The idea for Talons originally started to form back in 2007 when I was playing a lot of online MMORPG games. I had been working in the business world for a couple of years in finance so I was spending an inordinate amount of time on the computer. My arms and shoulders would get sore from the uncomfortable positions and my hands were going numb from being on the raised keyboard for prolonged periods of time. I also thought wouldn't it be great to sit back and relax like that certain captain of the most successful TV Sci-fi series that we all admired?
I began looking around at other keyboard designs, some of which were pretty extreme but none of them seem to do the job. So I began sketching and thinking of what I would want in a keyboard and how I would want it positioned.
Unfortunately, Talons was put on the back burner for a little while when I accepted a job offer in Florida which required relocating my family and settling into a new home.
A short time after arriving in Florida I met a good friend who I call a serial entrepreneur. He had developed a number products and new the patent process very well. With his help I began drafting a patent for Talons and also began the process of finding a team to help me build Talons.
The first step was to file for a Provisional Patent which would do two things. First, the patent would protect the idea during its development. Second, it would establish prior artwork and give legal precedence over any subsequent filings. The provisional patent is a simplified process the patent office created to allow inventors to record their patents. Below you can seen a copy of my original artwork.
The next step was to begin filing for a Non-Provisional patent which provides full protection under the U.S Patent Laws. This is a very long process that requires a lengthy technical and legal filing. We contracted a Patent Attorney to perform a patent search to make sure we would not be infringing on someone else's patent and then had them draft and file the patent for Talons. Due to the backlog at the patent office it takes around three years to receive the final patent. It's worth the wait because it comes with a nice red ribbon.
Once the patent search had been performed we were reasonably sure there was nothing out there like Talons in development. So, during the three year waiting period we began to design and build the first prototype. We contracted with an electronics manufacturing firm and over the course of the next year and half ironed out the final form, electronics requirements, software requirements and mechanical requirements for Talons.
The form design went through a number of iterations until we were comfortable that each part, circuit card and wiring would fit into just the right space and that the final form and functions provided the benefits we desired.
From the overall design the Hardware and Mechanical requirements were designed.
Schematics were created for each electronic part and integrated into a master schematic.
The Software requirements were diagramed and then the code was written to perform each individual function and to provide for the overall operation of the units.
Finally everything was integrated and mapped out in a 3D production design module.
Once all of schematics, blue prints, and CAD drawings were complete the fabrication of the prototype started and Talons began to emerge.
Finally in late 2010, Talons awoke and blinked its beady orange eyes...
To date we have completed the proof of concept phase and have constructed a fully functional prototype.
We have full production schematics and are ready to begin production.
The following table outlines the remaining steps required to bring Talons to market.
The remaining steps are to perform a beta test using soft molds and then setup a full production line using injection molds.
Beta tests are small production runs that are used as a final evaluation before full production begins. We have opened up the beta test to 10 donors at the Beta Tester level. The beta test will last approximately 5 months. Although there are a limited number of Beta Test Units, the Beta Test Website will be open to all donors regardless of donation level. We will look to open additional Beta Tester positions once our initial funding target is reached.
Production will begin approximately 10 months after funding. All necessary elements for production are in place with contracts ready to be signed. Our production partners meet ISO9001 Quality Assurance Standards. Also, Talons will be certified under CE/UL requirements to ensure the units meet the highest of quality standards.
Donors at the Producer Level and above should expect to receive their Talons 1.618 in approximately 12 months after funding.
Customer Service including shipping, handling, fulfillment, and technical support will be provided under a service contract with one of the top fulfillment companies already identified.

Risks and challenges
Is The PC dead?
- Definately not. Whether you are sitting down to a few hours of serious gaming or pulling an all-nighter at work, there is still no substitute for a computer with a great keyboard.
- There are many risks in taking new products into production. The key is to have business parnters that can help anticipate problems and find solutions quickly. We have mitigated these risks by fully developing a prototype that is production ready. Our production parnters have extensive experience setting up new production lines for electronics and technology products that meet ISO9001 Quality Assurance Standards.
