Bayani, a boy of 11, is desperately trying to care for his sick father (a fisherman) and keep food on the table for his small family. Unfortunately, the sun has been shining down on the islands for the last month and night refuses to fall. The land is growing parched from the constant heat and the fish are moving further and further away from shore. During this disaster, the rain god, Pati', recruits Bayani to undertake a quest rescuing the nine kidnapped daughters of Lady Moon from the horrible monsters of lore. Bayani embarks on a great adventure with his friend, Tala, and using their wits, the kids defeat one hideous creature after another in their quest to rescue each of the Moon's daughters.
The Themes explored in Harry Potter, The Neverending Story, The Odyssey, and Alice In Wonderland are all shipwrecked on the timeless isle of Laguna in the Phillipines where all the folklore and myths of the aboriginal people are real. Bayani is a kid-friendly book focused on folklore stories and the messages and lessons they are trying to teach, while still being a “pokemon”-like monster-hunter story that will appeal to all ages.
So, that's my pitch. And it worked! Caliber Comics, one of the industry's earliest and most respected independent publishers, picked up Bayani. I am thrilled and honored to be a part of a publisher run by the legendary Gary Reed. Caliber was the publisher of some of my heroes in the business like Ed Brubaker, Brian Michael Bendis and Warren Ellis.
However, the business of creator-owned comics is a tough one. You essentially have to deliver a finished product. That means the cost of production is on the shoulders of the copyright holder, in this case, me. I've estimated the cost of producing the first 3 issues to be around $10,000. With Gary's permission, I'm able to offer cool stuff with this Kickstarter that won't be available anywhere else, so how about we split that number? I'll save up $5,000, and you wonderful folks pick up some great books and art to cover the other $5,000! It'll be like we're partners!
This book is designed a bit like an Indiana Jones movie. It's an adventure through myth and legend. And, like an Indiana Jones flick, the titles change with each issue. The first issue is entitled "Bayani and The Old Ghosts" after the Multo, the ghosts of past Babaylons (shaman) that Bayani meets who help guide his way. The second issue is "Bayani and The Witch of the Mountain," after the Lalahan, a monstrous volcano goddess holding the first Moon daughter hostage. The naming convention goes on from there for each individual issue. The collected editions, published by Caliber Comics, will be "Bayani and The Nine Daughters of the Moon" Volumes 1 through 4, hopefully releasing twice a year! Each collected edition will feature a unique cover, and include each of the single issue covers, as designed by Grant Perkins.
On that note, let's meet the creative team!
Grant Perkins is our stalwart artist. Grant is handling all penciling, inking, and coloring duties. Something he is immensely qualified for given his extensive experience working for such luminaries as 2000AD, Image Comics, and recently, The Penguins of Madagascar from Titan Comics.
Taylor Esposito is handling our gorgeous lettering. This guy is a consummate professional who consistently proves that comic lettering is an art form all its own. For many years, Taylor worked exclusively for DC Comics and lettered more books than I have room to list, but recently opened his own studio, Ghost Glyph Studios, to take lettering and graphic design to the next level!
Rich Bloom is our "go to" graphic design and logo man. Rich only recently started getting into comics, but he started near the top with the gorgeous design work in Image Comic's title C.O.W.L. The work he's doing for us is mind blowing!
Travis McIntire is me! I'm a comic writer who has worked for a variety of anthologies and I've had the pleasure of being rejected by the very best in the business! I'm also a co-founder of The Michigan Comics Collective, a non-profit publisher, one of the principles of Source Point Press and the writer of Up The River, a 21-issue story that is currently on the shelves!
I’ve tried to keep the rewards simple in order to stay within an extremely tight budget while keeping the price for you as low as I reasonably can. I am able to do this by being lucky enough to have quite a few of my artist friends volunteer ORIGINAL ARTWORK for this campaign!!!
For that reason, most of the rewards simply include the digital download version of issue #1 and the KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE VARIANT OF ISSUE 1! However, if you WANT any other reward tier listed, simply add that tier's amount to your total and drop me a message or comment to let me know. I'll be keep close track of who's getting what and there won't be any problems.
For example, let's say you want the original art piece by Jay Fosgitt (I don't blame you!), but you also want the Caliber published collected edition along with a piece of flash fiction written by me (Not sure what happened to your taste there, but, to each their own). You would simply take the $100 for Mr. Fosgitt's art and add the $35 for the earlier tier. Up your pledge to $135 and drop me a comment telling me what you're adding on. Simple as that and you're getting 2 great books, a gorgeous piece of art from a genius, and a fairly worthless short story by me! You're my hero! What's that you say? You want to have your script edited by the genius of David C. Hayes for $80 but you also want to add on the Richard Bonk/Mark McKenna Kickstarter exclusive variant cover edition of Issue #1? Sure thing! Just add another $10 (that rewards price) to your total (and $10 for shipping outside of the US!) and be sure to mention that too. Now you've backed $90 and you will get both the book, the digital copy (.pdf) and the consultation with Mr. Hayes! If there's any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
This section includes some links to where more information can be found about the artists helping me out and also includes an example of their art style. Please keep in mind that the art shown is only for an idea of style. The actual art you receive will be based on the world and story of Bayani.
Two amazing artists are pulling out all the stops to create a gorgeous, available here ONLY, variant cover of issue #1, Bayani and The Old Ghosts!
Richard Bonk - Image Comics, DC, Top Cow, Zenescope, CHAOS!, and a host of other published works.
Mark McKenna - LIke to read comics? Chances are, you've read something with Mark McKenna inking it. Published work from every major publisher over a nearly 30 year career. Inkwell Hall of Fame inker and one of the most prolific guys in the business.
And finally, THANK YOU SO MUCH for checking out this project!
Risks and challenges
Challenges abound in the world of publishing. The book might not sell well. It might not sell at all. However, I'm a fairly determined fellow, and I've already got an agreement in place to have these first 3 published, and I've already set aside the necessary funds to cover half of the production costs. I've also successfully managed and delivered on two previous kickstarters, run a successful non profit publisher, and am getting more experienced with the business by the day. I can promise a great deal of transparency and my best effort to address any and all delays!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
