About

World’s First Portable Recording Studio For Smartphones/Tablets

The current options for recording music are inconvenient, expensive, and stationary.

The Studio Stick is the solution to all of these problems.

The Studio Stick is the world’s first portable recording studio for smartphones and tablets. This is perfect for musicians, podcasters, book recorders, teachers, or anyone with a voice who wants to BE HEARD. It’s a small, 20-inch container that opens and expands to your height. Once opened and expanded, it reveals a microphone, pop filter, mic stand, reflective filter, and phone holder, allowing the artist to record high quality songs or audio anywhere. Just connect to phone, start app, and enjoy :)

Reflective Filter - A reflection filter is designed to absorb some of the sound that would hit the rear of the mic. It also prevents echoes from bouncing around walls of rooms. The filter is the sound absorbing foam on the inside of the Studio Stick that lines the wall.

Microphone - The Studio Stick encompasses a cardioid microphone that is designed to mainly capture sound that comes in from directly in front of the microphone. It is a directional microphone with a pattern of sensitivity of this shape. This prevents most of the sounds coming from behind you or behind the microphone from interfering with the audio that you record.

Pop Filter - The pop filter prevents sounds called “plosives” when recording into the microphone. Plosives are the popping and hissing noises that occur when speaking directly into the microphone.

Mic Stand - Inside the Studio Stick is a mic stand that is only 20 inches when collapsed, but opens and expands up to 6 feet, accommodating any artist’s height.

Phone Holder – The phone holder is universal and fits a majority of smartphones and tablets from both major iOS systems.

The Studio Stick mobile application is to be used in conjunction with the Studio Stick hardware. This application allows the user to record, mix, and master songs just like they were in a traditional recording studio. The only difference is, this is on the go!

Purchase Beats – The artist will be able to purchase beats from other users on the application platform. This will give users the ability to make money, buy beats, purchase beats, and network all in one app.

Record – The artist will be able to record multi-track songs, just like they would in a traditional recording studio. This gives them the ability to overdub, adlib, and add extra vocals in the background.

Effects – The artist can add effects to their vocals, such as reverb, chorus, echo, and others that will give them professional, crisp recording studio quality.

Mix – Not only can the artist record, they can also complete their song fully, by mixing it down on a smartphone. Functionality here includes raising volume, slowing tempos, changing tones, cutting, slicing, copying, fading, etc. Once artists are finished recording, they can then export their full song into a mp3 track, and share it on any social media platform, or send it via email.

Profile/Social Community - The artist will be allowed to have their own profiles, which display their songs and bio. This will give artists the chance to check out and follow other users, message them for collaborations, share/like music, or even give and receive feedback.

Distribute – Once fully finished with their songs, the artist can distribute them to major online retailers such as iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, etc. all through our mobile application. It’s truly an all-in-one artist’s database!

Development - We are currently working with N-Track Studio with our app development. N-Track is a professional recording app company who is working with us to create our Studio Stick app, one of the best interactive/social recording app that is yet to exist.

Problems

Most current traditional recording equipment is stationary/cumbersome to travel with.

Most current options for professional recording studio require you to set up all of your equipment in a stationary location. Once set up, it is difficult to disassemble. Traveling with your studio will be limited due to the process of the difficult disassembly, and trying to fit it all in your vehicle.

Studio time can be very expensive.

With some professional studios costing hundreds of dollars per hour, and even simple house basement studios costing about $50 per hour, professional recording studios are very expensive.

Setting up recording time can be very inconvenient.

No one wants to wait longer than 1 week to go to a studio and capture their creative ideas through recording, but some recording studios are booked for months in advance. It’s a hassle for anyone eager to make progress.

Solution to all of your problems: Studio Stick

The Studio Stick allows artists, which includes but not limited to musicians, podcasters, lecturers, book recorders, etc., to be able to record their songs/ideas at the moment they’re inspired while giving them a full mobile recording studio experience. With one small upfront cost for the Studio Stick, the artist can then record high quality audio whenever they want, and wherever they want.

Great creations begin with a flash of inspiration and an idea. Brandyn Armstrong has been putting his creative sparks to good use for over a decade in his own neighborhood nurturing the grass roots music scene. Now he is branching out with a product that is poised to benefit creativity wherever it may strike.

Armstrong writes his invention ideas in a small notebook as soon as he thinks of them, and his latest brainchild is designed with that same on-the-go inspiration in mind. After spending his formative years entertaining his community, the now 25-year-old has channeled that love of music, drive and ingenuity into a product that anyone can use to create their own recordings.

Armstrong's creation transforms smart phones into portable recording studios, allowing artists to record vocals wherever they may be. Weighing 10 pounds, Studio Stick is 20-inch tube that expands up to six feet. It includes a reflective filter to prevent sound from bouncing around, a microphone that enhances recording quality, a filter that prevents popping noises in the recording, and a phone/tablet holder. Per Armstrong, Studio Stick produces studio-quality sound unlike other apps that only use the phone’s microphone and produce inferior recordings.

“It’s the first product that allows you to record industry-ready songs while on the go,” he adds.

Targeting independent recording artists, the product eliminates the costs associated with studio rental and production. The included Studio Stick app, which Armstrong keeps updated, allows users to change frequency, add effects, multi-track, copy, paste, mix, master, and perform any of the functions of finishing a track in a professional studio. It works with Samsung and iOS operating systems on cell phones or tablets and comes with tutorial videos.

Armstrong has received an overwhelmingly positive response from prospective users. His team is currently preparing to launch Studio Stick online, in music stores, and in retail stores. He is also negotiating for possible future collaborations with other major applications.

The rosy future of Armstrong's Studio Stick venture is a departure from difficult episodes in his past.

Armstrong’s father was killed when he was four years old, after which his grandmother took him into her East Cleveland home. He bounced from house to house after she went blind when he was 10. A musician since the age of five, Armstrong began recording music at age 13 with a group of friends who called themselves T.Y.S. A couple years later, he began a record label called 9 Front Entertainment. However, the death of one of the T.Y.S members sent those ventures into a tailspin. Armstrong began to get in trouble in high school. His grades began to fall, and eventually he was kicked out. However, he credits those tough experiences with making him the businessman he is today.

I knew that if I didn't get my head back on the right track, I would end up either dead or in jail,” says Armstrong. “And I wanted neither of those. I knew something had to change so that's when I decided to check out Tri-C,” which is where he earned his G.E.D.

Now with associate degrees in both business administration and arts, Armstrong is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Cleveland State University (CSU)

Although he initially had no idea how to bring his Studio Stick idea to fruition, as luck would have it, he learned of CSU’s annual business competition StartUp Vikes. Not only did he win $1,500 at the April 2015 event, but he also met two engineers who would come to join his team, Ron Brengartner and Thomas Hayes. After exhaustive research, he wrote his own patent for the product (to save money) and used his prize money to obtain the patent, trademark, and other business essentials.

“It is truly a unique invention that came from a real need,” notes president of American Rail Corporation and 2015 StartUp Vikes judge Ameer Alghusain. He adds that Armstrong’s business does not require a significant amount of start-up funding and that the young inventor created an exciting product on a tight budget using affordable equipment. It will also have a positive social impact, especially on young artists and performers.

With dedication, hard work and a good management team, says Alghusain, “I think it has the potential to grow into real viable business.”

Armstrong is confident that it will, but he does not plan to stop there.

I plan to continue making many more products to help musicians all around the world,” he says. “With more and more people wanting to make music, I believe a majority of the people throughout the world would appreciate these steps to revolutionize the music industry as a whole. I also plan on creating a new record label in the future so that I can leave a print in the world with actual music.

Risks and challenges

Studio Stick is nearly complete. All Studio Sticks shown on this page and in the videos were built on our production line. We’re currently ramping up and are ready to meet the estimated delivery times.

With a successful crowdfunding of Studio Stick on Kickstarter, we are confident that we can get support across the globe if we continue to make great stuff. That’s why we are launching the Studio Stick on Kickstarter. We want to prove that a tiny portable unit can give close to the same results as a full traditional recording studio. Since this is our first time making a product, we faced lots of challenges, such as molding, user experience, battery consumption, and acoustic tuning.

Our team worked around the clock in the past few months. Finally, we have overcome all of the problems, hence our Kickstarter campaign, and mass production soon!

Forecasting Risk
We’ve done our very best to forecast demand and create a solid production plan. We’ve learned a lot from the past three years, but sometimes forecasts don’t always hit the mark. Should we miss projections, we’ll let you know why and make it right as quickly as possible.

Supply Chain Risk
We’ve built a very capable team who have worked for the past three years on all our products. However, component delays and unexpected shortages can occur. If this happens, we’ll be sure to keep you informed and work to quickly solve the problem.
