About this project
Before Stonewall !
Before The Rainbow Flag!
Before Gay Pride Parades!
The infamous "Raid on California Hall" happened and very few people know the story!
This film is the first hand account of that frosty night in 1965 when the San Francisco Police Department illegally raided a private Masquerade Ball being held by straight ministers and "homophile" (yes, that is what they were called back then) organizations who simply wanted to share a festive evening together.
The news of the lawsuit that the unified Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopal and Jewish ministers brought against the SFPD as a result of this shady scheme spread across the new wires like wild fire. Ironically, this news furthered the migration of LGBT folk from all over the nation who now wanted to live in SF thus contributing to the fabulous gay mecca that San Francisco is today which inspired the boldness for other "gayborhoods" to spring up in the nation! What was meant to convey a disgusting reality, contributed to the fabulous gay mecca that San Francisco is today and inspired the boldness for other "gayborhoods" to spring up in the nation!
Wonderfully iconic LGBT heroes and activists were in attendance at this would be ball turned raid!
Most people don't know that this unknown event helped to shape the influential lives of the likes of power lesbian couple: Del Martian and Phyllis Lyon, as well as Herb Donaldson, the first openly gay municipal judge appointed in the United States, along with the reverend Ted McLlvenna and his wife Winnie who both later started the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. Many of these new year's day party-goers went on to become some of the most influential people in San Francisco politics and LGBT activism!
This is important work and this film is a crucial part of shedding light on our hidden history. All told 50 years later by those who were there and how it impacted their lives and the law forever.
Thanks to your generous support, we can bring forth continued change by educating people about where we have come from in our struggle against gay bashing, police brutality, human rights, and equality for LGBT individuals since this historic 1965 event illuminated in Lewd & Lascivious.
With the recent ruling of the Supreme Court in regards to gay marriage and DOMA, the timing could not be more perfect to get this potent piece of gay history and the struggle for equality in front of the public! We are grateful for your belief in us and your support to see this dream become a reality!
We need $18,0000 to finish the project and pay for all of the archive film footage, copy right permissions, music licensing and to seek global distribution.
(We hope to land on HBO, PBS, LOGOS or BRAVO very soon!!)
Please give generously NOW as the clock it ticking down to our July 25th deadline!
Warmly with massive gratitude:

Risks and challenges
Our current challenge is to renegotiate 3 contracts. Currently these contracts are short term and only allow for a festival screening. We are in the middle of negotiations to have long-term contracts that will allow us to distribute this film nationally and internationally. The 3 contracts are for: Vintage Footage B roll, Vintage photographs, and copyrights for music. We hope to have these contracts signed in July and August.
For our backers and supporters, we will report our success, progress and any hiccups we may encounter on ComeTrueProduction’s website.
We are dependent on your financial success. We consider you as our partner and will keep you informed on our progress. Your generous support can help make that happen.
