About this project
introduction by Stan Lee
Comic Book Babylon gathers icons HARLAN ELLISON, STAN LEE, ALAN MOORE, FRANK MILLER, JOE KUBERT, GENE COLAN, DAVE COCKRUM, WALTER SIMONSON and NEAL ADAMS into a conversation with CLIFFORD METH where anything goes. Among other stories, you'll learn how & why X-Men co-creator Dave Cockrum became the first Marvel artist to receive a monetary settlement and lifetime royalties for his creations after years of suffering and virtual banishment... You'll meet a well-known Hollywood film producer who doesn't like to pay his writers (until someone squeezes his face)... You'll read Harlan Ellison saying things no one else would publish...
This fascinating book collects Meth's decades of comics columns and essays--some too outrageous to publish in their day--and adds never-before-revealed material. Everything is brought to life with sensational illustrations by the celebrated and beloved Marvel/DC artist MICHAEL NETZER.
What's achieved is a startling look at the REAL villains and heroes of comics. Introduction by STAN LEE. Art by NETZER. Rants by METH. Join us!
"Clifford Meth is a sharp cookie and a terrific writer. The stories about his Hollywood experiences are worth their weight in gold to anyone who's ever tried to navigate these treacherous waters." - Josh Olson (Academy Award Nominee)
Note: We hit our goal on Day 2! Please see updates for our stretch goals, which will allow us to create and offer an alternative cover by the late DAVE COCKRUM and get people comics from Dave's personal collection.
June 3rd: We hit our 1st stretch goal. Now here's our 2nd one. If we reach $6600, we will add a new section to both the physical and digital book called "Back Atcha" (or "What Goes Around" or "Good For the Goose") in which comics creators and a rockstar or two will turn the tables on Clifford Meth and put some tough questions to him. BOB LAYTON (Iron Man), DAVID LLOYD (V For Vendetta), DON McGREGOR (Black Panther), MICHAEL NETZER (Huntress), ANDY SHERNOFF (of the legendary punk rock group The Dictators), DAVID GEROLD (who wrote Star Trek's "Trouble With Tribbles") are just the first six lined up to throw fastballs as Cliff sits above the dunking pool. All in good fun, of course. Until someone loses an eye.
Note 2: To my generous backers--As much as I appreciate everyone's support, I'm uncomfortable taking a pledge for more than a reward amount. Consequently, if you pledged HIGHER than the reward(s) you are asking for, I insist on giving you extras. My father raised me right. --Clifford Meth
Risks and challenges
This book is 90% written. All that's missing is a budget to print it and pay for the art, as well as the digital conversions and distribution platform to put it on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Books. The only possible delays will be technical. For these, we rely upon Jason Sacks, who has a serious track record and has signed on as digital coordinator.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Clifford Meth is a world-class pain in the ass. If he wasn't, Marvel never would have coughed up serious $$$ to pay off Dave Cockrum... Meth has built a cult-like following of readers who prefer his no bullshit style and allow him to say whatever he wants. The downside: No New York Times Bestsellers. The upside? Notes of praise from other writers who played by their own rules, from Pete Townshend and Leonard Cohen to Harlan Ellison and Kurt Vonnegut.
