Make learning fun as we follow Coco on an unexpected adventure far from home to meet exotic, strange and new friends around the world.
Why This Project?
Coco the Bird's Awesome Adventure is actually an idea that my 7 year old daughter Madison, who is obsessed with birds and who will co-author the book, came up with. I can't actually take the credit! This fun and educational story will follow Coco the parakeet on her travels around the world as she tries to find her way back home to her family and friends in Australia. Along the way, she meets and learns about new, exotic and strange bird friends who help her to realize there are other feathered friends outside her flock who look and act very different than she does.
There are various levels you can pledge and various 'rewards' linked to these pledges. These include things like signed books, illustration prints, original/signed illustrations, black diamond bird pendants, acknowledgements in the book, cover and/or website, donations to schools/libraries in your honor...check out the right hand side of this screen to see all reward levels for supporting this project.
The simple answer to this is that for my first book, High-Risk Pregnancy- Why Me?, I found a love of writing to help others and now I want to explore writing to teach others...kids in this case. Unfortunately, I spent my retirement money and maxed out my credit cards to start Evolve Publishing and to complete my first book earlier this year. (FYI: This is a side job/hobby. I work full time in good ol' corporate America, so I'm not trying to use Kickstarter to pay my bills.)
That title has gotten rave reviews from big outlets such as Library Journal, Foreword Reviews and numerous physicians and charities. If there is one thing that those of you in the publishing/writing industries understand, it is that selling tons of books is NOT easy. Spreading the word takes time and I'm just starting to see the fruits of my labor come in as sales of that title.
So, why kickstarter? Because I don't have the capital available to fund this project on my own. I have the experience, the team, drive, enthusiasm, and know-how to publish this book and I will make it happen...I can promise you that! I have an awesome team of designers, illustrators, editors, typesetters and consultants to help me produce a top notch children's book.
The key to a good children's picture story book is the illustrations. As you can see, great illustrations/illustrator is a priority for me.The illustrations in Coco are vibrant, detailed to capture true bird and habitat features, yet whimsical to make it truly eye-grabbing for the youngsters, and beautifully detailed. (They will be available as both prints and originals to those who support this project!)
Any money raised over our goal will go towards increased marketing efforts and other titles in the series, which will follow various species of animals as they meet and learn about other animals on their journeys. I can only hope to raise enough funds to realize that others also think this project is worthy...
Our Illustrator- Diana McManus-Whitman
Coco at Home in Her Native Land of Australia
Note: More illustrations from the book are coming soon... crashing computer troubles have set her back a bit.
Diana is not only an incredibly kind and easy person to work with, she is also a very experienced artist and children's book illustrator. She specializes in wildlife, children's designs, figurative and fantasy. After checking out dozens of portfolios and getting sketches from several illustrators, we decided she was the best fit for what we had in mind. (Animals mixed with fantasy, with a kid's edge...perfect for what we want!)

Where Does the Money Go?
Your money will go towards the printing costs. (The book will be hardbound with high quality paper sturdy enough to stand up to grubby and rough little fingers.) Without your support, I'm not sure I can get this project off the ground. (Sorry- pulled the pity card there for a sec. ;)
What will I be paying for? Believe it or not, putting out a kid's book, or any quality book for that matter, is far from inexpensive. Even if I raise $10,000, there will be several thousands more needed to cover items such as the illustrator costs, editing, typesetter/interior design layout costs, proofing fees, as well as the biggest one of all...promotion/publicity associated costs. A comprehensive program is needed to let those in the trade, as it's called in the publishing world, know about the book. These include things like press releases, website design, publicist costs, book show representation, library and school mailings, galley program costs...the list is endless.
If you have a specific question about this project before you pledge, or if you're waivering...feel free to contact me via email at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions or concerns. If you know of others in your network or a corporate sponsor who may be interested in pledging this project, I beg you to forward it along.
Thanks in advance for any and all support!!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
In my experience, the greatest challenge, aside from the complexity of managing timelines, the team, and budget when publishing a book, is actually getting your title out there so the 'right' people know about it and want to buy it. There are so many routes to announcing your title to the industry, that this can be very overwhelming. My goal with this project is to rely heavily on the library and school opportunities to get the word out and obtain sales. Though the retail sector such as Barnes and Noble is important, this will not be my main focus based on their notoriously high return rates. I will seek distribution arrangements with the large box retailers like Target and Walmart. (But there is no guarentee that we will get picked up/approved by their distributors.)
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
