Allow me to get the “why Kickstarter” question out of the way. It is the obvious consideration of capital. I independently published my first book, "On a Sphere’s Edge" by scrimping, saving, and relying on Christmas gifts of cash. The publication was small with very few supportive bells or whistles, but it was my first book after all.
"The Curmudgeon Code" is a much larger and deeper work, and a noteworthy one if you ask me. I would like to publish it on a much larger scale, not just a simple barebones paperback. To publish it in both hardbound and paperback, with more professional quality ebooks, and with wider distribution options, such as First Year Returns, making the book more appealing to retail outlets.
That requires capital. I am not asking for a lot as compared with many of the publishing projects I have seen. All I require are the publishing costs. The work is already complete. It was written with love on my own time with my own dime. The same is true for the audio book, which will be released alongside the print copy. That was also done out of love and at my expense.
I am asking you to pre-order your copy by making a Kickstarter donation, and thus helping me to get this wonderful work out into the world. It is much like giving birth – a laborious and difficult struggle, but what a beautiful outcome it will be.
About the novel:
The work is a speculative fiction, rife with allegory. It grew out of musings over the things we use our computers and smartphones for, especially in regards to business, and the knowledge that someday Artificial Intelligence – the offspring of that technology – will come into being. This coupled with classical curiosities about the human condition, consciousness, and who we are, gave rise to "The Curmudgeon Code".
The story is layered. Passages about the main character, Joshua, are intercut with chapters discussing our real-world history, explaining how his world came to be. The story uses art, drawing and music, as metaphor and allegory. Joshua learns to draw on a virtual system. Drawing techniques give him clues and tools to understand his world.
The cover art is based on the last drawing Joshua creates using the virtual systems provided by the Artificial Intelligence Collective – the “Artificials”. Eventually he abandons the virtual system, wanting to explore a more human quality by using plain paper and pencils. Here is a clip from the audio book covering some passages describing Joshua’s last virtual drawing, which I should note plays a key role in the overall story…
The work explores companionship and love, life and death. In Joshua’s time, a process called “Reconstruction” – the moving or copying of one’s consciousness into an AI – allows people to avoid death. All memories, mental patterns, feelings, gut reactions and instincts can be preserved for all time. René Descartes penned, “Je pense, donc je suis”, later translated to Latin as “Cogito ergo sum”, or in English, “I think, therefore I am”. If your thoughts and consciousness are your soul, could your soul be moved into a machine to live forever? Would it really be you?
Joshua experiences close friends who die, refusing Reconstruction, and close family who elect the process. The ideas conflict in him as he wrestles with the deep questions of who we are and what makes you, you.
I believe it is a well written, well edited work. Granted, I am the author. What author would not say that of their own work? However, even authors recognize their poor works from their good ones. This is an excellent work.
On reading an early manuscript, US Air Force Pilot Chris Ashby writes -
"I thought you did a great job writing and editing it!
It was a very interesting look at the future, for sure! I certainly started drawing the same conclusions as Joshua (ed. main character) as I read – where is the motivation to evolve, and what serves as a driving force to create if everything is just created and handed to you? Where is the pride of authorship if someone (or something) actually guided your hand through most of it?
It made me think! Well done!”
What if the Kickstarter Goal is exceeded?
Outskirts Press offers a host of add-ons to the publishing process that help build, support, and advertise a book; a virtual book tour, guaranteed radio interviews, Amazon Listing Optimization, a Goodreads marketing campaign and a host of other considerations, and always advertising and marketing are an important need.
Instead of Donating - Pre-Order!
Well, donation is virtually a pre-order. My turnaround time should be short - possibly by the Holidays.
One way or another "The Curmudgeon Code" will be published. It would be better to publish it large and with support - and you would be one of the first to have a copy! Donate $25.00 or more and you get a signed copy. So donate - ah - Pre-Order! Don't wait to buy it off the shelf.

Risks and challenges
The unique aspect of this project is that the work, other than the publishing / printing itself, is already complete. The story is written and has been carefully edited and proofread. The audio book, part of the editing process, is complete - recorded and edited, with sound effects and music. All rights are firm. Images used are my own creation. Sound effects and music used in the audio book are either my own creations or were purchased royalty-free from Pond5.
I have previously independently published with Outskirts Press, so I am familiar with their process and turnaround times.
The only potential hazards I see are a hold up with Outskirts Press, or a delay in delivery (to me) due to the holiday rush that will take place during this process. In the event this should happen, I am prepared to deliver some stop-gap - a PDF copy of the manuscript or something in that nature to fill the void between the estimated award time and its actual delivery date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
