About this project
Funding has ended on Kickstarter, but you can visit 1lss.com to order MagBak and more!
Magbak is the world's thinnest mount for iPad. It's so thin, no one would ever guess it's a mount. It inherently mounts to most metal surfaces without adding any significant bulk or thickness. For non-metal surfaces, we have created MagStick. It's a beautiful minimalist mounting solution.
MagBak mounts your iPad to any metal surface.
For non-metal surfaces, there's MagStick.
Mount your iPad even with the SmartCover
The SmartCover snaps neatly in place to the back of your iPad.
MagBak's soft silicone pads feel great to the touch.
MagBak grips to the surface so that your iPad stays in place.
MagBak raises the iPad just enough to keep the back protected.
We include double sided 3M tape to adhere MagSticks to any surface.
MagBak with MagStick provides a great iPad car mount solution.
MagStick auto-aligns and guides your iPad as soon as you bring it close.
We designed MagStick to be incredibly small and thin.
MagStick, beautiful on it's own and looks great on any surface.
The same MagStick works with MagBak Air and MagBak Mini.

This project would not be possible without YOU, who support people like us that love to build and create stuff. A huge thank you to all of you that have sent us your feedback (good and bad). We took a very close look at every comment, every email, every message, to ensure we made the new generation MagBak the best it can be.
Special thanks to Colin Havey for the amazing work on the video and Ranil Goonawardene from Halien Production House for the beautiful track that he composed.
MagBak for iPad 2,3, and 4 are available at our online store.
We've tested all variations of iPad Air and Mini. The magnets inside MagBak do not affect the functionality of the iPad. Compass, Wifi, Bluetooth, and 4G-LTE all work without any issues. This is because our magnets are located in the same vicinity as iPad's SmartCover magnets. iPad is already designed to work with magnets in these areas.

Our first Kickstarter campaign was a great success. We were able to reach our goal in less than 3 days! We thank you for all your help and support! We had a great experience and learned a lot from it.
Since the introduction of MagBak, many of you have been asking for a product for iPad Mini and iPad Air. There was a significant change to the shape of these iPads along with the hinge area of the new SmartCovers. This made us go back to the drawing board. We didn’t want to simply adapt the previous MagBak design to the new iPads. We wanted to rethink the product and make it an even better experience.
We faced a few challenges along the way. The shape and profile of iPad Mini and Air is significantly different than their predecessors.
This gave us only one third the space to work with. We sketched up a few ideas until we came up with a design that we liked. After several prototypes, we finally had a slim, elegant design that maintains a strong mounting force.
We also wanted to improve the usability of MagBak on non-metal surfaces. We wanted to come up with something that was minimalist and at the same time extremely useful and versatile. That's how we came up with MagStick, which re-imagines the mounting solution.
MagStick had to be very small as to consume the least amount of space wherever it is in place. It had to be strong as to securely hold your iPad. It had to be appealing to the eye so that it will look great even when no iPad is mounted. We believe we have accomplished all this.
We have been able to keep MagBak as minimalist and elegant as while keeping all of it’s other features. MagStick also opened many possible uses for MagBak. It’s small design and awesome strength allows you to use your iPad in ways never thought possible. We wonder how you will use iPad next!
Risks and challenges
We believe we are past the most challenging obstacles. After several iterations we've finalized the design and have lined up vendors. We have gotten prototype molds made. With these molds, we've made fully functional samples. Once funded, we will move from prototype to production molds.
We are currently putting the finishing touches on the packaging design and continue to test MagBak and MagStick to ensure we ship the best possible product.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Once the campaign is complete (April 16th 2014), we will ask for your color selection along with your shipping info.
We will have 5 color options. Light Grey, Black, Blue, + 2 more colors based on popular demand. We'll have a vote towards the end of the campaign.
You can have the SmartCover folded in a triangle and hanging on the bottom or fold it and put it behind the iPad so it's hidden. We'll post some photos of it, but the main point is that you don't have to take it off to mount.
It's not designed for the SmartCase, but with that said you can have MagBak on the iPad Air and still put the SmartCase over it, it's a tight fit, but it does still fit. The mounting will not work with when the SmartCase is coving up the MagBak.
Some people have asked about putting MagBak on the actual SmartCase instead of the iPad Air. This will probably work, but we have not tested it, so we can't recommend it.
The pads are silicone base rubber pads with magnets built into them. There is layer of PET that protects the magnets from touching the back of the iPad (So no fear of magnets scratching your iPad)
The final layer has a 3M adhesive that is designed for metal.
Yes, you can remove it, and taking a cloth with rubbing alcohol will clean off any residue.
Once you do remove it, it will most likely stretch out the MagBak pads, and will not be reusable.
The older generation MagBaks do not use the same magnetic pattern. This is because of the SmartCover design of the older iPads. We will have a different MagStick for the older iPads releasing at the end of the campaign.
Every car is different, but we've tested in several cars, what is required is place to mount the MagStick. It comes with double sided tape, and foam tape can be used to mount to slightly curved surfaces.
