I am a biological electron microscopist and have worked in the field of medical research and electron microscopy for 13 years. For over a decade I have been fascinated by the tiny creatures and objects around us and how beautiful they are when viewed under an electron microscope. I want to share what I am lucky enough to see every day with others. I have used transmission and scanning electron microscopy to generate a collection of high resolution images showing bugs, pollen, cells and viruses and applied false colour to show the samples at their best. My website, www.miniaturehorizons.com shows a collection of my images. 12 of these images have been assembled into an A3 calendar for 2014.
What will the funds pay for?
Your support will cover the printing costs for the calendar, postcards, keyrings and fine art giclee prints of the images. Most printing companies require a minimum number of prints when publishing a calendar. The goal I have set will cover the minimum costs of printing the 500 copies of the calendar as well as the postcards, the keyrings and the fine art prints.
What are the rewards?
The main reward is, obviously, a copy of the calendar (Please note this is available internationally!). As a supporter you will also receive acknowledgements on my website and on the inside back page of the calendar as well as copies of the images on postcards and as art prints and a new poster reward. I am also offering an afternoon (3 hour) experience on the electron microscope where I will provide basic training and help you to obtain some beautiful images for you to keep. I will also apply false colour to one of the images and provide you with a framed print.
Will you tell us what the images show?
At the bottom of each page will be a caption detailing what the image shows and what the magnification is as well as some details of the specimen preparation.
Can you tell me about the calendar?
The calendar will be A3 size wall calendar and will show 12 of my microscopy images, one for each month. I will also have a page at the back of the calendar showing how the samples were prepared and containing the acknowledgements, a list of names for all the wonderful people who have supported this project.
When will we get the calendar?
I am aiming to have the calendars printed by October, so you should have the calendar in October/November, plenty of time before Christmas!
As an added bonus I have included a new reward for an A4 poster featuring the best caption submitted and all rewards above this one will also receive a copy of this poster. The image is of an ant and shown below.
Risks and challenges
The images are already finished and selected. The format of the calendar has been finalised and will either be a dark, as shown above.
I have a printer arranged for the fine art giclee prints and have tested the quality. It is amazing, the images look almost three-dimensional. I have yet to decide which printer to use for the calendars and will get a test print done from those on my shortlist and I will select the one with the best final quality for the calendar. I will get the fine art prints framed locally and they have assured me that their turn-around time is a few days.
As always, when working with printers and external contractors, things can go wrong and be delayed. I will endeavour to keep all backers informed of any delay through social media.
The final challenge will be distribution at the end of the project. If this project is successful it will be a pleasure to meet that challenge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
