About

BRAVISSIMO Music Game is a card-based board game that was first invented in 1995. The basic game is production-ready: dozens of handmade copies of the game have been played by volunteer testers around the country, and it is time to get this show on the road! This Kickstarter campaign is designed to help us get enough funding to have the games manufactured in Battle Creek, Michigan.

The basic game box includes: a quad-fold board; a Rulebook which includes explanations of all the musical terms and symbols found on the cards; two sets of cards (Beginner and Advanced Beginner, nearly 200 cards altogether); 6 wooden pawns (made in Maine); and a pair of dice. For a pledge of $45 or more, you will get a basic game, IF we reach our goal.

Playing Level One: players roll the dice and move their game pawn clockwise around the board, trying to acquire enough cards to "compose" one measure of music. When a player lands on a square, s/he is required to pick a card of that color off the pile and read/explain the term or symbol on the face of the card aloud. If the card is read correctly, the player can keep it. Less experienced players are allowed to use any and all sources of information in order to read their card correctly, including other players and the Rule Book, which explains all the terms and symbols found on the cards. More experienced players are only allowed to look at the Rule Book when it is not their own turn. Level One terms and symbols include: notes, rests, time signatures, tempo, and dynamic (volume)--these cards are used to "compose" a measure of music. Other types of cards included in the game are: a rose, which symbolizes a "good performance," and anecdote cards, which contain amusing stories of musical disasters.

Object of the game: In order to win at Level One (Beginner), A player needs to acquire enough cards to "compose" a measure of music consisting of: a time signature; enough notes and/or rests to fill out one measure of his or her time signature*; a tempo; and a dynamic. They must also have a "rose card" which symbolizes a good performance.

The first player to land on Carnegie Hall with a completed measure of music, wins!

Higher levels of the game introduce more advanced symbols and concepts.

Multiple levels of the game can be played simultaneously, so it is entirely possible for a beginner to win a game against a more advanced player.

Risks and challenges

We have already made careful plans for how to proceed if we make our goal, and even if we more than triple it; the biggest potential problems are probably those that could occur if this campaign is successful beyond our wildest dreams. If that happened, we would have to opt for a larger warehousing/fulfillment company to replace the shipping and storage arrangements we have already set up. We already have a few possibilities for that. The other size-related problem would be that the company we are buying our wooden pawns from does not color the pawns, so we will be dyeing them by hand, bagging them up with a pair of dice, and sending them to the games manufacturer. At some point (probably 10,000 games) we will have to switch over from the mass-produced-in-Maine pawns to custom wooden pawns that can be painted at the factory. (Pawn designs have already been sent to the factory and assessed for feasibility.) There is still a lingering question of how to get the dice in the bag with the pawns at the wood products factory, but I'm sure we'll be able to figure it out if we get that lucky!
