The Good Night Yoga Story
Stretch Goal: $10,500
The Good Night Yoga Story
WE DID IT! I am so excited to announce that we reached our goal to create and publish Good Night Yoga-in j5 days thanks to all of you! I am over the moon about the response this book has generated and I promise the final project will be worthy of your generosity (of $$ + spirit)! A Deep Bow to You All!
We do have several Stretch Goals designed to reach more families and put a yoga practice into the hands of more children all over the country. If we reach the Stretch Goal of $10,500 we will be able to:
- Create the Good Night Yoga video and use it to help teach the sequence to kids in schools, afterschool programs and community centers around the country. (Also, ALL of you who have contributed to the creation of Good Night Yoga will have access to this beautiful instructional video.
- Donate copies of Good Night Yoga (and the instructional video) for use in schools and programs that support kids getting the academic and life skills they need (such as Head Start).
- Visit: Schools, Libraries and Community Programs to teach and share Good Night Yoga with young people and families. (We have a lot of requests coming in and this will make it possible!)
Good Night Yoga teaches kids a flow of yoga poses and gives them their own yoga practice right in their hands! This project comes directly out of the work I've done teaching yoga to kids for the past 15 years and to see it finally in book form is an absolute dream come true.
Good Night Yoga is born out of my classes and is designed to teach:
- Self Regulation
- Successful Transitions
- Self Soothing
Good Night Yoga offers a flow a child can practice alone or with an adult following the clear and vivid images and instructions. The book also includes a Guided Relaxation section that can be used separately or as the relaxing end (savasana) to the yoga sequence.
Kids can go back to the parts they love, try them out, experiment and explore.
Included in the book are guided relaxations to help children feel more relaxed, as they let go of their day and drift off to sleep, or at any point in the day. I have found with my own kids, and with kids I teach, that simply asking them to 'be calm' or to 'stop moving' does not really help them to experience relaxation. But, if those same kids are given a way to use their imaginations as a tool; they can literally transform their experience to one of deep rest.
And while this book is not exclusively for bedtime, I do love the way that that nature has its own rituals at the end of the day as animals settle in for the night, the air changes and the the stars come out. My hope is that this book and the ritual of the poses mirror the feeling of what is happening in the natural world.
Imagination Coming to Life
I searched high and low for Sarah Jane Hinder, the incredible illustrator on this project. Her illustrations bring the feeling of a yoga practice right off the page in a way that is nothing short of magical. All of her images are so inviting and colorful, they bring the practice to life and are the perfect expression of the Good Night Yoga flow. You can see more of her work on www.smogawoo.com
Where will the money go?
Your backing of this project will fund the process of taking this book from an idea to an actual product. There is so much more independence and creative license in producing the book this way (with your help!).
However, in the age of self-publishing, the costs to create a high quality product include: illustrations, quality printing for the vivid images, professional formatting, layout and editing for the project through an online publishing company as well as purchasing the ISBN number so the book can find its way into even more kids hands. Your money will go to funding each of these critical steps to ensure the creation of the best possible yoga book for kids out there!
8% will also go to Kickstarter and the processing fees.
OK, now for the good stuff. In addition to my undying gratitude you have the opportunity to receive:
- Be in the book! For those of you at the highest funding levels we will take a photograph of a child in your life and put her/him in an illustration in the book!
- A copy of Good Night Yoga
- A set of Good Night Yoga Stickers
- Good Night Yoga bookmarks
- Online Yoga Flow Class with Rolf Gates
- Yoga Flow with Rolf Gates DVD
- A personalized illustration of you and your family in Peg People by Sarah Jane HInder!
Again, thank you for being a part of this!
It is my belief that this book will make it into the hands of those who will love it and need it!
Over the past 15 years I have taught over 1000 kids and trained 80 teachers through the Kid Power Yoga program. Good Night Yoga is one of our regular yoga flows taught in my classes and trainings. It is such satisfying work, and the idea that more children everywhere could actually have their own yoga practice to explore through this book is a thrill I can't even put into words. I know that I will be able to get the book to countless kids and families through the many yoga studios and students out there who want it. We have a great infrastructure through Gates Yoga and Kid Power Yoga in place to distribute it, but first it has to be made. Thank you for bringing Good Night Yoga into the world!
Risks and challenges
We are in really good shape. The bulk of the work is done: the book is written, the illustrations are almost complete, the editor and formatting team are standing by. It has been an exciting process to take something that is by definition 'in motion' and put it on the page. The illustrator, Sarah Jane Hinder, and I still need to complete the work on how we will create two of the back pages (where the poses are on their own, separate from the larger illustrations). The idea is that this section could be viewed to 'get' the flow all at once (like some flow posters that are out there). We just want to be sure that we are still keeping the inviting 'look and feel' in that section.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
