About this project
On the 15th of February 2013, a 4.5-billion-year-old relic of the solar system unexpectedly pierced Earth’s atmosphere and began its fiery descent toward the surface. It exploded 15 seconds later in a half-megaton explosion. The meteorite was named Chelyabinsk and it is recognized as one of the century's most historical meteorite impact.
We are a team of designers from Bath UK, who after seeing the fireball's descent to Earth and learning about the incredible journey of the Chelyabinsk Meteorite, were inspired to share this rare artifact with the world. We wanted a piece of the Chelyabinsk Meteorite to be shared with everyone, and thus, the concept of INFINITY - The Pen From Space was born.
We set ourselves the challenge of designing a unique Pen centered around showcasing the Meteorite while delivering an exceptionally high-quality writing experience yet at an affordable price.
After solving the problem of how we would process the Meteorite to the correct form and then combine it in a water clear encapsulation, we went on to review as many Pen body designs, nibs and refills that we could source and finally selected an established, beautiful, classic, well balanced pen body design, that is compatible with the world's best German engineered nibs and refills, in order to combine an iconic look and feel with a high-quality, contemporary, smooth and consistent writing experience.
INFINITY has been designed in limited numbers and comes as either a Fountain Pen, Rollerball, or Ballpoint Pen. All three have been perfectly weighted and contrast a dark matter resin with a polished metal finish, to produce an exceptional everyday pen.
Moving in excess of 12 miles per second (faster than Mach 60), 62 miles above the glaciated plains of the Russia–Kazakhstan border, a 4.5-billion-year-old relic of the solar system punctured the Earth’s atmosphere and began its fiery descent over the snow-covered Kurgan and Chelyabinsk Oblasts. It was tailed by a pair of smoky, iridescent plumes, and constantly shed debris before abruptly decelerating and exploding in a final half-megaton explosion. The whole explosive journey took just over 15 seconds after over 4 billion years tumbling silently through space.
The explosion left behind a group of rocky remnants that headed west, passing 25 miles from Chelyabinsk city center. The largest landed 18 miles farther in Lake Chebarkul at the foot of the Ural Mountains, creating a 6-meter wide hole in its ice. The event was the most dramatic near-Earth asteroid airburst since the 1908 Tunguska impact blast in Siberia. It is a unique meteor event in being recorded in such vivid detail.
It took Russian scientists 5 months to identify the meteorite buried in mud in the depths of the lake. An operation to recover the meteorite began in September 2013 and concluded with the raising of a fragment with an estimated mass of 654 kg.
Meteorites are some of the oldest, rarest and most remarkable objects on our planet. They carry within them messages and materials that have traveled enormous distances from the depths of space and they’re truly some of the most enchanting things we’ll ever get to experience.
After seeing the incredible footage of the Chelyabinsk meteorite entering the earth’s atmosphere, we wanted to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to hold this rare and amazing piece of the universe in the palm of their hand.
Our goal was to combine this historic artifact that had traveled across the Universe from the beginning of time, with something that you could use every day, and thus INFINITY - The Pen From Space was born.
We wanted to Design something that could be used by everyone, every day: whether you are a designer, graphic artist, entrepreneur, writer, scientist, musician, inventor or you simply want a beautiful, iconic product to inspire you.
INFINITY is based on an iconic design and has been perfectly weighted, whilst it contrasts a dark matter resin with a metal finish to produce an exceptional everyday pen.
INFINITY - Fountain Pen
The fountain pen comes with a high-quality twist refill converter or alternatively you can use standard ink cartridges. We've provided an exceptional medium nib that delivers an excellent writing experience and the fountain pen can be used posted or unposted.
INFINITY - Rollerball
The Rollerball comes with the German-engineered Schmidt ceramic ball refill used and re-branded by the world's best pen brands. The Rollerball also offers comparability with Mont Blanc, Monteverde, ACME and other ceramic refill suppliers. If preferred, the Schmidt Fineliner and tube roller refills also fit.
The twist out ballpoint version comes with the amazing Schmidt Easyflow 9500 refill and also accommodates any industry standard compatible insert. Schmidt also offers a zero gravity refill option should any of you fancy taking your INFINITY back into space.
All pens pass through our production and quality checks before being shipped by Amazon. We provide a simple and fast exchange warranty giving you a peace of mind.
We wanted to provide the widest range of purchase options as possible while keeping the logistics and costs of handling multiple products as efficient as possible.
You can get INFINITY as either a Single Pen of any style - Rollerball, Ballpoint or Fountain Pen - or in packs of 2 or 3 for gifting to friends and family.
The 2 Pack Early Bird are fixed pairs of the same pen, while the normal 2 Pack offers full flexibility in Mix & Match format.
The 3 Pack is fixed triples in both the Early Bird and normal 3 Pack as the logistics complexity gets just too complicated for Mix and Match here.
You can also pledge the COMPLETE - which is a mixed set of 3 giving you one pen of each type. The MISSION gives you a pack of ten in Mix & Match if you want to spread the inspiration around.
Everyone pledging will receive a digital wallpaper pack in HD to enable you to immediately show your friends you joined the INFINITY mission. In addition all Kickstarter pledgers will be listed on our website Hall of Fame as founding fathers of the brand.
Meteorite hunters frequently use a 'magnet test' to verify the iron content of potential meteorites and to distinguish them from plain earth rocks. Meteorites high iron content makes them magnetic, its that simple. Don't forget test yours with a magnet when it arrives!
We source our meteorite from long-standing meteorite traders with years in the industry. Just like the fine art and gold bullion markets they conduct the due diligence and establish provenance to verify the authenticity of meteorite they buy. We are therefore able to provide you a guarantee and a certificate of authenticity which we will deliver as soon as the project closes to all backers.
We have completed our design, prototyping, product testing and have all suppliers on board. We have established distribution from two Amazon warehouses, one in the USA, and one in the UK so we can dispatch accurately, quickly and with confidence.
We want you to be delighted with your INFINITY so we have built in a personal quality control phase, ensuring each and every pen is finished to the highest standard. Remember your INFINITY is protected by warranty.
Our design for manufacture process is complete and we have a robust multi-supplier strategy in place for production in June. We have partnered with Backerkit for fulfillment and Amazon for distribution to remove uncertainty by selecting best in class suppliers with a proven track records.
We always wanted the Kickstarter INFINITY to be as cost effective for backers as possible. We have worked really hard to find a way minimize packing and fulfillment charges and include these in the price to most of the world whilst also covering all customs charges. We have also made it a priority to pass on all the savings from consolidated shipping costs.
Thanks to the supply chain we have set up very cost-effective ways of delivering INFINITY to you. Below is an explanation for each delivery group:
The United States and Canada (Shipping & Customs included):
We distribute INFINITY through Amazon in the US as they are accurate, have predictable shipping times and are cost effective.
European Union (Shipping & Customs included):
This is exactly the same as the US bound shipment, except this one goes to Amazon in England for EU-wide distribution.
Any country not in the EU nor the US/Canada ($9 shipping):
If you're not in the EU or the US/Canada: for example South America, Mexico, Eastern Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, etc. It’s only an extra $9 shipping for you guys. We will mark these Pens as "Kickstarter rewards" on the customs forms using the manufacturing cost as the commercial value of the Pen.
Risks and challenges
Our major challenge, was how could we encapsulate the Meteorite into a balanced working pen that looked great. We knew we had to seal the Meteorite so it wouldn't oxidize and deteriorate over time but we also wanted it to be something you could get close to and hold in the palm of your hand.
We approached the design by focusing on our key priorities; water clear encapsulation, aesthetically pleasing classic design, and a contemporary smooth writing experience at an affordable price.
Having determined that the overall writing experience of Infinity would be a function of its shape, weight and balance of body components, working in unison with the refill. A large part of our effort was used to source experienced part manufacturers who were both happy and capable to make changes to their respective platforms that would allow us to combine the best elements of each part, in order to deliver something that is unique, you can use every day, while also being compatible with the best refills on the planet - Schmidt.
It took months to find, test and filter down to the right platform and make the necessary changes to ensure that it wasn't out of balance, that the meteorite looked great and crucially also that the pen functioned well with the selected refills for everyday use.
The pen body and parts have been adapted from a tried and tested platform so we are happy that there are no major design faults in the main body of the Pen itself. We built the encapsulation prototypes by hand and tried a number of casting techniques before we found one that worked and that was repeatableLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
