About

Football has an extraordinary power to bring people together, even in the most challenging times. We need you to help us harness that power, to Kick Off an ambitious new social practice artwork by British artist duo Yara + Davina, in partnership with the National Trust

What is Kick Off?

Kick Off will explore craft and collectivism in women’s football, with a focus on feminism and equality within sports and how that can influence the wider world. The project will explore the history of women’s football as a feminist act and ask questions about the role it plays now in influencing equality beyond gender.

Women's football fact: On 5 December 1921, the FA moved to ban its members from allowing women's football to be played at their grounds. It wasn't untill 1971 that the FA lifted their ban after pressure from The Women’s Football Association, which was founded in 1969 and the governing body of European football, UEFA.

Who is Kick Off for and what will happen?

Based at two National Trust sites (Souter Lighthouse and the Leas, Sunderland and Osterley House and Park, London) we will work with two local young female football teams (age 14-16) and a group of older local women, over a period of 20 weeks.

Through weekly workshops the women and girls will co-create their teams’ visual and aural language, drawing on their passions and the things they stand for. Together working with two poets Kate Fox and Bridget Minamore, a chef, two textile designers and a quilt-maker we’ll design the teams’ scarves, we’ll write crowd chants (a form of empowering spoken word!), we’ll create a new football and even invent a new regional pie, all with the help of local expert creatives.

After the weekly sessions we will host two Home and Away matches, bringing together the north and south in a celebration of unity. Players, participants, fans, family, friends and the wider public will be invited to attend the matches and wave their scarves, shout their chants and share their pies, all while enjoying 90 minutes of the beautiful game. You can be part of this epic celebration too, by supporting this Kickstarter campaign.

The project will culminate with an exhibition across both locations, where visitors can explore the history and inspiration behind the project and play their own games on a specially designed table football of the teams we work with.

What do we mean by ‘social practice artwork’?

Our projects involve people as active participants; we challenge the role and function of art in society by creating works that have a meaningful impact on those participating. We make artworks that are fun, playful and that help people see each other, themselves and the world in a new way.

Where did this project come from?

The National Trust site of Souter Lighthouse and the Leas has historical connections to female football. The local town of South Shields has a strong women’s football team and had one also at the start of the twentieth century, which pulled in crowds of over 10,000 even before World War One. Many of the players lived in Marsden; the local village to the lighthouse.

"Football has been hand in hand with women's struggle for equality for hundreds of years. How women's teams used it to further their suffrage cause in the 1800-1900s and how even now, space and platforming for women's football highlights how women still face so many barriers and challenges in modern society.”
     Playwright Sabriana Mahfouz

Whilst Souter Lighthouse has connection to women’s football Osterley Park and House has a strong connection to contemporary art. The 9th Earl of Jersey was a keen art collector and organised a series of art exhibitions by living artists and sculptors which were held in the top-floor rooms of Osterley House. In 1949, the Earl of Jersey gave his parkland to the National Trust, under the terms that it would always remain free for the public to access. This parkland will host a number of football games in summer 2020

Community is at the heart of both football and social practice art, and looking at historical and contemporary issues, such as gender equality in sport (which we’re still fighting for) and female empowerment, reveals a shared language to explore football, craft and collectivism.

Why the National Trust?

We’re working with the National Trust to connect with the history of Souter Lighthouse and the Leas and Osterley Park and House and to reach people who might not have taken part in a project like this before. The National Trust is contributing some funds to the project and is providing the space we need to run workshops and host the matches.

Why do we need Kick Off now?

Even though we’re on the right path, the statistics for women and children engaged in sports is dire and there’s still a way to go in the fight for equality in sports. Only 8% of girls get the recommended exercise they need and just last year Ada Hegerberg, the first female footballer to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, was asked by a presenter if she “knew how to twerk”. Do you think Pelé got interviewed about his dance moves…?

Drawing inspiration from the Lionesses’ World Cup success and using football as a familiar entry point, Kick Off will engage with wider issues of equality, inclusivity and health. By joining our Kickstarter community you can help us have these important conversations and enact social change on a local and national level.

How can Kickstarter help?

Social art projects can often be hard to fund. Kick Off is all about collective action and we hope that Kickstarter (one of the world’s most powerful collaborative platforms) will help us reach a supportive community and get the project on track towards its goal. Your contribution will make it possible for our local groups to work with experienced creative experts (two poets, a chef, a textile designer and a quiltmaker) over a sustained period of time, to develop a collection of beautiful art objects. Depending on your pledge you will receive your own limited edition commemorative artwork.

This project is part of a Kickstarter initiative supporting social practice artists in the UK. Discover other projects supported from our collaboration with Social Art Network: https://www.kickstarter.com/social-art-network

Risks and challenges

Risk: Nobody will attend the matches or buy the scarves.

Plan: We will work with partners across the arts sector and football/sports community to establish relationships. We are working with the National Football Museum and local grassroots teams and to develop meaningful long-term connections. A robust Social Media and PR campaign will help us raise awareness of the project and we expect that the scarves will be desirable enough so that people will want to buy them.

Risk: The bond between the local women’s groups and the young female footballers might be difficult to develop.

Plan: We will facilitate these sessions so all those involved can create a common ground and find a shared vision. We have nearly 20 years experience in working with communities in an art context and are very mindful of how we help shape outcomes.

Risk: Participants will drop out before the end of the project.

Plan: We will be flexible to each individual’s needs and support them to attend as much of the project as they can. We have worked with communities for nearly 20 years and in this time have effectively developed ways of working that encourage long-term participation and creative a supportive and enjoyable environment.
