About

Imagine a role playing game where you can sit down at any time, with anyone, and just play. You pull a character sheet out of your wallet, use a rolling app on your phone and get to it.  Everyone already knows all the rules and those that don't, learn them immediately.

Charm is a tabletop Role Playing Game that uses a simple, yet versatile rule set. The rules can be learned in minutes and offer a fully immersive game experience. A character can fit on a sheet as small as a business card. 

The 125 page 8"x8" hardback book will be fulfilled through Drive Thru RPG.

Charm uses our intuition about a scenario to help drive the game with a focus on role playing. The game allows characters to be built so they are good at what they do. This allows each player to have a unique experience and have confidence when making decisions.

 Charm is not only a standalone universal system. Included are 7 Scenarios that will get you gaming quickly:

  •  Action News Team 5: You are the city's most elite local news team! It isn't easy staying on top. You'll need to pull together all your guile and charisma to keep the number 1 spot.
  •  Temporal Raiders: Travel time, seeking the ultimate heist. Ally with powerful historical figures, change history, be your own grandfather. What could go wrong?
  •  Dustbound: Take on the role of a god-touched gunslinger in a bleak world of dust and decay. Fight Oni, rival gunslingers and vengeful townsfolk. 
  •  Mystery Solvers Incorporated : Jeepers, guys. Play as a gang of kids, or possibly a lovable pet, who solve mysteries using their astonishing meddling abilities.
  •  The Pact of Night: Small town woes meet big monster drama. Play a Vampire or Werewolf as you balance your life with the humans during the day and beasts at night.
  •  Onitech: You exist in a high-tech world ruled by demon masters. Civility has superseded morality, leading to a perverted and deadly state of affairs. 
  •  Victorian Asylum Reflections: In Victorian London, people are being replaced with mirrored doubles. Uncover the duplicitous  mystery in this dark world.

As with all SMG Roleplaying Games, Charm is filled with beautiful artwork that helps bring to life the world and scenarios.  

Mystery Incorporated: You are just a bunch of kids and possibly their really smart pet. How much meddling can you do?

 Charm's design is basic, yet functions as an RPG with a much higher complexity. It's a great game for players of all skill levels. Charm teaches newer players the ropes of what RPGs are all about. It gives seasoned players the chance to eschew less efficient rules that don't add fun during play.

As long as you have one D20, one D6 and a small slip of paper, you can play Charm. Make and play a game almost anywhere in an instant. Carry your character sheet in your wallet.

Charm uses a simple set of guidelines to get started:

1. The players and GM discuss the game scenario and genre. The GM forms a goal for the players and designs threats that need to be overcome.

2. A power level is selected. This describes how powerful the characters are in the world, their standard abilities and their exception powers.

3. All players make a character. Choose an Archetype based on the scenario, a Nature the character acts with and 3 Aspects. An Aspect describes a character's talent. Each Aspect gets a small pool of points which may be used to activate a power, react reflexively, enhance your skill checks, or reroll your dice.

4. Start Playing! 

Rolling: When a challenge is presented, the player must roll if they want to pass it. A single D20 + a single D6 are both rolled at once. After rolling, review the D20 result. If the value meets or exceeds a check set by the GM, the challenge is overcome. If the result is much higher or lower than the check value, the character may gain or lose something. The value on the D6 may be added in to beat the challenge by spending an Aspect point.

Check Values: Characters must meet a check value to beat a challenge. The GM sets a check based on how easy it is for a character of a power level to succeed. 3 is easy, 6 is moderate, 9 is hard and so on.

Characters have an easier time passing challenges related to their field of expertise. A gunslinger's check for shooting a playing card at 100 yards is lower than a miner's.

Nature: Nature describes how a character acts or approaches situations. If using Nature can be justified to help succeed a challenge, it may be spent to gain a minimum guaranteed success.

Aspects: Aspects each have points associated. You primary Aspects have more points. Anytime during play, when you can justify the use of the Aspect as part of a challenge, you may spend an Aspect point. Spending a point allows you to add the  D6 value to the D20, reroll either or both dice, activate a Power, or take an action on another character's turn.

A total of 1 Aspect point per character level may be spent per action. As characters progress, they can spend more points to do amazing things each turn.

At this point, you should know enough to be able to play Charm!

Games like Charm are a labor of love. They can exist in the digital world, but truly can't be brought to life without funding and support. We need your help to make this game and get it in the hands of players. This means help with funding for editing and art along with printing. 

Lets share this game with the world and help spread the word, that there's a different way to RPG.

Budget Breakdown

Bounty Hunter Run - You can take on the role of the heroes or the  bounty hunters in this scenario. Over an uninhabited jungle planet, a  group of intergalactic bounty hunters has shot down a ship of important  heroes and they're on the hunt. The clock ticks as reinforcements are  incoming. Will the bounty hunters capture the marks before then? Or will  the heroes win the day?

No Way Out - You're a small, tightknit crew of ne'er-do-wells  that operate a medium-sized salvage ship. When you get a distress call  for a luxury liner and no human life-signs aboard, you think you've got  it made. But once you get on board, you realize you're not alone. Sci-fi  and survival horror blend together in this scenario.

These Scenarios will be written by Bryan Young and are completely designed by him to run in the Charm system. Expect excellent writing with interesting characters and interactions with the world.

MORE ART

As the total pledge level increases we will continue to add new art pieces!  MORE PLEDGES = MORE ART. We would love to add about another 10 pieces, that would increase the total by about +40%.

 Since we are fulfilling though DTRPG, we are using their pricing guidelines. We would like to offer offset printing, but that uses a completely different shipping model. With enough books purchased, we can get there!

 Strange Machine Games – SMG – was founded in 2011 as a small Role Playing Game, POD publisher. SMG launched with the successfully crowd funded Age Past RPG. Age Past is 400 pages, full color, and rivals much larger companies production value for layout and art. Since, SMG has published SuperAge and the Robotech RPG. All the books are beautiful and use top down design to create the best play experience.

SMG aims to make the most dynamic and interesting Board Game & RPG products on the market, even if it means using strange machines to get there. In every SMG product, we aim to provide play experiences that provide a unique experience. We hope to win over the hearts of those who give SMG products a try.

SMG products are designed, not just created. Cogent consideration goes into every design decision to help craft a great experience in every aspect of the game, from the layouts, player interaction, to the content. We truly endeavor to bring you products that speak to your soul.

Risks and challenges

In general this project is straight forward. It's a small page count and being POD printed in the USA buy a well known printer. Shipping will be managed through DTRPG directly which saves cost and time. The book is completely written and play tested over a dozen sessions. We just need the funds to acquire art and editing. The layout and formatting will performed in house.
