A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
About this project
What is RiVE?
RiVE seamlessly integrates simple hardware and software in a single system, making it the only product that simultaneously eliminates both the temptation AND the ability to use a mobile device while driving.
RiVE’s sleek hardware eliminates the driver’s physical interaction with the phone. You simply plug it in from your dashboard and a clip blocks the home button on your screen, freeing you from the ability to check your phone.
Meanwhile, the app’s software holds text messages (and all other) notifications while the vehicle is in use. Senders receive a customizable auto-reply informing them that the recipient is driving and will be notified of their message once the car is parked. At the same time, RiVE allows the driver to receive a phone call and stay connected to their phone’s GPS and entertainment services (music, podcasts, etc.).
How is RiVE Different?
RiVE is unique in that it offers effective safety protocols without the overbearing and invasive restrictions (e.g. blocking all phones in the car, requiring a complicated dashboard installation, or allowing for GPS tracking of the vehicle’s location). RiVE is as obvious as buckling a seatbelt and as easy to use as a phone charger (which RiVE also conveniently does).
What are RiVE's Benefits?
What is the Problem RiVE Solves?
Distracted driving is an epidemic. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that cell phones are a factor in 1.6 million crashes annually, causing 500,000 injuries and taking 6,000 lives each year. Texting while driving is now the single largest cause of death for teenagers in the United States and six times more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving.
While we know we shouldn’t text and drive, the impulse to reach for the phone is nothing short of compulsive. Whether it’s a text message, a social media notification, or an alert from any number of smartphone apps, we are now hardwired to look - and it can kill us.
22-year-old entrepreneur Tyler Nathan founded RiVE with the goal of making driving safer for everyone.
While studying at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School as an undergraduate, Tyler became increasingly alarmed by the dangerous compulsion he saw in his friends and himself to text and drive. Tyler made it his personal mission to put an end to the epidemic of distracted driving, and took a leave of absence from Emory University to develop RiVE full-time.
Beyond RiVE, Tyler loves to play and watch basketball, golf, football as well as spend time with friends and family.
RiVE is currently undergoing product testing. We will conduct third-party consumer testing, refine the hardware and software, and prepare for product market launch later this year. In order to make the next step, we need the Kickstarter community's help. Testing, product development, product molds, and manufacturing inventory is not cheap. We have all the necessary experience, expertise, and ability to get RiVE ready for market, but to help fund the expenses and expedite the process, we need a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Our team has developed mobile apps as well as designed, built and manufactured hardware products in the past. We are very confident in our abilities to bring a market-ready product to market. With that said, the hardware and app on their own are not straightforward, and especially integrating an app with hardware device adds another complexity to the product. Nevertheless, with the information at hand, we believe with the funds from Kickstarter, we can complete the last leg of product development, conduct consumer testing, and manufacture the hardware devices at a scale large enough to get the unit price low enough to provide RiVE at an affordable price.
Managing quality and manufacturing hardware comes with risks and challenge, but we know we have the experience and knowledge to address any unforeseen challenges in fulfillment and overcome any obstacles. We have already begun outreach to both domestic and international manufacturers for short and long term production.
While development, preparation, and fulfillment tends to take longer than expected, it has been and will continue to be our goal to get our rewards and RiVE units shipped out by the end of the fall of 2017. We will strive to get rewards out even sooner, but the last thing we want to do is over promise and under deliver. If for whatever reason, we experience delays in shipments, we guarantee we will inform you ahead of time and be as transparent as possible. Believe us when we say we want to fulfill our promises to you as quickly as possible!
On another note, we are finalizing our pricing strategy for our launch with the general public later this year. We are considering two options: selling the device for one lump sum and offering the service for free, or selling the device at a significantly lower price and charging a reasonable monthly subscription fee.
Let us be clear: Supporters who purchase a RiVE device through the Kickstarter campaign will NEVER pay a monthly fee, regardless of our ultimate pricing strategy.
We greatly appreciate the early support of our Kickstarter contributors and are thrilled to provide this exclusive offer. Thank you ☺
Your family will receive four RiVE units, four stickers, and four t-shirts. We'd also love for you to have a spot on our website with a testimonial about RiVE. Additionally, hop on a call with RiVE's CEO and Founder!
