
An HD digital download of the film! Thanks for helping the film industry!
The film download will be a permalink, with no download limit. The film will be all nice and ready to go in iTune (ei in mp4 and nicely taged).
It will be downloadable in HD (1920x1080p) and SD (1024x576p).

Like this one:
You as an animated background character in the film. (You also get to receive the original animation drawings and a credit at the end of the film) + the £250 rewards
I will do my best to put you in the film but it could happen that the scene would be cut for creative reasons. I really hope not though!
Note that this reward will involve filming you. We can discuss what will be the best way to get the right footage. You don't need to come to London for this but you will need a camera if you don't.
Your Portrait on an A4 + the £250 rewards
Your name as Co - Executive Producer in the film credits + the £250 rewards
I'll probably throw in a bunch of extra stuff for this pledge.
Who am I? What do I do??
I have been working in CG animation for the last 5 years, as a render artist first and then as an Art Director. In my spare time I love to draw in sketch books and build stuff like a bull skull, a cigar box guitar, soft toys...
I studied at supinfocom where I directed my first CG animated short film and since then I was dying to direct another short film, and here we are.

Eager to know more about the film?
Good, because I've been keeping a week by week weblog of the short film's production, and it's right here: www.kweninlondon.com
Risks and challenges
The main risk is the amount of work needed to finish the project, animation is an extremely time consuming medium, a single second of animation can take weeks! You can get lost in never ending planning and improvements.
I worked on very challenging projects, professionally and personally. By being at the end of the pipeline I have learnt how to finish projects on time, what ever fate might throw at us. I also became extremely efficient, by focusing my time and energy on what matters the most.
I think I can easily transfer those skills to traditional animation and to DeadMan's Reach.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
