In 2015, after a long spell of unemployment, my wife and I hit on the idea of a dedicated RPG online shop selling our wooden wares—including dice boxes, DM screens, and much more. As an avid player myself, I knew how difficult it was to find different products. And with a carpentry background I guess it was inevitable my two passions would combine.
The enthusiasm and love that people had for my products only acted as an incentive to source or manufacture more ideas. My wife’s educational background is in animal science and welfare, so in the same way that gaming and carpentry had collided for me…her loves collided to inspire the launch of our original Critit ‘Spirit Of’ dice line, the Kickstarter campaign that started us on this path.
But we couldn’t stop there…wanting to bring more of our creativity to all the awesome gamers out there, we hit upon the idea of the animal companion miniatures line when a good friend asked for help making a specialized cheetah miniature for a gaming session. We decided we needed to produce a whole line of miniatures which were totally dedicated to our beloved companions and familiars, and to make them purposefully for use in RPG gaming.
Ok…..so we had this idea over 2 years ago. “What took you so long?” I hear you cry….well…………
Putting together a range of miniatures is a WHOLE different ball game to dice, and as novices in this field, we don’t mind admitting we made a lot of mistakes!
In our head it seemed pretty simple….. Hire a sculptor, get the files, get prototypes made and painted, get pricing, and voila. Yeah, that didn’t happen quite so easily!
Our first mistake was using a sculptor which didn’t specialize in miniatures. It’s a minefield and very specialist and requires an amazing talent. Our second mistake was using a prototyping company which didn’t have any experience in miniatures. I don’t even want to tell you how many times we adjusted the files and re-printed the rhino - big ones, little ones, ones with wonky legs……
We were close to putting a lid on the whole project. It is only due to the kindness and support of Daniel Melendez of Questron (they have produced a whole range of amazing miniatures for lots of well-known games) ( https://www.facebook.com/Questron-441242259255914/ ) that the project is going ahead now. He and his team did an amazing job of working with us and bringing to life what we had first envisioned. We now no longer have a horse with a cone on is head, but instead an amazing unicorn 😊
On the plus side, this means we can now confidently bring you a range that we know will be fantastic, as a company we never launch a project with just digital renders, only physical prototypes we can hold in our hand so we know we are ready to go, without the worries that any adjustments or major redesign may cause 😊
Your Core Box will Initially include a set of 10 companions with the possibility of adding 14 more if we can unlock them along the way!
When we started this journey making miniatures one of the main things we were most stunned about was the cost of moulds. To be able to unlock all the animals so we can offer you the whole set of 24 animals at this amazing price we need to cover the cost of the mould and buy bulk. By sharing and helping us let others know about this project, the more animals we can offer in your core box. Help us shout it from the rooftops :-)
We currently have 24 companions ready to go, all based on real life animals and the mythical companions I see in my dreams, The team did a great job of adding lots of detail to the models and making them as realistic as possible.
These Miniatures all come unpainted and are made from grey quality PVC plastic. They will be injection molded to ensure the highest possible detail.
The models are all based on actual DND 5e and Pathfinder size categories so no more quibbles about your companions reach and space requirements :-)
You have all already come up with some amazing suggestions and ideas. We want to do them all! For us to produce a line of animal companion and familiars which not only vary in size but also in style and stance would be amazing. This is just the start of our miniatures journey, and we are so looking forward to the next steps with you all

Risks and challenges
We have successfully fulfilled many other Kickstarters a few of which were actually early! As a company we always try to pre-empt any possible delays and plan in time buffers as a contingency. We always work with physical prototypes to ensure we have removed the risk of any large scale delays and so can get your miniatures to you as soon as possible for fun and games on the table.
Here at Critit we always want to involve our backers in our project and consider your input and ideas invaluable to helping us develop a range which works well for your needs. We promise to always have great communication with you all and always here via message should you have any concerns :-)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
