About

An interface that helps you develop fluency in the real world

Making exercising healthy language learning habits more accessible

As Americans we don't use the second language we learn in school on a regular basis out in the real world. We're not in the habit of using it and it's not in our cultural mindset to prioritize the effort. For those of us who do, the effort we make isn't trackable and it's not supported by technology. It's really hard to sustain and to stay motivated.  Inevitably, our language plateaus or declines.

There's more we could be doing to optimize the best environment for language acquisition - real life. That's where higher fluency is developed and technology can help refine and polish the details.

Designing a UX for the language learning gap

As intermediate and advanced speakers of world languages we are falling short of our abilities because we don't engage enough in authentic real world experiences. Why? They can be hard to access and when we make the effort online (the most accessible place) we're not supported in the way we could. I am personally part of this language gap and have spent over a decade testing and researching lifestyle based ways to address language acquisition in real world environments. The design of this user interface aligns with research and empirical findings into pragmatics, task based learning, spaced repetition, input and output cycles and meaningful content interactions.

Joining the Call to Action

Moving from 'language learning' into 'language acquisition'

As an advocate for world language education I am happy to join this Call to Action by The American Academy of Arts & Sciences

"A more forward-thinking strategy for meeting future needs would advance policies and investments that promote language education for all Americans."

We need real exposure and real usage in the real world

This UX design helps learners with language lifestyle practices to develop fluency in the real world.

Imagine...

A data tracking dashboard for your second language
An overview of how active you are in your second language
An overview of how active you are in your second language

A way to track your efforts and see your progress

See how much you engage with:

  • articles - #words read per day
  • videos - # hours spent watching / listening
  • conversation - # hours spent speaking
  • writing - # words written per day

Track your learning metrics

  • how many new words / phrases you've added to your list
  • corrective feedback notes
  • your thematic sets
  • how many new words / phrases you've learned over time

A place to capture and organize the content you create & curate

  • articles
  • conversations
  • videos
  • music
  • writing: emails, texts, journal entries, etc...
API integration that allows you to access your second language audio files in one location with integrated language acquisition tools
articles, videos, audio files, and writing all captured and organized with data tracking, social cooperation, and learning tools.

Administrative tasks turned into acquisition

The fact that we cannot directly select text from movie subtitles on Netflix or other streaming platforms may not be a bad thing.  Screen-grabbing subtitles and using annotation tools to identify language segments of interest provides an interactive challenge that supports language acquisition

An invitation to backers

Become a usability tester

Dear language enthusiast and backer,

I invite you to put your design thinking hat on and think about how we can enhance the user experience for language learners on the web.

For example:

We know that spaced repetition promotes language acquisition.  Returning to your subtitle captures with the same visual reference can help you build a connection with the language segment you noticed.  The text is not selectable.  Imagine a feature that allows you to easily retype the word or phrase to add it to your list.

This exercise will help you retain what you want to learn.

Keep day dreaming and thinking about how we can design tools to enhance acquisition in the real world.

Language related conversations lead to acquisition

Features like adding a native speaking friend to an episode you're watching lets you have a meaningful language related dialogue in the context of your personal interest.

Having conversations about the things you need to understand is exercising a healthy language learning habit. Over time, this exercise will help develop your fluency and knack for language.

Imagine an interface that makes exercising healthy habits more accessible. That's why we're doing this!

Why it's Better than Translation

Annotating makes you engage with the content on a deeper cognitive level.  As intermediate and advanced speakers we know that machine translations are often inaccurate. Wouldn't it be cool to annotate sentence structures that stand out to you, tag a friend, and come to understand a nuance of language that only a native speaker can help you to understand?

Taking the design concept to the next phase

In order to develop something that's truly useful to users and language learners in the U.S. and around the world, intermediate and advanced speakers need to test the design and offer feedback into their experience and product expectations.

This is where I need you! And why the rewards include an invitation to become a usability tester.  Prototyping and testing take a lot of hours and skilled talent.

Your support at this early stage will help bring this concept to life and help create a much needed change in how we learn other languages.

Here's how the funds will be used

Testing the prototype design with targeted users  (intermediate & advanced learners who engage in real world content and experiences) is a massively important pre-development step and requires a team of skilled UX designers, data scientists, project managers and of course - YOU, as a use-tester. Here's some info on the importance of this stage and here's some info on why we're looking for 50K.

The timeline

July: meet 50K fundraising goal and send usability tester invitations to project funders. Note: invitations will include a survey to determine tester eligibility.

August: finish click-through prototype and finalize team of usability testers

September: usability testers submit their feedback

October: tester feedback implemented into the next design phase

November: next round of feedback implemented

December: high-fidelity prototypes designed and start prep for development

The product brought to market is intended to be an accessible resource for all language learners.

The Team

Experts in the filed

Linguists specialized in second language acquisition theory and technology, self-made polyglots, and world language teachers.

We're members of these cool language EdTech organizations and have been working to advance bilingual proficiency for a long time:

ACTFL | IALLT | CALICO

Usability tester - you!

You're too advanced for Rosetta Stone, perhaps not able to live abroad, hem-and-haw over taking another class, and simply want to be more fluent. You might be a hard core digital life-hacker and aspiring bilingual rising up and demanding more.

Language Lifestyle Ambassadors

Community based native speakers of world languages who form partnerships with other local organizations working to achieve common goals. Their overall mission is to integrate world languages into local communities in a way that supports language learners and promotes access to authentic immersive experiences without having to travel abroad.

You are welcome to join the Ambassador Program here.

We will all work together on the next phase of prototype design to deliver a new way for plateauing bilinguals to step into higher levels of fluency based on lifestyle practices and the adoption of "healthy language learning habits".

Risks and challenges

The prototype design is highly complex. It's based on a life-hack that included a number of different applications. Each of the apps used in the life-hack put a lot of time and money into the development of their products. Now here we are proposing to umbrella these features with added language acquisition components.

This is why the prototype phase you're supporting is crucial and why we need a team of rock star usability testers who are invested in this project as much as we are.

We need users who are able to wrap their mind around this way of learning and can help inform the next phase of the UX design before we move to development. A good design is more than any one person. This means our biggest challenge will be collecting user feedback and evolving the design into something that will be truly pleasant to use and useful to a variety of users.

My personal hope is that by putting this on Kickstarter those tempted to copy the idea will reach out instead. Let's come together with like minds and create something that will help transform how we learn languages.

    You are Ellen Degeneres

    Dear Ellen,

Welcome! This spot is especially reserved for you! You'll notice the rewards follow a Fibonacci inspired sequence. I see this as a good luck charm! And June is PRIDE month!

I'm celebrating my second year as an out and proud gay woman. When I started Language Lifestylist in 2013 I was not very out and not very proud. But I had a dream to help people establish fluency through their life passions and healthy language learning habits.

    A BRIEF HISTORY
I was cheered on by the best people to carry on with this idea and a couple VC firms became interested in my pitch. I was invited to second meetings. But I got cold feet in 2015 and didn't go back. It took me a while to realize the shame I had been feeling and the closet I had put my heart into. How could I advocate for an idea when I wasn't even advocating for myself? I wasn't proud.

Today, I am out and proud. I'm thankful to you and everyone who has led by example and shown us what is possible when we believe in ourselves.

And that's why I'm launching this campaign during PRIDE month. Because good ideas in closets may never escape. When we learn to accept ourselves we're able to connect more deeply with others and collaborate into doing great things.

Language Lifestylist is dream that belongs to anyone who has ever wanted to truly speak another language: the kind of language that's original, natural, and fluent from the heart, not from a script.

Thanks Ellen, if you're reading this!
