About Strength of Wild Horses
Thus opens the first page of Strength of Wild Horses, a book about Amy, how she gets into trouble, and how she discovers that the very ideas which caused the trouble can also bring solutions. It is a book for every child (or adult) who needs to understand that being strong and creative can make the world a better place.
This picture book is fully illustrated by Angela Call and she does a wonderful job, as you can see:
The book will be hardback, 32 pages on high-quality paper, suitable for curling up with a child and reading. There will also be a pdf version of the book available.
Though there is another book about Amy, Strength of Wild Horses is written to stand on its own.
A Little History About Strength of Wild Horses
In 2006 my daughter had a particularly difficult kindergarten year. I realized she needed a story, so I wrote Hold on to Your Horses and began the adventure of getting the book illustrated and printed. In that process I met Amy, who dances through the pages of the book, and I met Angela who brought Amy to life using her amazing illustrations. It was exactly the story my daughter needed and helped her learn how to manage her impulsive ideas by picturing them as horses which could be steered. If you haven’t yet read Hold on to Your Horses, a free pdf of the entire book is available just click on the image.
Only weeks after putting that book into my child’s hands, she asked a very important question “What are wild idea horses good for?” Her question was simple but the implications were large. As an adult I can see enormous value in people who are strong-willed and full of ideas, but my daughter only saw how it made her life, and Amy’s life, difficult. I realized that the answer to that question had to be another book about Amy--a story where Amy could see that her ideas made the world a better place. I had to get it right. I didn’t want to slap together a sequel, it needed to be an excellent story. It needed to stand on its own. And it had to be fun.
Thus began my quest to write Strength of Wild Horses. It took me quite a while, but in January of this year I finally found the right words to tell Amy’s story. Angela agreed to bring this story to life, just as she did the first one. We set to work, and the book is very nearly complete.
The one thing blocking Strength of Wild Horses is paying for the print run and for shipping the book to Kickstarter backers. This is where we need your help.
Details about Pledge Levels
We’ve put together a list of pledge levels over there in the right hand column. For those who already love Amy and have Hold on to Your Horses, you can get your copy of Strength of Wild Horses. If you’re new to Amy’s adventures, you can pick up both books.
All pledges of $5 or more will get a pdf copy of Strength of Wild Horses. For pledge levels that include print books, there is a special Kickstarter exclusive signed bookplate.
We’ve also got greeting cards, original artwork, and prints.
You can get additional copies of the book by adding $10 to your pledge per copy of the book that you want. You can add personalization to your bookplate by increasing your pledge by $10. One personalization fee will personalize all of the bookplates in your pledge. (One bookplate per copy of Strength of Wild Horses purchased)
We also have two original pieces of artwork from Strength of Wild Horses available as pledge levels. The originals vary in size, but they all feature Angela's beautiful pencil work. I was amazed when I first saw these. The colors glow on the pages. There is no substitute for original artwork and you can get these at a special Kickstarter price.
As a special bonus, we also have two images from Hold on to Your Horses available as pledge levels.

Stretch #1 More desktop wallpapers
If the project reaches $10,000 then we'll add 9 more desktop wallpapers that will be available free to all backers. We already gave the current backers one desktop image.
It was our way of thanking everyone for helping us fund. We'll be happy to make 9 more. This means a total of 10 pretty pictures for your computer. If we reach this stretch goal, the desktops will be available to all backers at every pledge level.
Stretch #2 Posters
If the project reaches $12,000 then everyone who has pledged $50 or more (at any pledge level) will also get a free poster. This poster will be of the new cover art that Angela is creating right now. We will post an image as soon as one is available.
Perhaps more important than reaching specific financial goals, is to take these last few days to spread the word as far as possible. There are people out there who have yet to meet Amy and who would love her. I don't want anyone to miss out on the Kickstarter exclusives, or miss the chance to be part of making Strength of Wild Horses a reality.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I've been publishing books for seven years now. The process of printing is familiar. There is always a chance of printing snafus or delays, but we're working with a tried and true printer, one we've worked with before. We will deliver your books.
The art is complete. We can send files to print as soon as the project funding closes and we have money in our hands to pay the printing costs. $5000 of the money will go directly to those costs and will pay for a print run of 2000 books. This will allow us to make books available via bookstores and conventions. The remaining $3000 will cover Kickstarter fees, shipping supplies, paying shipping helpers, and the costs of postage to mail all of the rewards to our Kickstarter backers. I've paid Angela an advance for her artwork out of pocket. I will only get paid for my time when I sell enough copies of the book.
I am very familiar with the complexities of managing fulfillment on a Kickstarter. With many pledge levels and rewards it can be quite complex, but I've done it before for other people's projects. I'm excited that I might get to do it for a project of my own.
I hope you'll join me for Amy's next adventure. This is going to be fun.
Absolutely. I'll include a field on the backer surveys where you can indicate that this is what you would like to do and where you would like the books to be sent.
Sadly, no. The project will close December 5th and we won't get the funds until two weeks after that. As soon as we have the funds, we'll pay for the print run, but turn around is three months. We'll be sending your book to you in March. The PDF copies will be sent out sooner, but between closing a Kickstarter, sending the book off to print, and all my usual holiday chaos, I can't guarantee the PDF by Christmas either.
