About this project
Collective Awareness To Unexploded Ordnance (CAT-UXO) aims to bring together the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), humanitarian mine action (HMA) and hostile environment (HE) communities in order to collate information and awareness on Un-exploded Ordnance (UXO) and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW). Each month over 300 people throughout the world are killed or injured by explosive hazards left behind after conflict. By collating this knowledge via technical personnel and redistributing it on a simple and easy to understand medium, non-technical personnel may be better prepared in preventing further injuries and death from various UXO and ERW. CAT-UXOs first product was the development of a Landmine Awareness application for the iPhone. The second product was the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Awareness application. This forms the “Collective Awareness To” brand of iPhone applications providing easy to understand explosive hazard awareness. Collectively the apps have been downloaded by over 3000 users in over 52 countries worldwide and today are being used to reduce injury from post conflict UXO. Along with these apps CAT-UXO provides a social media presence on Facebook further providing an awareness and discussion platform for friends and members of CAT-UXO.
CAT-UXO now wants to consolidate the technology and data received from these apps into a single portal for the general public and EOD technicians to access relevant and up to date ERW data. CAT-UXO wants to develop the first publically available CAT-UXO ERW Data-Base available initially on the tablet platforms (iPad) and then onto the internet.
Risks and challenges
1. As data and images are added to the app the downloaded data to your individual tablet may get excessive. A setting function will allow you to hold either all data or limited data only. On connection to a wifi additional data will be available and cached as required.
2. Non-technical individuals may want to gain access to RSP information and use it for surreptitious purposes. A request for full membership will require vetting and proof of professional qualifications. Submitted RSPs and technical data will also be vetted before being added to the app.
3. Concerns to liability will be raised as CAT-UXO is providing Render Safe Procedures. If individual technicians use the suggested RSPs and have an accident they may consider making an injury claim against CAT-UXO. On making an application for membership a clear disclaimer by users will have to be agreed to. RSPs are supplied to individuals as a suggested means of disposing an item, to be used at their own risk.
4. Data is the most valued commodity in this project. Loss by theft, fire or damage is a real risk. Suitable IT backup systems and hardware protection systems will be used in the development and storage of the project data.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes the app will be released on Apple iOS, Android and Windows initially. The iPad on the KickStarter project is just for display purposes at the moment. In addition the data will be available via the web so anyone with an internet connection will be able to access the site.
