"The Sgt. Pepper's of comedy music" - Dr. Demento
Thank you so much, everyone who contributed! Since this release is MOST DEFINITELY HAPPENING, you can still pre-order Goodbye My 4-Track at www.needlejuicerecords.com
STRETCH GOAL: $14,000 - The Mini-Album of Luv on Vinyl & Tape
If we can make it to $14,000 (that's $4,000 on top of our initial goal), we will press an extremely limited run of the companion EP, The Mini-Album of Luv on both vinyl and cassette tape.
If the stretch goal is met:
- EVERY REWARD TIER will receive a copy of The Mini-Album of Luv on cassette as a token of our appreciation.
- ANY REWARD TIERS that include the vinyl LP of Goodbye, My 4-Track will receive a vinyl copy of The Mini-Album of Luv as well. This applies to the $100, $250, and $400 bundle rewards as well as the regular "LP" reward tier, or any reward tiers such as "LP + CD," etc.
- THE TEST PRESSING BUNDLE will also include a vinyl test pressing of The Mini-Album of Luv.
Hi, we're Needlejuice Records an independent record label. We started late last year as a project between two musicians-- Austin Ash Lemon and Jace McLain . As you can tell by the name, we fancy ourselves to be rather humorous fellows. We found each other through this underground community of similarly humorous songwriters. We found common influence in artists like Weird Al and They Might Be Giants. A major figure in this community was the iconic purveyor of radio buffoonery: Mr. Barry Hansen, or Dr. Demento. Through his show, we discovered Logan Whitehurst. Years later, Logan's music became our inspiration for starting this record label.
Logan was a songwriting, graphic designing, multi-instrument beholding wizard of the light-heartedly absurd. He was known as the drummer for bands like Little Tin Frog and The Velvet Teen, but it was his original work that struck a chord with us (watch out comedy professionals over here). His music was an ever-changing stew of genre, his lyrics could be silly and hilarious on one track then poignant and beautiful on the next.
In December 2006, Logan passed away from brain cancer at 29. We, along with the entire online comedy music community, were devastated. In the years since, we’ve covered his songs, mimicked his unquestionably unique style, and even named a comedy award after him, all the while cherishing the work he left behind.
Though Logan released many albums in his lifetime, few held together as a concise piece of art quite like 2003’s Goodbye, My 4-Track. The 21-track masterpiece deftly portrayed the full breadth of Logan’s talent. Dr. Demento has even referred to it as the “Sgt. Pepper’s of comedy music”.
The album has been a favorite of ours these past 12 years. Going back to it elicits the same feeling of wonderment it had upon first listen. Late last year, we realized that it never was given a proper LP release. It deserves it, and what’s more, we just want to have it to spin on our turntables.
And so, with the support and assistance of Logan’s family and friends, Needlejuice will be re-issuing the album on vinyl LP, CD, and cassette. It’s an honor and privilege to be able to put this out. This $10,000 we're asking for is strictly to cover the production costs. Logan's family gets 50% of all profit made after those costs.
We aim to make this the best possible package across all three formats. To do that, we need your help. We're looking to raise $10,000 over the next 30 days to fund the pressing of those three formats, as well as a vinyl re-master from the original CD audio. In addition to the album proper, doing this Kickstarter also allows us to provide some exclusive rewards.
Note: ALL reward tiers will include a digital download of Goodbye, My 4-Track.
The rewards have been set up so that backers can get basically any combination of these items they want. Every reward also includes a digital download of the album. Here's what you can get your tiny, malnourished hands on via this crowd-funding endeavor:
The vinyl LP will be available on "Lizard Green & Fish Orange" 180-gram colored vinyl with full-color gatefold sleeve and lyric inserts. It will also include a retrospective forward by Dr. Demento.
The CD will be pressed via glass replication in a 4-panel Digipak case with a 12-page booklet emulating the album's original 2003 release.
The cassette will be pressed on a green shell with a full-color multi-panel J-card incorporating art from the original CD booklet, and will be equipped with Dolby noise reduction.
As a special reward, Logan's family has provided a box of rare promo posters from the original release.
Dr. Demento has given us a very limited amount of the long-out-of-print Basement Tapes compilations that feature songs by Logan.
Finally, we're pressing an incredibly limited CD run of The Mini-Album of Luv, Goodbye, My 4-Track's original companion disc. If we make it to our stretch goal of $14,000, every reward tier will include a copy of the EP on cassette, and all tiers with 4-Track vinyl LP will receive The Mini Album of Luv on vinyl!
All CD copies will feature hand-stamped artwork and will be individually numbered.
Risks and challenges
We've been planning this campaign for a year, so the preliminary work is essentially finished. The artwork and audio for these releases are basically taken care of. We have lots of experience making physical media, working with pressing plants and shipping the products, and we don't anticipate any setbacks as long as we reach our goal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
