Why pay for packaging?

This may have been a gradual slope, the way we consume goods, but that doesn't mean it has to become our status quo. There is simply no reason to pay, approximately 13%, for the packaging of the items we use...especially when they go on to become a tremendous burden on our planet. There has to be a better way!

Bring your bags, bring your bottles, Mother Earth will thank you!

At Hello!Bulk everyone has the option of bringing in containers from home to refill. Simply TARE (get the weight of the container), FILL (we have everything from grocery to body care and household cleaners) and PAY (the "tare" is removed at checkout allowing the customer to only pay for what they put INTO the container).

How will we use the funds?

  • secure a lease for a retail location (with a real storefront)!
  • build out the space with bulk bins, shelves, point of sale system etc...
  • purchase our opening inventory
  • hire a team to support growth

The Hello!Bulk of today is what we call the "warehouse model". While it currently serves a retail purpose it has always been our plan to remove the retail element and transform the space into our warehouse. This plan supports our two part mission of 1) bringing a reuse/refill concept to the community and 2) supporting local food entrepreneurs by making organic and natural groceries accessible. In our warehouse space we hope direct our efforts into effective sourcing for both the Hello!Bulk retail location and our local cafes and food entrepreneurs. Salt Lake City is booming with new restaurants that want to bring organic, vegan and local food to their tables, but its an uphill battle... and we believe that we can help.

Well, the time has come to set those wheels in motion and in order to facilitate this we are launching our Kickstarter campaign. Please consider giving to the cause! We have begun looking for a "real" storefront and couldn't be more excited about this next step in our journey!

How did we get here? Jamaica's story...

Hello!Bulk Markets started as a “seed” in my mind as I worked quiet (ridiculously early) mornings in the bakery of Wild Oats Markets. At the time my store carried some, limited, bulk body care items. Customers would bring in their own containers and refill them with shampoo, conditioner or lotion... allowing them to pay for the contents, not the package. Although it was never the tidiest corner of the store, die-hard “anti-packaging” customers shopped it. I shopped it! When management did away with the little corner people complained, but nothing like it returned and every time I bought a new container of shampoo it stung. “Why?” I would ask, and continue to ask as I raised my three boys and worked in the grocery industry over the next decade.

While this idea has grown and developed for years, and this bulk market concept has many times almost come to fruition, I feel very lucky to be moving forward now. The awareness around what plastic is doing to our planet, and the growing movement toward REAL food are propelling the business in ways I couldn't have predicted. My "warehouse model" has proven useful on the many levels I knew it would...helped me to fine tune the store's identity, learn little things like which dispensers to use...but there was one key factor I had not predicted. It has helped me find my "village" and I now stand surrounded by a team of people invested in bringing about positive change. Hallelujah!

yours truly,  Jamaica

Why will this work in Salt Lake City? Because SLC ROCKS!

Salt Lake City has roots deeply embedded in sustainability and resourcefulness. Recently someone told me there were simply not enough "zero wasters" and vegans in this town to support a concept like mine, but what I believe she was overlooking is the vast population of Utahns that have a sort of pioneer spunk. Most of us, those born in this awesome state, grew up Mormon or were really close to a bunch of Mormons (these are just the facts). And whether it is something you subscribe to today or not, you remember things like your mom milling her own wheat, or as a kid taking time to work in a garden that the local ward cared for in order to feed the needy. I've even heard stories of women from my mothers generation brewing their own Kombucha. Now that's a pioneer! I believe the younger generations are embracing these elements of our unique Utah history. I see it in the customers that walk through my door and I take heart in this new "old" spirit.

Risks and challenges

Finding a retail spot in SLC right now is about as affordable as renting an apartment...its not. The growth here is tremendous which is good for business but bad for finding reasonable real estate. I have come to believe that finding the right location is going to be about community and conversation. I'm putting the word out and making the calls. Relationships are everything and I know something right will come along.

Team. I started this business with three things, my own hard work (and $), some funding from the SLC Economic Development Committee and my family's support. Couldn't have done it without them. But the time has come to delegate in a few areas and concentrate on my strengths...or things will not grow. I have hired my first official employee, Miwa, she's a keeper. A good hire goes a long way, but this plan of mine needs support, or burnout is a real risk.
