As your blood pools around you the light starts to fade, and you can hear the sound of a river flowing and people talking in whispers. An acrid smell fills the air, and everything goes black.
You died, you know you died, you can remember. So why is it that you have awoken in the hut of an old crone, in a village at the foot of a mountain, and why does the mountain call you?
So, begins From the Ashes and old school RPG set in the dark and sinister limbo of death. You will need to explore the world climb the mountain and face its many perils if you wish to finally die and enter the hall of heroes.
The game uses system mechanic based on great OSR titles like Knave by Ben Milton, Lamentations of the Flame Princess by James Raggi IV and Into the Odd by Chris McDowall. If you are familiar with OSR gaming, then this should feel very familiar.
The games has the usual classes Cleric, Fighter, Mage and Thief, Dwarf, Elf and Halfling, and the system is a D20 + bonus and beat a target number. But what is different? In from the Ashes that which is dead cannot die again, but instead returns to the hut of the old crone, lacking some soul but able to continue. This lack of soul will eventually damn you to purgatory so try not to die too often.
The Mountain is the route you must take to reach Valhalla, each level of the mountain has a gate that must be passed, and each gate is guarded. To reach the gate you must enter the mountain and that is where everything goes strange. Each level of the mountain is a world or a dungeon, a city or tower that must be conquered in order to reach the gate.
The Mountain has currently 5 levels, each level a unique adventure, with stretch goals we will increase the size of the mountain adding whole new levels.
Below the mountain is a village, this is where the characters will level up, buy gear and weapons, find exotic items and magical things to aid them in their journey. With stretch goals we will expand the village into a town, the area around the town will spread and maybe in the distance you will see a city and new places to explore.
We want to expand outward as well as upward.
£750 - Level 6 Appears - Unlocked
We will expand the mountain by a level adding a whole new adventure experience.
£1000 - The Village Grows - Unlocked
The village becomes a town, with new NPCs, Blacksmith, Thieves Guild and hidden places in the nearby forest.
£1,250 - Level 7 Appears - Locked
Another level pushes its way into the mountain.
£1,500 - A City Appears - Locked
From the town you can see a city in the distance, rivers, ruins and barrows mark the route. The city will expand upon the gear sections, add new guilds and create a hub for adventures not linked to the mountain.
Risks and challenges
The game has been in production for a while with a lot of the artwork already completed. The system is finished and the mountains levels need work hence the expected December release date (though I would expect it to be done well before December this just covers for illness and sod's law).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
