Basic Hovels and Humans. A Fantasy OSR Tabletop Game
A Fantasy OSR that replicates the games of the 70's but with a twist, you play the bad guys like Orcs, Goblins, Ogres and Trolls.
The thing about moving after adventurers rampage your home? There is not much left to pack.
That was one less stress in Glidd’s life, which was good because there were dozens more. He had just moved what was left of his family into this big new cave, his mate of five years was pregnant again, and the kids kept asking where their favourite uncle Klekk was. He just did not have him in him right now to explain what magic missiles were and why they were so unfair.
Wizards. Damn them all to the bottom-most folds of Drul-Gatha’s crusty arm pits!
Of course, none of that even began to approach the matter of Thagondexxal… daxxul… dakkus… five-more-syllables-and-they-could-be-anything and his residence in the big back cave with the open ceiling. Thaggy the Red, as Glidd never ever called the huge scaled beast to its face, certainly was not the easiest creature to live with. There was the snoring and occasional blasts of fire, not to mention the horrific smell of its digestion after a full knight’s meal. Still, it paid rent on time and kept to itself. The thing about having a dragon as a tenant?
Never haggle on the lease.
Hovels and Humans is a OSR game based very much on the Basic D&D of the 1970's; except for the fact that instead of playing intrepid adventurers, you play the victims of their search for gold and glory: the Goblins, Orcs, Trolls, Kobolds and Ogres.
The game is very much tongue in cheek and is ideal for a one shot adventure or a slightly longer adventure over a couple of days.
If we get funded we will be looking at releasing the adventures, and with the whole game being Creative Commons, you can also make adventures and upload them to DTRPG with our blessing.
The game is in every way an OSR game with a few tweaks and twists that we have thrown in to make it a bit different, such as an optional random character generator, a skill list, and changes to the professions to better fit the type of characters you will be making.
The rules also includes a whole host of encounter tables and spell variations that fit in better with an Ogre Mage or Goblin Shaman, and a random spell failure table (Goblins and Ogres don't get to spend years studying magic in fancy schools or towers).
The main book has everything you need to play, rules for character generation, how to play, encounter tables, spell lists and a bestiary... Yes a bestiary because even Goblins do not want to spend time with the undead and giant worms. Within the bestiary there will be tables to generate monsters and adventurers to put your tribe or clan against.
Each of the races will be fleshed out describing what they are really like and not that propaganda spread by Adventurers and Paladins. For example did you know that:
- Goblins are very family orientated, which is why they have such big caves.
- That Trolls are the true children of nature, a fact that Elves and Dwarves try to cover up.
- Orcs love to renovate old buildings, which is why they are always found in ruined towers.
These facts and so much more will become evident throughout the game.
The game is brought to you by the wandering band of singing Hobgoblins. This is their first RPG and will be published by FeralGamersInc.
The great artwork is done by Carl McIntyre who encountered the Hobgoblins in an old tavern and decided to help them realise their dream.
If we are funded the book will also contain a short story, which will continue the adventurers of Glidd and will be penned by the great August Hahn
Along with the Core book we will also be doing the first adventure module called 'Keep off the Borderlands'. The Adventure will put the characters against hordes of Adventurers, hired by a lord of a nearby Keep, who, for some reason, has taken offence to the harmless cult you rented your spare cave to.
We will be doing a few Stretch Goals if we manage to fund.
£2000 - We will add more art to the core book.
£3000 - We will add three extra races to the core book, Hobgoblins, Bugbears, and Gnolls.
£4000 - We will produce a small PDF of random caves, dungeons and ruins to be used in this or any fantasy RPG.
£5000 - We will produce a deck of random treasure and encounter cards that will be sent to all backers as a PDF and you will also receive a voucher to get the PoD from DTRPG.
Risks and challenges
This is our first RPG, but with the help of FeralGamersInc we are confident we have everything covered. Most of the rules and extra stuff is written, and the artist has done the majority of the artwork.
The time and money is mainly needed for the layout, paying for the artwork, proofreading and editing etc.
