Mention the name Bill Hearne and tributes come in from the likes of Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, and hundreds of regional players whose lives Bill has influenced. Best known for his unique style of flat-picking, which he calls cross-picking (and basically sounds like two guitar players at once), together with his wonderful baritone voice, Bill doesn’t write his own songs, yet his interpretation of some of the best songwriters in the country and Americana music scenes is legendary. Having released several albums with his beloved Bonnie, four (solo and with his trio) since Bonnie’s retirement due to health issues, and most recently a ‘family album’ that includes his nephew Michael and Michael’s grown children, as well as nieces, cousins, and sister-in-law, Bill is ready to return to his roots as he heads back to Howlin’ Dog studio. Bill couldn’t be more excited about his “Bakersfield album”, digging deep into his honky-tonk roots, featuring some of the more obscure songs of folks like Buck Owens, Ray Price, and Merle Haggard.
He’s inviting some standout names in the business, like Earl Poole Ball (best known as Johnny Cash’s piano player for 20 years and for The Byrds classic Sweetheart of the Rodeo album), Paul Pearcy (Austin-elite drummer), Lloyd Maines, and a few other legends to join him and producer Don Richmond at Howlin’ Dog Records. Legally blind, Bill’s livelihood has been playing music since 1968. While it gets harder and harder to stay afloat in the music business, for some, like Bill, there is simply no other path.
To complete this “roots of honky-tonk” project, Bill is going to need some help. It costs money to bring in excellent musicians from around the country and to pay for studio time, packaging, duplication, and promotion. As a Bill Hearne fan, we know you’ll see the value of helping him achieve his life-long dream of paying tribute to this music that was so formative in his career and will want to support him with this project. To do so, pick from one of the packages below. Kickstarter is an all or nothing proposition. If we don’t raise the money in 30 days, Bill will receive no funding. Please join us if you can in helping get this great project out into the world!
