How many roads under the tires of El Grillo! With some hard work and imagination, we transformed our 33-foot bus into a moving home and photo studio. In three years we have travelled Mexico from north to south and back. In that time, we've visited and experienced many realities that symbolize for us the enormous diversity of the country.
After a long stay in amazing Tijuana, where our interactions were focused on the migrant communities, we headed south, and it was there that we began to encounter the astoundingly rich diversity of the country that is Mexico. We first met the Com Caac culture of the Sonora coast, a real nation with their own laws, costumes, traditions and language. Further south we found the Mayos and the Yaquis, where we were able to join them in their rituals in which they disguise themselves as deer or coyotes and imitate their movements. And our journey in El Grillo continued further southward, leading us to explore yet other cultural realities that, together, represent a real living oases in this globalized world.
We spent days and days waiting and developing rapport with the people, so as to enter into their confidence such that we then can show them our handmade Large Format Camera and take some pictures. Wonderful moments were born, in which everyone, from children to elders, studied this singular instrument, and where they even followed us into the dark room and enjoyed watching themselves upside down.
The people who posed in front of the camera remained still for about twenty seconds. We asked them to focus on their people, their fight for dignity, and their future. At the end, the wet collodion plate was immediately ready, a silver print on glass, a unique "Ambrotype".
In three years we collected a lot of Ambrotypes, as well as digital photographic material and texts, including interviews, reports, and travel stories lived in the company of many other travellers who have lived El Grillo.
Since the beginning of the journey we had the idea to make a book, and finally it is here: El Grillobook!
Now we need your support to print it, the support of those who followed us during the journey, and those who have just met us and are interested in our stories, in what means to live in a bus and share everything with the beautiful Mexican people.
THE BOOK WILL BE AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH, SPANISH AND ITALIAN
Risks and challenges
After the crowdfunding we will print and send the book. Then we will go back to Mexico to make a last big trip, we gonna travel from Puerto Vallarta to Tijuana, where we will expose all the material. During the journey we will produce more documentation to create an artistic box in collaboration with local artists, people we will find on the road.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
