Chocoholics, culinary explorers & food eccentrics: WELCOME!
We created a most irreverent cookbook: How to Kill Yourself with Chocolate. Your ultimate guide to heaven!
The chocolate adventure about to unfold is based on Theobromine. Commonly found in cocoa, this alkaloid has lethal potential in sufficient quantities... Here it comes served in a glossy, softcover A3 book, which combines 30 mouthwatering chocolate recipes with beautifully crafted, surreal photographs.
The very first edition is ready to be published and we need your support to make this dream a reality!
The chocolate story
Martina & Valentine: it's a match! We are friends, chocoholics and visual junkies. After graduating with a Master of Arts in London, we have been working respectively in photography and graphic design. In early 2012 we decided to join creative forces and focus on a project that would allow us to indulge our mad passion: chocolate.
We did a lot of research and played around with the fantasy of chocolate running every aspect of one's life! As we were pushing the dream of consuming the 'food of gods' without moderation, we came across Theobromine...
Theobromine is a subtle toxin found in cocoa. It is responsible for the good mood and stamina that chocolate brings to its eater. Overdosing on it though can lead to chocolate poisoning. We calculated that the deadly dose for an average weight British adult is reached when 7.74 kg of dark chocolate are consumed within 24 hours.
We knew this was our calling: to create the most heavenly way to enter the afterlife! As enthusiastic amateur chefs, we spent more time in our kitchen, endeavoured to bake, taste and adjust ingredients & timings. Well balanced lavender truffles, runny lava muffins, and subtly distilled choco whisky cocktails are among the results. The final selection of recipes totals nearly 8kg of chocolate.
We are blessed with the most incredible bunch of friends who made all the difference, turning this project into a globetrotter adventure. Not only did they supply us with their favourite chocolate recipes, but also modelled for us. Over hilarious, precarious and often challenging situations we bonded even further! Hunting for the perfect shot, we drowned and even buried ourselves in chocolate (that was just a little too much to ask of our friends).
Along the way, we had inspirational conversations with recognised figures from the Science, Food, Creative and Publishing sectors.
"When Valentine, Martina and I met more than four years ago to discuss our mutual love of chocolate, not in my wildest dreams did I expect them to go on to create a book with such stunning photography and that is both beautiful and one that can't but help you smile. What's more, How To Kill Yourself With Chocolate gives you recipes totalling just enough theobromine to end your life in what must be the most pleasurable way possible. Bravo!" Micah Carr-Hill, former 'Head of Taste' Green&Blacks chocolate
We have printed our first dummy and our industry trusted printer is now ready to push the start button on his high-end digital press. Together we have devised a tight but manageable schedule to produce the books and postcards on time for Christmas [see 'Risks&Challenges' section for more details]. After the campaign we plan to supply selected bookshops around London, the UK and Europe. And who knows, maybe the journey takes us even a little further?
We would love you to become part of our journey, and we cannot set off without your help! Take a look at the wide range of delectable rewards that are available and together, let's bring this project to life.

Risks and challenges
We are working on a very tight schedule but we believe it is possible to send our book and postcard rewards in time for you to receive them by Christmas.
The book is designed and ready to go to print. Our printer offered to proof the book and postcards just before the end of our campaign, and to print and deliver in a 3-day turnaround as soon as we've hit our goal! It is only possible because the book is a softcover object that doesn't require any gluing and drying.
We have been checking the Royal Mail guidelines for Christmas postage so that we can send rewards on time according to each backer's country of residence. We have taken a week off work to focus on the task of packing and posting.
As we are aware that Kickstarter funding might take up to 3 weeks to reach our bank accounts, we are prepared to put the money forward ourselves - as freelancers based in UK, we both have taxes to pay by the 31st of January and enough money aside for that purpose.
(Please note that we cannot guarantee Christmas deliveries for Africa and Middle East, as the latest posting date recommended by Royal Mail is a day before the end of the campaign)
