About this project
Remember WinAMP? Or Milkdrop? People are still using and loving these programs, but APEXvj TURBO brings the concept of music visualization to the present day, utilizing modern technology and a dedicated approach to automating aesthetically pleasing visuals for music.
These days we mostly see these types of visuals at large festivals or concerts. They usually take months or even years to complete and the budgets for them are huge. APEXvj TURBO allows you to have similar visuals in your own home or when you're DJing, but naturally at a much, much lower price.
The goal for this Kickstarter is 200 000 NOK (Approximately $29 000), which insures that we have enough funding for the following awesome features:
Stream and visualize music from your local music library, as well as SoundCloud and other online sources!
- Truly next-gen music visualization, which can be fully automated or controlled directly by you
- Real-time visualization of audio inputs (microphone, DJ mixer output, anything!)
- Two-way MIDI support. Use your own MIDI controllers to control APEXvj, or let APEXvj automatically control lights, smoke machines and other gadgets controllable via MIDI
- Support for Philips HUE! Make lights react to sound and visuals on the screen
- 20+ visual scenes and large set of filters and color variations allows for thousands of possible visualization combinations
- Include your own images, text, videos and 3D models in the visualization!
APEXvj TURBO is planned for release on OS X and Windows in June 2015.
At 230 000 NOK (Approximately $33 500): Publish to YouTube feature - easily add visualization to your own music for publishing to YouTube. Perfect for indie artists!
At 250 000 NOK (Approximately $36 400):
Leap Motion support to switch between and adjust effects with gestures .
At 300 000 NOK (Approximately $43 700): DMX support - control a vast array of DMX-compatible devices!
- At 350 000 NOK (Approximately $51 000): Support for Oculus Rift and other VR headsets.
What you see in the Kickstarter video is already completed (in fact, you can try it yourself - just point your Chrome browser to apexvj.com right now!), but it's still far from where we want to take the project. In order to make it a viable tools for artists, DJs and people who love great visuals, we also need to make it a stand-alone app that you can run on your Windows or Mac computer, which is what APEXvj TURBO is all about.
Here are the milestones we have decided on:
- December 2014: framework test. Fully working window management on Windows and OS X.
- February 2015: stable OpenGL rendering, optimized for desktop and powerful laptops. Philips Hue integration done.
- March 2015: DMX/MIDI integration done and tested.
- April 2015: beta access for Kickstarter backers with the right pledge.
- May 2015: closed beta access for all Kickstarter backers.
- June 2015: APEXvj TURBO available for everyone!
APEXvj was started four years ago as an experimental project by creative programmer Simo Santavirta and has served millions of people since then.
It has fans all over the globe: DJs, VJs, bands and artists, and most importantly: people who simple love good music and great visuals.
During this indie journey, the project has received several industry recognitions such as the Adobe / TheFWA : The Cutting Edge Award and articles in magazines such as Digital Production.
In order to make APEXvj TURBO a reality, Simo has teamed up with a small team of talented developers and artists from WorldView Innovations in Norway, as well as friends and colleagues from the booming Finnish tech industry.
Around 10% will go to Kickstarter/Amazon. Between 15-35% will go towards taxes. At least 25% will be used to finance the perks for Kickstarter pledgers, and the rest will go towards Simo's living cost for the future time required to develop the project.
The visuals in APEXvj are created with an exciting new technology called Fuse. It's been under development for over three years and Simo have been a pilot user for over a year. It's amazing.
This technology allows for the creation of applications for any platform as native code. No HTML5 wrappers or bad templates or cheating: Real code. Real performance, on all of APEXvj's target platforms (WebGL, Windows and OSX).
Fuse is also a great way to target mobile platforms in the future, without having to waste all of the glorious code and visuals already written.
When they do, or even better, when an unexpected pattern surprises you in a positive way, your body rewards you by producing dopamine.
Dopamine makes us happy, creative and motivated!
When Simo worked on the sound analyzing algorithm for APEXvj, he found a way to detect these rewarding moments in a song and to use them to add visually stimulating components at the right time. The intended result is to strengthen the dopamine producing effect of experiencing music.
First of all, thank you for visiting this Kickstarter page. It means a lot! We would also like to thank all of those individuals who helped to get the project as far as it has come already. Risks and challenges
A project like this requires a large degree of software quality assurance and testing on the different desktop OS platforms. Managing this complex process and minimizing delays are the largest challenge we face in bringing APEXvj TURBO to you.
To help ensure realistic deadlines, we have completed the vast majority of the development before launching this Kickstarter, as you can see by visiting the current version of APEXvj that runs in your browser using WebGL.
It is our commitment to you, the Kickstarter backers, that we will maintain consistent communication throughout the process. This means regular updates, product screenshots, and plenty of behind the scenes insight as we complete the journey to release APEXvj TURBO.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
